Book The Amazing Balancing Man

Download or read book The Amazing Balancing Man written by David Linden and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2014-09-30 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Amazing Balancing Man By David Linden This is the personal story of one person balancing pursuing his dreams and putting bread on the table. Born during the Great Depression to a barber and a homemaker in Albany, New York, David?s prospects were not very bright. However, his parents, who immigrated from Russia and Austria shortly after World War I, instilled in him the belief that you could do anything you wanted, as long as you did the work needed to prepare for it. He left high school before graduating to work and bring in a little extra income to help out the family. This was his first balancing act: finish high school or help the family. It wasn?t a lot of money, but it helped stretch the family budget a bit, and taught him valuable lessons about doing every job as well as he could and always trying to do better. David, it turns out, was an excellent salesman, regularly winning bonuses and recognition for tripling and quadrupling a department?s sales. Whenever he needed to put bread on the table or a roof over his head, David could always get a job as a salesman. He was very good at it, but was not particularly passionate about sales. As a teenager, David enjoyed participating in all sports and started developing a love of physical fitness, reveling in what he could get his body to do ? and enjoying the cheers of the crowd when he made a great play. It was while learning and practicing diving and some basic gymnastics at a local park with a pool that he started becoming aware of the strength and gratification he received from cheers and applause, especially from the attractive girls. When the Ringling Brothers, Barnum & Bailey Circus was came to town and he saw Ove Unus ?The Talk of the Universe? perform a one-finger handstand and heard the thunderous applause, David knew that was what he passionately wanted to do ? perform acrobatics for live audiences! He taught himself the art, building up the necessary physical and mental skills, watching others perform, and studying pictures of acts to figure out how to do them. Along the way he recruited others to join him, met and became friends with other performers, first in the Albany area and then at Muscle Beach, California, and around the Western Hemisphere. David performed with many circuses around the United States and Canada. In 1976 he joined the Harlem Globetrotters for a five month tour of the United States, Canada, and South America, performing his acrobatic and plate-spinning acts during half time. During one show in South America, he had a major fall which left him nearly paralyzed from his waist down. In only five weeks, he rehabilitated himself and rejoined the tour. He continued performing acrobatics ? and selling shoes and fitness equipment as needed to put bread on the table ? for another twenty years. In his seventies, he retired from acrobatics and tried retiring, but couldn?t stand the quiet, so he re-invented himself as a stand-up comedian. The mental and physical preparation for appearing before an audience and the applause for a performance well done are as essential to David?s well-being as having blood pump through his veins. Without the former, the latter is of little importance. Ultimately the story is about balancing one?s inner passions that define personal success against society?s measures of success.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How Serendipity Shaped the Lifeof Author Boyé Lafayette De MenteThis is the personal memoir of author Boyé Lafayette De Mente, the 4th of ten children born to poor parents in an isolated valley in the Ozark Hills of southeast Missouri, and raised during the Great Depression of the 1930s.He went on to have a remarkable life which he attributes to the incredible power of serendipity. As editor of The IMPORTER magazine in Tokyo in the late 1950s and early 1960s and as the author of numerous pioneer books on the mindset and business practices of the Chinese, Japanese and South Koreans he made major contributions to the initial rise of Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong and China as economic superpowers. He played a leading role in helping to launch the career of Thunderbird School of Global Management alumnae brother Merle Hinrichs who became the largest trade magazine publisher in Asia, a major financial donor to Thunderbird and member of the board of directors. And he launched the publishing career of Kentucky hillbilly Larry Flynt who achieved great wealth and notoriety as the publisher of HUSTLER magazine and champion of freedom of speech. [On the day De Mente met Flynt he told his wife that he had just met a 26-year old man who had the intelligence and drive to become president of the United States by the time he was old enough to qualify for the office.] De Mente's encounters and relationships with such extraordinary individuals as Admiral Chester W. Nimitz, America's ranking naval officer during World War II; Akio Morita, co-founder and leading light of what was to become the Sony empire; Toshio Karita, former protocol officer for the Imperial Family of Japan; and Daisetzu Suzuki, Japan's leading Zen master, plus many more, were experiences he could not have even dreamed about before they happened. His story is an example of the potential of ordinary individuals to achieve significant things when life presents opportunities and they follow up on them.

Book Sometimes Brilliant

  • Author : Larry Brilliant
  • Publisher : HarperCollins
  • Release : 2016-10-11

  • Pages : 316 pages

Download or read book Sometimes Brilliant written by Larry Brilliant and published by HarperCollins. This book was released on 2016-10-11 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When a powerful mystic steps on the hand of a radical young hippie doctor from Detroit, it changes lives and the world. Sometimes Brilliant is the adventures of a philosopher, mystic, hippie, doctor, groundbreaking tech innovator, and key player in the eradication of one of the worst pandemics in human history. His story, of what happens when love, compassion and determination meet the right circumstances to effect positive change, is the kind that keeps hope and the sense of possibility alive. After sitting at the feet of Martin Luther King at the University of Michigan in 1963, Larry Brilliant was swept up into the civil rights movement, marching and protesting across America and Europe. As a radical young doctor he followed the hippie trail from London over the Khyber Pass with his wife Girija, Wavy Gravy and the Hog Farm commune to India. There, he found himself in a Himalayan ashram wondering whether he had stumbled into a cult. Instead, one of India’s greatest spiritual teachers, Neem Karoli Baba, opened Larry’s heart and told him his destiny was to work for the World Health Organization to help eradicate killer smallpox. He would never have believed he would become a key player in eliminating a 10,000-year-old disease that killed more than half a billion people in the 20th century alone. Brilliant’s unlikely trajectory, chronicled in Sometimes Brilliant, has brought him into close proximity with political leaders, spiritual masters, cultural heroes, and titans of technology around the world—from the Grateful Dead to Mikhail Gorbachev, from Ram Dass, the Dalai Lama, Lama Govinda, and Karmapa to Steve Jobs and the founders of Google, Salesforce, Facebook, Microsoft and eBay and Presidents Carter, Clinton, Bush and Obama. Anchored by the engrossing account of the heroic efforts of the extraordinary people involved in smallpox eradication in India, this is a riveting and fascinating epidemiological adventure, an honest reckoning of an entire generation, and a deeply moving spiritual memoir. It is a testament to faith, love, service, and what it means to engage with life’s most important questions in pursuit of a better, more brilliant existence.
