Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author of When Things Fall Apart reveals the meaning behind 59 Buddhist teachings and how you can use them as touchstones for daily living For centuries Tibetan Buddhists have relied on a collection of 59 pithy teachings—called lojong in Tibetan—to help them develop wisdom and compassion amid the challenges of daily living. In this book, Pema Chödrön introduces these transformative teachings and offers guidance on how to make them part of our everyday lives. Each lojong, or slogan, is followed by Pema Chödrön's accessible and succinct commentary on how to understand and apply it. The lojong teachings include: · "Always maintain only a joyful mind." · "Don't be swayed by external circumstances.” · "Don't be so predictable." · "Be grateful to everyone." Inside Always Maintain a Joyful Mind readers will also find a link to an online audio program entitled "Opening the Heart.” Here, Pema Chödrön offers in-depth instruction on tonglen meditation—a powerful practice that anyone can undertake to awaken compassion for oneself and others.

Download or read book Ledger written by Jane Hirshfield and published by Knopf. This book was released on 2021-09-07 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A pivotal book of personal, ecological, and political reckoning tuned toward issues of consequence to all who share this world's current and future fate—"Some of the most important poetry in the world today" (Naomi Shihab Nye, The New York Times Magazine). Ledger's pages hold the most important work yet by Jane Hirshfield, one of our most celebrated contemporary poets. From the already much-quoted opening lines of despair and defiance ("Let them not say: we did not see it. / We saw"), Hirshfield's poems inscribe a registry, both personal and communal, of our present-day predicaments. They call us to deepened dimensions of thought, feeling, and action. They summon our responsibility to sustain one another and the earth while pondering, acutely and tenderly, the crises of refugees, justice, and climate. They consider "the minimum mass for a whale, for a language, an ice cap," recognize the intimacies of connection, and meditate upon doubt and contentment, a library book with previously dog-eared corners, the hunger for surprise, and the debt we owe this world's continuing beauty. Hirshfield's signature alloy of fact and imagination, clarity and mystery, inquiry, observation, and embodied emotion has created a book of indispensable poems by a "modern master" (The Washington Post).

Download or read book The Tropical Rain Forest written by Marius Jacobs and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, tropical forests have received more attention and have been the subject of greater environmental concern than any other kind of vegetation. There is an increasing public awareness of the importance of these forests, not only as a diminishing source of countless products used by mankind, nor for their effects on soil stabilization and climate, but as unrivalled sources of what today we call biodiversity. Threats to the continued existence of the forests represent threats to tens of thousands of species of organisms, both plants and animals. It is all the more surprising, therefore, that there have been no major scientific accounts published in recent years since the classic handbook by Paul W. Richards, The Tropical Rain Forest in 1952. Some excellent popular accounts of tropical rain forests have been published including Paul Richard's The Life of the Jungle, and Catherine Caulfield's In the Rainforest and Jungles, edited by Edward Ayensu. There have been numerous, often conflicting, assessments of the rate of conversion of tropical forests to other uses and explanations of the underlying causes, and in 1978 UNESCO/UNEPI FAO published a massive report, The Tropical Rain Forest, which, although full of useful information, is highly selective and does not fully survey the enormous diversity of the forests.
