Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shall we isolate ourselves behind the walls of national self-sufficiency and do without what we cannot produce? Or shall we try to break down trade barriers and restore export markets? Book The U S Farmer and World Market Development

Download or read book The U S Farmer and World Market Development written by Arthur B. Mackie and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Extract: The rapid expansion of U.S. agricultural exports over the past two decades has greatly enhanced the role of exports in the U.S. agricultural economy and has increased the stake of U.S. farmers in foreign economic growth and trade, and the development of foreign markets. The growth of U.S. agricultural exports has been closely related to income growth in foreign countries. This study examines the changing nature of world import demand for agricultural products, induced by economic growth and increased incomes, and its impact on and significance for (1) U.S. agriculture, (2) changes in the commodity composition of U.S. agricultural exports, (3) market shares of U.S. agricultural exports, (4) future market potential for U.S. farm products, and (5) income and export opportunities for American farmers with continued growth in world demand and agricultural trade.

Book Global Agriculture and the American Farmer

Download or read book Global Agriculture and the American Farmer written by Kimberly Ann Elliott and published by Center for Global Development. This book was released on 2017 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The United States is one of the world's largest producers and exporters of a range of agricultural commodities, and the largest provider of foreign assistance, so U.S. policies have big effects on global food security and other global public goods linked to agriculture. On the positive side of the ledger, President Obama created the Feed the Future aid initiative to promote agricultural development in poorer countries as a tool to achieve the global goals of ending hunger and extreme poverty, which are mostly rural. But that generosity is undercut by U.S. support for farmers that distorts global markets and ignores negative spillovers for the rest of the world. In this book, Elliott focuses on three policy areas that are particularly damaging for developing countries: traditional agricultural subsidy and trade policies that support the incomes of American farmers at the expense of farmers elsewhere; the biofuels mandate, which in its current form increases market volatility while doing little if anything to mitigate climate change; and weak regulation of antibiotic use in livestock, which contributes to the global spread of drug-resistant super bugs. While noting that broad reforms are needed to fix these problems, Elliott also identifies practical steps that U.S. policymakers could take in the relatively short run to improve farm policies--for American taxpayers and consumers as well as for the poor and vulnerable in developing countries.

Book The American Farmer in the Eighteenth Century

Download or read book The American Farmer in the Eighteenth Century written by Richard L. Bushman and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2018-05-22 with total page 391 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An illuminating study of America’s agricultural society during the Colonial, Revolutionary, and Founding eras In the eighteenth century, three†‘quarters of Americans made their living from farms. This authoritative history explores the lives, cultures, and societies of America’s farmers from colonial times through the founding of the nation. Noted historian Richard Bushman explains how all farmers sought to provision themselves while still actively engaged in trade, making both subsistence and commerce vital to farm economies of all sizes. The book describes the tragic effects on the native population of farmers’ efforts to provide farms for their children and examines how climate created the divide between the free North and the slave South. Bushman also traces midcentury rural violence back to the century’s population explosion. An engaging work of historical scholarship, the book draws on a wealth of diaries, letters, and other writings—including the farm papers of Thomas Jefferson and George Washington—to open a window on the men, women, and children who worked the land in early America.
