Book The Southern Baptist Pulpit Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Southern Baptist Pulpit Classic Reprint written by J. F. Love and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 510 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Southern Baptist Pulpit As it is the province of the butler to serve the viands and not entertain the guests, we will not intrude on the deader a long dissertation on even so fine a dish as we are, by the graciousness of the brethren, able to provide. The intellectual and spiritual repast to which all are invited will proclaim its own excellence. The Southern Baptist Convention constitutes the largest deliberative body in the world, and though a few excellent volumes of sermons by single individuals have been published, no book representing the pulpit of the Convention has yet appeared. It was thought that such a volume would be a fitting memorial to our fiftieth anniversary as a separate organization. The book is truly representative though by no means exhaustive of the pulpit talent among us; and we believe its household value will be greatly increased by the portraits and biographical sketches of the contributors. All will welcome among the preachers, the face and sketch of the preachers friend. Judge Haralson, the president of the Convention. I wish here to record my profound thanks to my brethren, who, while averse to publicity, have, in the interests of the enterprise and through personal kindness, furnished the material for the book and made my cherished plan possible. Book The Rhode Island Freewill Baptist Pulpit Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Rhode Island Freewill Baptist Pulpit Classic Reprint written by Alvin Dighton Williams and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-17 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Rhode Island Freewill Baptist Pulpit And hence the present volume. None can be more fully or more sensitively aware that it has many defects than the writer. But elaboration and literary finish have not been attempted. Many of those-especially of our older ministers - whose biographies have been sketched, were plain and technically speaking unlettered men; and no effort has been made to make them appear to be, in this or in any other respect, what they were not. To embellish-their memories with the owers and graces of rhetoric, would only be to present them at a dis advantage - like a giant western pioneer trammeled with the finery of fashion. What they were would not be appreciated, and what they were not could not thus be attached to them if we would. As nearly as possible, therefore, they have been presented in the same light and garb in which they appeared to their unprejudiced contemporaries - just as they actually were. For in no other way would they be likely to be appreciated. The best of blacksmiths would be regarded as a most miserable ar tisan, if by any means he should be mistaken for a jeweller. Book Annals of the Presbyterian Pulpit

Download or read book Annals of the Presbyterian Pulpit written by William B. Sprague and published by . This book was released on 2005-12 with total page 664 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These volumes trace the Presbyterian Pulpit from the earliest days of the country until the early 1860's. This three volume hardcover set is very difficult to find and you can purchase all three volumes for less than you could purchase one volume from antiquarian booksellers. "Sprague's 'Annals of the American Pulpit' was one of the most useful reference works of the nineteenth century. By recording, often from personal acquaintances, key information about a wide range of clergymen in early American history, Sprague made it possible to peer much further into the day-by-day lives of the churches. This reprinting of the volumes dealing with Presbyterian ministers should be welcome to all students of early American history, but especially by those who desire a sense of how religious life 'on the ground' was carried out." Mark A. Noll, Professor of History, Wheaton College (IL)
