Book excerpt: Meet the world's most fascinating sea creatures—see the lives and curiosities of colorful fish and coral reefs—this spectacular volume has more than 300 color photos and extraordinary text from a leading marine biologist and underwater photographer, and the international expert on seahorses. In this richly informative volume, brimming with new discoveries and more than three hundred colorful images of jaw-dropping fish and coral reefs, you'll swim in the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Oceans; you'll be dazzled in the Coral Triangle and amazed in Triton Bay. Up close you'll meet the Cenderawasih fairy wrasse, with its florescent yellow streak; the polka-dot longnose filefish; and the multicolored seadragon. There are scarlet-colored corals, baby-blue sponges, daffodil crinoids, and all sorts of mystifying creatures that change color at the drop of a hat. The whale shark is almost larger than life and the author's beloved pygmy seahorse, unless photographed, is almost too tiny to see. The wondrous creatures inside are charmers and tricksters and excel in the arts of seduction and deception, and you'll have the rare chance to see and delight in their antics. You'll also learn what they eat, how they play, and how they care for one another, live on one another, and mimic others when they're afraid. There is also compelling insight into the naming process, which sea creatures are facing extinction, and how we can help them before it's too late.

Download or read book Silver Springs written by Bruce Mozert and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The key to Silver Springs's success was marketing, and park administrators knew well the power of publicity. This natural wonder was sold and marketed to tourists with tableaux of ordinary life taking place underwater. As the official photographer for nearly forty-five years, Bruce Mozert was a key player In promoting the park as a verdant wonderland where impossible things might happen underwater: a model cooks at a stove, wooden spoon at her mouth to taste, while condensed milk rises from a hidden can (to look like smoke); another bathes in a tub, scrubbing her toes; yet another relaxes on a chaise lounge while a nearby air conditioner hums away. These images are delightfully playful and clever, even touching in their depiction of the tastes and mores of an era of American optimism."--BOOK JACKET.
Download or read book Underwater Wild written by Craig Foster (Filmmaker) and published by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. This book was released on 2021 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Craig Foster and Ross Frylinck regularly dive together in the awe-inspiring kelp forests off South Africa, without wetsuits or oxygen tanks. Craig had dived this way for years, including alongside the octopus that inspired My Octopus Teacher. In Ross, he found a kindred spirit, someone who also embraced the ancient methods of acclimating his body to frigid waters, but whose eyes had not yet adjusted to the transcendent wonder Craig saw each time they dove. In the heart-wrenching stories that make up this unforgettable book, we swim alongside Ross as he grows from skeptic to student of the underwater wild. And in the revelatory marine science behind the stunning photos, we learn how to track sea hares, cuttlefish, and limpets, and we witness strange new behaviors never before documented in marine biology. We realize that a whole world of wonder, and an innate wildness within us all, emerge anew when we simply observe. "--publisher's website.

Download or read book The Weird and Wonderful World of Marine Worms written by Andrey Ryanskiy and published by Andrey Ryanskiy. This book was released on with total page 91 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is full of creatures that are weird and wonderful - marine worms! Some of them look like nightmares or aliens from outer space, others look like beautiful flowers. You have never seen most of them. Many are not yet known to science. The author and his friends - underwater photographers and marine biologists were lucky to find many fantastic beasts - a variety of marine worms. This required thousands of dives, especially night dives, and dozens of expeditions. The uniqueness of the book is also in the widest geographical range that it covers - from the Red Sea to Hawaii, including the world-famous centers of biological diversity, the Coral Triangle, the Great Barrier Reef, etc. Marine worms are recognized world champions in biodiversity. This book is the first photo guide to these secretive and often strange animals. The book is based on photographs taken by the author, as well as his friends - citizen scientists and professional marine biologists. It is designed for the general public, marine life lovers. The book is also of interest to scuba divers and underwater photographers interested in identifying their underwater finds. This photo guide should also assist marine biologists and students in the initial identification of collected marine worms. Many years ago, scientists included in "vermis" all animals that are longer than wide, without backbones. Many distinct groups of worms were described and recognized later. This book illustrates the most common groups of marine worms. It is they who are most likely to be met under water by marine life lovers, scuba divers, snorkelers. Segmented worms make up the Phylum Annelida. It is the most diverse group of marine worms. Therefore, it is not surprising that photos of annelids occupy a large part of this book. Within the annelids, the largest number of species are polychaetes. Polychaetes (meaning "many bristles") have many bristles on the body. In addition to polychaetes, segmented worms also include Peanut worms (Sipuncula) and Leeches (Clitellata) also featured in this book. Diversity of marine worms is not limited to annelids. The Ribbon worms (Phylum Nemertea) and Arrow worms (Phylum Chaetognatha) are also featured in this book. Together with Acoel worms and Acorn worms. These groups have significantly fewer species, but they are very important for our understanding of the evolution of marine life. Flatworms (order Polycladida) are featured in a separate book "Marine Flatworms of the Tropical Indo-Pacific." The book covers the region from the Red Sea, East and South Africa to Hawaii, Marshall Islands and Guam. Inside the book: • Over 820 full color photographs of 440+ species; • Particular attention was paid to color variations, for some species up to 10 photos were added; • Live photographs of most of the species have never before appeared in field guides or popular books; • Convenient pictorial guide at the beginning and genera index at the end of the book
