Book excerpt: The new third edition of Law and Society provides a balanced, multidisciplinary, and comprehensive overview of law as an essential social institution that both shapes and is shaped by society. Between this book’s covers, readers will find the theoretical and conceptual contributions of anthropologists, historians, law professors, political scientists, philosophers, psychologists, and sociologists. By synthesizing this wide range of perspectives, the book provides readers with a nuanced and in-depth context to think about, discuss, and analyze current trends, issues, and events. Through this book, readers will also grasp the many ways law affects the lives of individuals and, more generally, how law and society affect each other in matters such as dispute settlement, criminal law, social movements, inequality, and social control. The third edition is brought up to date with the helpful reorganization of chapters. Separate chapters exploring how we define law, the differences among the major families of law, and dispute processing make the textbook more readable and adaptable to specific course objectives. Thorough revisions across the chapters reflect the latest sociolegal perspectives and research and include many new references and contemporary examples to help students appreciate a wide range of law and society issues. This thoughtful and stimulating introduction to the field is ideal for advanced undergraduate courses in Law and Society and Introduction to Law.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Slavery Distinguished From the Slavery of English Theorists, and Justified by the Law of Nature The first article of the amended Constitution of the United States declares that Congress Shall make no law respecting the establishment of religion or prohibit ing the exercise thereof. This declaration is justly dear to the hearts of the American people. It secures to every citizen the enjoyment of liberty of conscience, or the sacred right to worship God according to the dictates of his own judgment, with none on earth to make him afraid. It puts the various denominations of relig ion. On an equal footing, protecting all but showing preference to none; and thus saves the people from a prolific source of jealousy and discord. The dictate of practical wisdom, it is at once the charter of religious lib crty and a preventive of religious dissension. Book The Problem of Slavery in Christian America

Download or read book The Problem of Slavery in Christian America written by Joel McDurmon and published by . This book was released on 2019-06-17 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today's Christians and conservatives are largely unaware of the extent of the suffering of blacks in American History, from slavery to Jim Crow to the 1960s and even to today. They are largely unaware how systematic it has been and what institutions were created specifically to maintain the injustices. Christians are largely unaware that their own clergy and churches were among the leading proponents of the systems, and have no idea of the convicting and sad theological justifications employed for turning a blind eye to injustice, or worse, actively perpetuating it. That such theologies are still widely taught today is not a good sign when so many social ills still surround a silent church. In general, Christians and conservatives are not nearly as informed as they may think when it comes to understanding black history in the United States and the black saga it contains. The Problem of Slavery in Christian America aims at providing otherwise well-intended Christians and conservatives a deeper understanding of that history, a starting point for discussion and, if necessary, repentance, and with a biblical response to the larger problem of racism, all while refusing to capitulate to non-Christian leftism.
