Book The Amateur Army Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Amateur Army Classic Reprint written by Patrick MacGill and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-01 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Amateur Army I Am one of the million or more male residents of the United Kingdom, who a year ago had no special yearning towards military life, but who joined the army after war was declared. At Chelsea I found myself a unit of the 2nd London Irish Battalion, afterwards I was drilled into shape at the White City and training was concluded at St. Albans, where I was drafted into the 1 st Battalion. In my spare time I wrote several articles dealing with the life of the soldier from the stage of raw "rooky" to that of finished fighter. These I now publish in book form, and trust that they may interest men who have joined the colours or who intend to take up the profession of arms and become members of the great brotherhood of fighters. Book excerpt: The Amateur Army by Patrick MacGill CHAPTER I I Enlist and am Billeted What the psychological processes were that led to my enlisting in "Kitchener's Army" need not be inquired into. Few men could explain why they enlisted, and if they attempted they might only prove that they had done as a politician said the electorate does, the right thing from the wrong motive. There is a story told of an incident that occurred in Flanders, which shows clearly the view held in certain quarters. The Honourable Artillery Company were relieving some regulars in the trenches when the following dialogue ensued between a typical Tommy Atkins and an H.A.C. private: T.A.: "Oo are you?" H.A.C.: "We're the H.A.C." T.A.: "Gentlemen, ain't yer?" H.A.C.: "Oh well, in a way I suppose-" T.A.: "'Ow many are there of yer?" H.A.C.: "About eight hundred." T.A.: "An' they say yer volunteered!" H.A.C.: "Yes, we did." T.A.: (With conviction as he gathers together his kit). "Blimey, yer must be mad!" Book excerpt: Book Excerpt: and never less. But a few days ago, when weighing sugar and tea, a blast of wind upset the scales, and a second allowance met with a similar fate. Sugar and tea littered the pavement, and finally the woman supplied her soldiers from the household stores. She now leaves the work of distribution in the hands of the ration party, and takes what is given to her without grumbling. The soldiers' last meal is generally served out about five o'clock in the afternoon, sometimes earlier; and a stretch of fourteen hours intervenes between then and breakfast. About nine o'clock in the evening those who cannot afford to pay for extras feel their waist-belts slacken, and go supperless to bed. And tea is not a very substantial meal; the rations served out for the day have decreased in bulk, bread has wasted to microscopic proportions, and the cheese has diminished sadly in size. A regimental song, pent with soldierly woes, bitterly bemoans the drawbacks of Tommy's tea: "Bread and cheese for breakfast, For din Read More

This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Blown in by the Draft, Camp Yarns Collected at One of the Great, National Army Cantonments by an Amateur War Correspondent The majority of these camp sketches first appeared from day to day in the columns of the New York Sun. The chronicler is deeply grateful to the Sun for permission to gather them together between two covers and to turn them into a more or less permanent annal of a great National Army cantonment. In the title and now and again in the text the word "draft" appears. For a considerable period in formative months of the National Army this was assiduously avoided and "selective service" substituted. But now what sting there might once have been has disappeared and it stands an honoured word. To-day a draft recruit wears his "O. D." as proudly and soon will fight - or already is fighting - as gallantly as any other American soldier. Download or read book Boy s Book of the Army Classic Reprint written by Gen. Charles King and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Boy's Book of the Army For the most part these stories of brave deeds in army life show the kind of men who guarded our West in the days of hostile Indians. While these tales are usually fiction, yet the fiction is usually founded upon some incident of actual occurrence. The old frontier posts have now disappeared. They were centres of a life of adventure and often of a silent heroism, in which women and children as well as officers and men bore their full share. It was a lonely life, but full of picturesque incident and thrilling experiences, as these pages show. Many adventures of Uncle Sam's soldiers are told in the volumes of Harpers Strange Stories from History, which sketch events in our great wars. In the present volume it has seemed peculiarly worth while to afford a glimpse of the soldiers work in clearing the way for civilization upon this continent. This was a cantonment one had never seen before, and the grey-haired military police man could give no help. 'My experience, ' he spoke detachedly. 'is that you'll find everything everywhere Is it any particular corps you're looking for?' 'Not in the least, ' I said. 'Then you're all right. You can't miss getting something.' He pointed generally to the North Camp. 'It's like floods in a town, isn't it?' He had hit the just word. All known marks in the place were submerged by troops. Parade grounds to their utmost limits were crowded with them; rises and sky-lines were furred with them, and the length of the roads heaved and rippled like bicycle-chains with blocks of men on the move. Book excerpt: Excerpt from In Blue Uniform: An Army Novel In the time of which I write the Old Regi ment was furbishing up its battered accoutre ments after one campaign, and getting itself in handsome trim for another: This was an occupation that palled upon it after a little, for it smacked of the smug safety of civil life. Its forte lay in the field. It had a way of going forth with more cartridges and men than another regiment, and of coming back with fewer. That was why all the young men with a life apiece to throw away quickly, made haste to enlist with the Old Regiment. But now its chief end seemed to be to draw an oiled rag through a shiny gun-barrel - an occupation for old soldiers with a satiated taste for fighting. And garrison days were unconscionably long in coming to an end. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
