This book was released on 2018-09-12 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: - This book includes all 10 illustrations by Howard Chandler Christi from the 1911 book printing by THE BOBBS-MERRILL COMPANY PUBLISHERS INDIANAPOLIS. Often called the American Agatha Christie, Mary Roberts Rinehart was a prolific author who wrote hundreds of books, short stories, poems, travelogues, plays, and special articles. While many of her books were best-sellers, critics were most appreciative of her murder mysteries. Many of her books and plays were adapted for movies. Contrasting with her well-known straight mysteries, Rinehart's Letitia "Tish" Carberry books are comedy mixed, not always, with mystery. Famous in her day, Tish inspired many book characters of elderly women who defy stereotype. "The Amazing Adventures of Letitia Carberry" is the first "Tish" book and contains one novella, by the same title as the book, and two long short stories, "Three Pirates of Penzance" and "That Awful Night."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mary Roberts Rinehart was born Mary Ella Roberts in Allegheny City, Pennsylvania, now a part of Pittsburgh. Her father was a frustrated inventor, and throughout her childhood, the family often had financial problems. Left-handed at a time when that was considered inappropriate, she was trained to use her right hand instead. She attended public schools and graduated at age 16, then enrolled at the Pittsburgh Training School for Nurses at Pittsburgh Homeopathic Hospital, where she graduated in 1896. She described the experience as "all the tragedy of the world under one roof." After graduation, she married Stanley Marshall Rinehart (1867-1932), a physician she had met there. They had three sons and one daughter: Stanley Jr., Frederick, Alan, and Elizabeth Glory. During the stock market crash of 1903, the couple lost their savings, spurring Rinehart's efforts at writing as a way to earn income. She was 27 that year, and produced 45 short stories. In 1907, she wrote The Circular Staircase, the novel that propelled her to national fame. According to her obituary in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette in 1958, the book sold 1.25 million copies.

GO out in the hall and see what has happened. Miss Lewis yawned again and groped around in the half-light for her slippers. It was more than Tish could stand. She hopped out Of bed in her bare feet and limped to the door. The hall was almost dark and across it the woman with the appendix - or without - was groaning. But half-way along, where the night nurse has her desk and keeps her papers and where the annunciator for the patients' bell is fastened to the wall, Tish saw a group Of five or six nurses, gathered about somebody in a chair. One Of them came running past with a glass Of something, and the crowd opened to admit the girl and the glass and closed again. Miss Lems came and looked over Tish's shoulder. Book excerpt: The charmingly batty old maid is off to the coronation to save the king in this “hugely entertaining” novel from the #1 New York Times–bestselling author (Kirkus Reviews, starred review). A naive observer might not immediately see a connection between the newspaper accounts of a man found naked on a church steeple, a constable attacked from the sky, and a grocer assaulted by “balloon bandits.” But these stories are tied together by a single word: Tish, the nutty maid who has never let old age get in the way of a good time. When her nephew announces a trip to England to write about the Coronation, Tish demands to come along. Fearing a diplomatic incident, her nephew refuses, but Tish resolves to find another way. It’s not long before she takes to the air—and the sky will never be the same. In these stories, Tish and her friends advise young lovers on bad haircuts, contend with fish in Florida and bears in the far west, and narrowly avoid confrontation with the waxworks at Madame Tussaud’s. With her unwavering, destructive enthusiasm, this sprightly old spinster gives new meaning to the phrase “young at heart.”
