Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Alumnae News, Vol. 19: November, 1930 Many of his pictures have been lost because he experimented in animal and vegetable coloring, which was temporary and did not last. Many Of them were lost because they were painted on plas ter surfaces, the plaster being later chipped away. Even The Last Sup per was injured. Many Of the pictures were desecrated by enemies in various wars. He started three or four pictures which he did not finish, and those who engaged him to paint the pictures got Filipino Lippi to finish them. Another very wonderful picture, Leda, was set up at Fontainbleau in France, but it disappeared several hundred years ago. Leonardo da Vinci drew a great deal. And was the first great monochrome artist. He drew a picture of Isabella Gon zaga, which was on exhibit in Milan for two days. The whole place was crowded with men, women and children. To see this masterpiece. Today this mono chrome is considered the best example Of monochrome drawing in the world. Leonardo da Vinci executed many pen and ink drawings; also many maps which are extant today; and every drawing is perfect. The punctuation marks of the next half century are now all at hand. The Bah! Humbug! Mood is not far away as some Americans face the post-war status of women. They say in effect that of course dur ing war time women have their uses, but when the war is won women will of course settle back into more or less innocuous desuetude. Why w o r r y about their education? As for main taining it now how silly! \ve are at war and education is a useless luxury. It is my impression that the hum bug attitude is even more out of date now than it was in the 1870's. There is of course some precedent for taking pre-war parities as a standard of mod ern adjustment. But it is my sincere hope that we will not move to a pre Civil War basis in establishing post global war standards for education.
