Download or read book Coasean Economics Law and Economics and the New Institutional Economics written by Steven G. Medema and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Upon hearing that Ronald Coase had been awarded the Nobel Prize, a fellow economist's first response was to ask with whom Coase had shared the Prize. Whether this response was idiosyncratic or not, I do not know; I expect not. Part of this type of reaction can no doubt be explained by the fact that Coase has often been characterized as an economist who wrote only two significant or influential papers: "The Nature of the Firm" (1937) and "The Problem of Social Cost" (1960). And by typical professional standards of "significant" and "influential" (i. e. , widely read and cited), this perception embodies a great deal of truth, even subsequent to Coase's receipt of the Prize. This is not to say that there have not been other important works - "The Marginal Cost Controversy" (1946) and "The Lighthouse in Economics" (1974) come immediately to mind here - only that in a random sample of, say, one hundred economists, one would likely find few who could list a Coase bibliography beyond the two classic pieces noted above, in spite of Coase's significant publication record. ' The purpose of this collection is to assess the development of, tensions within, and prospects for Coasean Economics - those aspects of economic analysis that have evolved out of Coase's path-breaking work. Two major strands of research can be identified here: law and economics and the New Institutional Economics.
Download or read book One Simple Idea written by Mitch Horowitz and published by Crown. This book was released on 2014-01-07 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the millions-strong audiences of Oprah and The Secret to the mass-media ministries of evangelical figures like Joel Osteen and T. D. Jakes, to the motivational bestsellers and New Age seminars to the twelve-step programs and support groups of the recovery movement and to the rise of positive psychology and stress-reduction therapies, this idea--to think positively--is metaphysics morphed into mass belief. This is the biography of that belief. No one has yet written a serious and broad-ranging treatment and history of the positive-thinking movement. Until now. For all its influence across popular culture, religion, politics, and medicine, this psycho-spiritual movement remains a maligned and misunderstood force in modern life. Its roots are unseen and its long-range impact is unacknowledged. It is often considered a cotton-candy theology for New Agers and self-help junkies. In response, One Simple Idea corrects several historical misconceptions about the positive-thinking movement and introduces us to a number of colorful and dramatic personalities, including Napoleon Hill and Norman Vincent Peale, whose books and influence have touched the lives of tens of millions across the world.

Download or read book The End of Composition Studies written by David W Smit and published by SIU Press. This book was released on 2007-03-29 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Setting forth an innovative new model for what it means to be a writing teacher in the era of writing across the curriculum, The End of Composition Studies urges a reconceptualization of graduate work in rhetoric and composition, systematically critiques the limitations of current pedagogical practices at the postsecondary level, and proposes a reorganization of all academic units. David W. Smit calls into question two major assumptions of the field: that writing is a universal ability and that college-level writing is foundational to advanced learning. Instead, Smit holds, writing involves a wide range of knowledge and skill that cannot be learned solely in writing classes but must be acquired by immersion in various discourse communities in and out of academic settings. The End of Composition Studies provides a compelling rhetoric and rationale for eliminating the field and reenvisioning the profession as truly interdisciplinary—a change that is necessary in order to fulfill the needs and demands of students, instructors, administrators, and our democratic society.

I absolutely loved all the action and drama this book had...I found myself many times holding my breath waiting for the other shoe to drop. I am so addicted to this series!” ~ Carol Allen, StarAngel’s Reviews “I couldn't finish this series fast enough!! The suspense was so killer. I read the first 3 books in 48 hours...it was that good. This is a must read.” ~ Kay Marle, Goodreads reviewer “I laughed, cried and sat in horror all while reading this...NOW THAT IS A GREAT BOOK! THE SERIES ROCKS! A MUST READ.” ~ Dystopian Doll, Amazon reviewer “I have no idea how Elle Casey does it. Every book is a masterpiece. There's never a slow or dull moment nor is there ever a dip in the plot. Usually in most books there's at least a boring passage or two but Mrs. Casey's books never have a dull moment. She can make a simple conversation between friends just as exciting and fun as a big fight scene. In fact some of my favorite moments in her books are just when her characters are interacting, making fun of each other or just eating lunch. The characters are so real and vivid that I find myself missing them once I've finished a series…” ~ Jamie, Blogger and Goodreads reviewer This series is dedicated to the amazing, wonderful Native Americans who populate our nation, continuing their traditions and reminding the rest of us that sometimes, progress isn’t always the best thing for our people.
