But he also lampooned him because "He tells us when the sun will rise, Points out fair days, or clouded skies;--No matter if he sometimes lies." That the almanac-maker was not always responsible for the whole contents of his publication, is determined in Sherman's case by a very droll experience. He had prepared two almanacs for the year 1750, one for.Boston and another for New York. In his haste to get off the "copy" to Henry DeForeest, the printer of the latter, he was obliged to send it incomplete, but gave the printer latitude "to put in whatsoever else he should think proper." But the Dutch printer of New York had different standards of taste than the Puritan author of Connecticut. He inserted the following naive "Observations" on the months and quarters of the year, to which Sherman objected, as we shall see. "Observations On January. This Year begins as the last ended, and truely very well it may, for their two contiguous End, cling so fast together, one can't thrust a Knife between 'em. I find by the Stars that the greatest disease incident to this Month is Want of Money, caus 'd by the great Consumption of Wood, Candles, and Canary, three valluable Things this Cold Season: But besides the Coldness of the Season, we are like to have three other Sorts of Weather this Month; First, terrible nipping Weather, where the Maid gives the young Man a Denial: Secondly, suspicious Weather, where the Master kisses the Maid behind the Door: And thirdly, turbulent Weather, where the Mistress scolds and fights both Maid and Husband, making the House too hot for either. Observations For February. Now Valentine's Day approaches, which shall cause many to fall in Love, even as a Fly falls into an Honey pot; which may make some believe, that...

This book was released on 2013 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of leading figures of his day, Roger Sherman was a member of the five-man committee that drafted the Declaration of Independence and an influential delegate at the Constitutional Convention. As a Representative and Senator in the new republic, he had a hand in determining the proper scope of the national government's power as well as drafting the Bill of Rights. In Roger Sherman and the Creation of the American Republic, Mark David Hall explores Sherman's political theory and shows how it informed his many contributions to America's founding. A close examination of Sherman's religious beliefs provides insight into how those beliefs informed his political actions. Hall shows that Sherman, like many founders, was influenced by Calvinist political thought, a tradition that played a role in the founding generation's opposition to Great Britain, and led them to develop political institutions designed to prevent corruption, promote virtue, and protect rights. Contrary to oft-repeated assertions that the founders advocated a strictly secular policy, Hall argues persuasively that most founders believed Christianity should play an important role in the new American republic.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Nativity Stories from Matthew and Lukes gospels have endured through the centuries, but the way Christmas is celebrated has been dramatically reshaped. In the modern era the story of Christs birth has been overshadowed by fanciful tales of Santa, Frosty, and Rudolph. Holiday customs designed to enhance the enjoyment of Christmas have often come to obscure the message of the Saviors birth. The Christmas season now exists primarily to foster the urge to shop rather than a desire to pause and reflect on the good news of Christs coming. Today the Nativity Stories are seldom considered as a whole, and the theological riches of these sacred texts have regrettably been reduced to The Christmas Story. The biblical narratives that have inspired poets and artists for centuries warrant more careful study. Shivering Babe, Glorious Lord surveys the Nativity Stories through twenty centuries of Christian tradition: their composition by Matthew and Luke; their relationship to the larger biblical narrative; their profound influence on theology and worship; their modern decline and the reemergence of Christmas in a secular guise in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Readers yearning for a more Christ-centered Christmas will find helpful resources here.
