Book The Alumni Record of the University of Illinois Chicago Departments 1921

Download or read book The Alumni Record of the University of Illinois Chicago Departments 1921 written by Carl Stephens and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-01-23 with total page 570 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Alumni Record of the University of Illinois, Chicago Departments, 1921: Colleges of Medicine and Dentistry, School of Pharmacy Several years ago the University undertook the publication of a record of its alumni of the departments at urbana-champaign. Since the College of Medicine, the College of Dentistry, and the School of Pharmacy became integral parts of the University a few years ago, it seemed desirable to publish a similar record of the graduates of these divisions of the University. It seemed further advisable to include their graduates of the periods prior to the times of affiliation with the University of Illinois. We regard them all as alumni of the University. The reasons for publishing such a record are several. In the first place, it is a convenient presentation of the names, work, and addresses of the men and women who through the years have received their education at the University. Every one of these graduates is interested not only in the University but in other graduates and welcomes such a source of information about them. In the second place, such a book enables the officers of the University to keep informed as to the careers of its graduates and to keep in touch with them, both in their own interest and in the interest of the University. I take great pleasure, therefore, as this book is issued; in calling it to the attention of the Medical, Dental, and Pharmacal alumni and urging each of them to secure a copy. It will stimulate his interest in the University; it will recall old associations; it will inspire him to do something more for the cause of medical education. Book The University of Illinois 1894 1904

Download or read book The University of Illinois 1894 1904 written by Winton U. Solberg and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2000 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The distinguished historian Winton U. Solberg presents a detailed case study of one institution's transformation into a modern American university. The years 1894 to 1904 mark the stormy tenure of Andrew S. Draper as president of the University of Illinois. Draper, a successful superintendent of schools with no college or university experience and no credentials as a post-secondary administrator, presided over many crucial improvements in the university's physical plant, curricula, and other areas. However, he failed to infuse the university with a spirit of cohesion, and his term as president was fraught with conflict. From his inauguration on, the autocratic Draper collided with deans and faculty who opposed both the substance of his changes and the manner in which he presented and implemented them. This volume closely examines the Draper years from the perspectives of faculty, students, and administrators. Solberg outlines the administrative, faculty, staff, and physical infrastructure. He also reveals a vibrant and varied student life, including a whirl of social activities, literary societies, intercollegiate debate and athletics, hazing, religion, and increasingly prominent fraternities. A sharply delineated and detailed picture of a university in transition, The University of Illinois, 1894-1904 traces the school's shift from an institution known primarily as a training ground for engineers to a full-fledged university poised to compete on the national level.

Book A History of Conversion to Islam in the United States Volume 1

Download or read book A History of Conversion to Islam in the United States Volume 1 written by Patrick D. Bowen and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2015-08-17 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A History of Conversion to Islam in the United States, Volume 1: White American Muslims before 1975 is the first in-depth study of the thousands of white Americans who embraced Islam between 1800 and 1975. Drawing from little-known archives, interviews, and rare books and periodicals, Patrick D. Bowen unravels the complex social and religious factors that led to the emergence of a wide variety of American Muslim and Sufi conversion movements. While some of the more prominent Muslim and Sufi converts—including Alexander Webb, Maryam Jameelah, and Samuel Lewis—have received attention in previous studies, White American Muslims before 1975 is the first book to highlight previously unknown but important figures, including Thomas M. Johnson, Louis Glick, Nadirah Osman, and T.B. Irving.

Book Diverse Voices in Photographic Albums

Download or read book Diverse Voices in Photographic Albums written by Mary Trent and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-07-29 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through a variety of case studies by global scholars from diverse academic fields, this book explores photographic-album practices of historically marginalized figures from a range of time periods, geographic locations, and socio-cultural contexts. Their albums' stories span various racial, ethnic, gender and sexual identities; nationalities; religions; and dis/abilities. The vernacular albums featured in this volume present narratives that move beyond those reflected in our existing histories. Essays examine the visual, material, and aural strategies that album-makers have used to assert control over the presentation of their histories and identities, and to direct what those narratives have to say, a point of special relevance as these albums move out of private domestic space and into public archives, institutions, and digital formats. This book does not consider photographic albums and scrapbooks as separate genres, but as a continuum of modern creative practices of photographic and mass-print collage aimed at self-expression and narrative-building that co-evolved and were readily accessible. The book will be of interest to scholars working in art history, history of photography, visual culture, material culture, media studies, and cultural studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “An important contribution . . . invaluable to anyone interested in the history of pragmatism and the influence of biology and evolution on pragmatic thinkers.” —Richard J. Bernstein, The New School for Social Research, author of The Pragmatic Turn In Pragmatism’s Evolution, Trevor Pearce demonstrates that the philosophical tradition of pragmatism owes an enormous debt to specific biological debates in the late 1800s, especially those concerning the role of the environment in development and evolution. Many are familiar with John Dewey’s 1909 assertion that evolutionary ideas overturned two thousand years of philosophy—but what exactly happened in the fifty years prior to Dewey’s claim? What form did evolutionary ideas take? When and how were they received by American philosophers? Although the various thinkers associated with pragmatism—from Charles Sanders Peirce to Jane Addams and beyond—were towering figures in American intellectual life, few realize the full extent of their engagement with the life sciences. In his analysis, Pearce focuses on a series of debates in biology from 1860 to 1910—from the instincts of honeybees to the inheritance of acquired characteristics—in which the pragmatists were active participants. If we want to understand the pragmatists and their influence, Pearce argues, we need to understand the relationship between pragmatism and biology. “Pragmatism’s Evolution is about the role of evolution, as a theory, in American pragmatism, as well as the early evolution of pragmatism itself.” —Isis “Superb.” —Metascience “[An] important book.” —Acta Biotheoretica “A significant and edifying work.” —Choice “Pearce has done something remarkable and all too rare: written a book at the intersection of philosophy, science, and history that is equally excellent in all three respects.” —International Journal of Philosophical Studies

Book Eugenics Aristogenics Photography

Download or read book Eugenics Aristogenics Photography written by Kris Belden-Adams and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-06-08 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first study to explore the connections between late-19th-century university/college composite class portraits and the field of eugenics – which first took hold in the United States at Harvard University. Eugenics, "Aristogenics," Photography takes a closer look at how composite portraiture documented an idealized “reality” of the New England social-caste experience and explains how, when positioned in relation to the individual stories and portraits of members of the class, the portraits reveal points of non-conformity and rebellion with their own rhetoric.

Book The Correspondence of Charles Darwin Volume 30 1882

Download or read book The Correspondence of Charles Darwin Volume 30 1882 written by Charles Darwin and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2023-01-26 with total page 883 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is part of the definitive edition of letters written by and to Charles Darwin, the most celebrated naturalist of the nineteenth century. Notes and appendixes put these fascinating and wide-ranging letters in context, making the letters accessible to both scholars and general readers. Darwin depended on correspondence to collect data from all over the world, and to discuss his emerging ideas with scientific colleagues, many of whom he never met in person. The letters are published chronologically. Darwin died in April 1882, but was active in science almost up until the end, raising new research questions and responding to letters about his last book, on earthworms. The volume also contains a supplement of nearly 400 letters written between 1831 and 1880, many of which have never been published before.
