Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Citizen's Manual What is the relation of the citizen of the United States to the governments under which he lives? This question, which is quite distinct from questions concerning his relations to his fellow citi zens, is continually recurring as the population of the country increases, the interests of the people become more complex, and the interference of government with the rights and privileges of the citizen becomes more general. And it is a problem which, from its nature, is hardly capable of a satisfactory solution; for the conditions are in a state of perpetual change. N o sooner are present wants and needs provided for, than new questions arise, demanding attention. This matter of the relation of the governed to the government, is, then, pre-eminently and continually a question of the day. Book Hand Book for American Citizens Or Things Every Patriot Should Know Classic Reprint

Download or read book Hand Book for American Citizens Or Things Every Patriot Should Know Classic Reprint written by Henry Mann and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-12-12 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hand Book for American Citizens, or Things Every Patriot Should Know The object in issuing this manual is to place in the hands of the citizen a weapon which will arm him for the performance of his duties and the de fence of his rights. The information herein con tained has been carefully compiled from trust worthy sources. It is not specially intended for the theorist; it deals with the Republic as it has been and as it is, and with the Constitution and laws as they are, and not as this or that dreamer thinks that they ought to be. If knowledge is power, then the citizen who reads and studies this book will have power-power to do his part intel ligently in upholding the institutions whose estab lishment has cost. So much, and on whose perma nence the happiness of mankind may depend. The Old Flag appears all the dearer and more glorious the more we study the history which it represents, and the rights and privileges won for us by the men who bore it through the storms of many a battle field. The American who fails to acquaint himself with the origin and character of American institu tions, and with his own rights and obligations as a citizen and a sovereign is lacking in loyalty to his country, to his home and to himself. Book The Rights and Duties of Citizens of the United States

Download or read book The Rights and Duties of Citizens of the United States written by Edward C. Mann and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-01 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Rights and Duties of Citizens, of the United States: A Manual of Citizenship The scholars in our public schools and colleges should be instructed as to the elements that go to make up a good and useful citizen of our country, and the obligations, civil, social, and political, due to others from them. They should be instructed to yield respect and obedience to the laws, and to hold on with unflinching firmness to the Constitution and the Union of States. They should be taught the love of liberty and order, to walk in the path of patriotism, of fidelity to our country, and of duty to God. This is necessary in order that when they become of adult age they may be prepared to exhibit wisdom in the cabinet; the purest patriotism; the highest integrity, public and private; morals without a stain; and religious feelings without intolerance and without extravagance. In this little manual of the rights and duties of citizenship I sing the love of country and the pride of country to the youth of both sexes of my country. I teach the need of beating back ones country's enemies, whether they reside in or out of the United States - a most true song, to which I hope the hearts of the youth of our country will burst responsive into fiery melody, followed by fiery strokes before long. Thus the constitution of Alabama recites that the sole and only legitimate end of government is to protect the citizen in the enjoyment of life, liberty, and property; and when the government assumes other functions it is usurpation and oppression (art. We are coming to see as never before the unity of all human relations. The business of government is not an isolated thing, nor is it a fixed and finished scheme. It is constantly changing and growing, like a live thing. It has a beginning in the family and home; it touches every neighborly relation; it is con cerned with the uses, the getting, spending, saving, and holding of money, and the rightful distribution of property. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Citizens in Training: A Manual of Christian Citizenship The millions of Christian Endeavorers in the world are in dead earnest - in live earnest, rather - on the great question of Christian citizenship. They are determined that saloon-keepers, the illiterate, the criminal, the corrupt and corrupting ward politician, shall no longer rule our fair cities or dominate our mighty nations. Scores of campaigns for the betterment of city life, through the reform of political abuses or the reform of individual men, have been carried on during the past few years by our ardent Endeavorers. And yet only a beginning has been made. The government of Americas cities is Americas shame. If our great municipalities are to be redeemed within a generation from the foul hands into which they have fallen, the work must be done by the present Christian Endeavor host and their friends. Who will pretend to say that conscience has anything to do with the politics of any of our great cities? About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Alden's Citizen's Manual: A Text-Book on Government, for Common Schools The publishers of the Science of Government in connoo tion with American Institutions, - a work designed for Co] leges and High Schools, - have received abundant assurances, from various parts of the country, that the general introduction of the study of the science of government into common schools would follow the appearance of a text-book adapted to the wants and circumstances of common school teachers. The author was thus led to consult a number of intelligent and experienced teachers. Having possessed himself -of their views, which met his full approbation, he prepared a work, and submitted it to an able and successful teacher, who care fully revised every part of it, and made many valuable sug gestions. The work was then wholly te-written, and is now given to the public with the hope that it will meet the appro bation of common school teachers, and aid them in doing a work which no other class of men can do that of preparing the masses for intelligently exercising their rights as citizens of the Republic. Book The Rights and Duties of American Citizenship Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Rights and Duties of American Citizenship Classic Reprint written by Westel Woodbury Willoughby and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Rights and Duties of American Citizenship The purpose of the present work is to present to American youths practical information as to the rights and duties which attach to American citizenship. In the effort to do this in the clearest and most logical form, the stereotyped method of giving a running commentary upon the Constitution has been discarded. Of all political forms, the federal type is the most complex; and it is, therefore, little short of absurd to attempt, as do so many text-books on Civics, to explain to students who are without previous training the constitutional relations of our elaborate system of national, state, and local governments, without first giving to them a knowledge of the nature of political authority, the purposes for which it exists, and the general governmental means through which such purposes are attained. In the present work it is believed that this error has been avoided. The student is first given that information which is essential to an understanding of citizenship and government in general, before he is called upon to study the description of our own complex government in particular. This book is therefore divided into two parts. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
