Book FDR s Gambit

  • Author : Laura Kalman
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2022-09-27
  • ISBN : 0197539297
  • Pages : 441 pages

Download or read book FDR s Gambit written by Laura Kalman and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2022-09-27 with total page 441 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive, engaging, and revisionist account of the Court fight that ties it to contemporary policy debates. In the last past few years, liberals concerned about the prospect of long-term conservative dominance of the federal courts have revived an idea that famously crashed and burned in the 1930s: court packing. Not surprisingly, today's court packing advocates have run into a wall of opposition, with most citing the 1930s episode as one FDR's greatest failures. In early 1937, Roosevelt-fresh off a landslide victory-stunned the country when he proposed a plan to expand the size of the court by up to six justices. Today, that scheme is generally seen as an act of hubris-an instance where FDR failed to read Congress and the public properly. In FDR's Gambit, the eminent legal historian Laura Kalman challenges the conventional wisdom by telling the story as it unfolded, without the distortions of hindsight. Indeed, while scholars have portrayed the Court Bill as the ill-fated brainchild of a hubristic President made overbold by victory, Kalman argues to the contrary that acumen, not arrogance, accounted for Roosevelt's actions. Far from erring tragically from the beginning, FDR came very close to getting additional justices, and the Court itself changed course. As Kalman shows, the episode suggests that proposing a change in the Court might give the justices reason to consider whether their present course is endangering the institution and its vital role in a liberal democracy. Based on extensive archival research, FDR's Gambit offers a novel perspective on the long-term effects of court packing's failure, as a legacy that remains with us today. Whether or not it is the right remedy for today's troubles, Kalman argues that court packing does not deserve to be recalled as one fated for failure in 1937.

Book 2012 and the Galactic Center

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A guide to the expansion of consciousness possible during the Galactic Alignment of 2012 • Reveals the new era that will be ushered in as the current perception of time collapses and spiritual perception expands • Explains the psycho-spiritual preparations necessary to transition into this new era • Shows how the alignment of the sun with the Galactic Center will allow humans to experience awareness normally reserved for shamans, pharaohs, and sages This is an extraordinary time in the planet’s history. In 2012, for the first time in almost 26,000 years, our sun will be most closely aligned to the Galactic Center. This Galactic Alignment, which began with the Harmonic Convergence in 1987 and will conclude in 2023, presents a thirty-six-year window of opportunity for humanity to participate in the creation of a new era of expanded consciousness. Christine Page explains that, as the source of all creation, our galaxy is the Great Mother and its center, her heart. Auspiciously aligning Earth with the heart of the Great Mother, the Galactic Alignment heralds a rebirth of the divine feminine qualities of the Triple Goddess--intuition, emotional creativity, and renewal. Drawing on alchemy and mythology, Page details how to connect with and use the sacred spiritual tools unlocked during the alignment to merge with the Great Mother, a spiritual transformation that allows us to expand our awareness and experience ourselves as eternal beings.

Book Asian Americans and the Media

Download or read book Asian Americans and the Media written by Kent A. Ono and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2019-12-18 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Asian Americans and the Media provides a concise, thoughtful, critical and cultural studies analysis of U.S. media representations of Asian Americans. The book also explores ways Asian Americans have resisted, responded to, and conceptualized the terrain of challenge and resistance to those representations, often through their own media productions. In this engaging and accessible book, Ono and Pham summarize key scholarship on Asian American media, as well as lay theoretical groundwork to help students, scholars and other interested readers understand historical and contemporary media representations of Asian Americans in traditional media, including print, film, music, radio, and television, as well as in newer media, primarily internet-situated. Since Asian Americans had little control over their representation in early U.S. media, historically dominant white society largely constructed Asian American media representations. In this context, the book draws attention to recurring patterns in media representation, as well as responses by Asian America. Today, Asian Americans are creating complex, sophisticated, and imaginative self-portraits within U.S. media, often equipped with powerful information and education about Asian Americans. Throughout, the book suggests media representations are best understood within historical, cultural, political, and social contexts, and envisions an even more active role in media for Asian Americans in the future. Asian Americans and the Media will be an ideal text for all students taking courses on Asian American Studies, Minorities and the Media and Race and Ethic Studies.

  • Publisher : SCB Distributors
  • Release : 2020-04-20
  • ISBN : 1912868164
  • Pages : 154 pages

Download or read book Waves written by Eduard von Keyserling and published by SCB Distributors. This book was released on 2020-04-20 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published on the eve of the First World War, Keyserling's masterpiece offers a vivid portrait of a society on the verge of dissolution. A group of German aristocrats gathers at a seaside village on the Baltic Sea for a summer holiday in the early years of the twentieth century. The characters represent a cross-section of the upper classes of imperial Germany: a philandering baron, his jealous wife, a gallant cavalry officer, the elderly widow of a general, a cynical government official, a lady’s companion. Their lives, even on holiday, are regulated by rigid protocol and archaic codes of honour. But their quiet, disciplined world is thrown into disarray by the unexpected presence of Doralice, a young countess who has rebelled against social constraints by escaping from an arranged marriage and running away with a bourgeois artist. Gary Miller's new translation will find a new generation of readers for this neglected German classic. “Keyserling...understands how to describe a summer afternoon so that as the bright sunshine turns to twilight one has the sensation of a whole lifetime.” Hermann Hesse “For him, art consisted of questioning, kindness, self-discipline, music and dreams. He was never a leader, but he will always be loved.” Thomas Mann

Book excerpt: Templar and Pagans is a fictional story based on true historical events that took place on Friday, October 13, 1307, when the greedy sovereign of France Phillip IV decided to expel the mastic Templar knighthood from his lands; and with the viscid support of the Catholic Church’s edict, the Anjou Emperor struck without provocation. But before the French ruler could carry out his malign plan, he had the Templar grandmaster Jacques de Molay arrested in Paris and when the machinate suzerain found out through sessions of torture that a small caravan of Templar paladins were secretively transporting a culminated relic from the ecru dessert sands of Acre in the Holy Land to the Templar Commandery at Templecoombe. So, the clever Frankish monarch descended from a line of ancient Merovingian Kings hastily dispatched two ruthless knight-errant companies of men under the command of a malevolent Cathar chevalier known as Viktor of Gaul to intercept and kill the misguided zealot Knights before they safely reached the rocky shores of England via passage by ship from the seaport of Brunges under the renowned leadership of Derek of Holstein, an exemplary cavalier who is emotionally torn between the sworn duties of his Zionist sect and his love for his beautiful ex-sister-en-law Countess Nicolette, who bitterly blames him for the death of her late husband Bruno of Holstein who perished during the siege of Acre which claimed his life. Now with every Templar knight being systematically apprehended on sight throughout the poverty-stricken kingdom at the hands of starving peasants and by vengeful knight-errant mercenaries hoping to cash in on the frantic craze their apparently seems to be no escape for them. And, with everything escalating out of control there are other secret knighthoods eagerly awaiting the inevitable outcome of Clements’s papal decree which could also spell doom for their fraternal organizations if successful. . . Thanks, Dennis...

Book Stan Without Ollie

Download or read book Stan Without Ollie written by Ted Okuda and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2012-07-31 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Long before his momentous teaming with Oliver Hardy, comedian Stan Laurel (1890-1965) was a motion picture star in his own right. From his film debut in Nuts in May (1917) through his final solo starring effort Should Tall Men Marry? (1928), Laurel headlined dozens of short comedies for a variety of producers and production companies, often playing characters far removed from the meek, dimwitted "Stanley" persona that we know and love. This is a film-by-film look at the pictures Stan made as a solo artist, as well as those he wrote and directed for other stars, shows his development as a movie comedian and filmmaker. Comedy legend Jerry Lewis, a longtime friend and admirer of Stan Laurel, provides an affectionate and eloquent foreword. Included are several rare photographs and production stills.

Book The Heart of the Great Mother

Download or read book The Heart of the Great Mother written by Christine R. Page and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2020-02-11 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reveals sacred spiritual tools to connect with the love, passion, and creative powers of the Great Mother for spiritual transformation • Explores the three faces of the Great Mother’s love and wisdom in our lives and how to build our magician’s wand, which enables us to be masters of our creativity • Details the journey of the soul through the twelve signs of the zodiac to integrate the shadow self and embody the soul’s true light • Explains how we are being called to birth a new world, one that embraces the divine feminine qualities of intuition, emotional creative power, and rhythmic renewal The year 2012 marked the birth of a new cycle of time that will last for the next 26,000 years. In charge of such birth is the Great Mother, the eternal source of all creation. She is calling on the feminine within us all to create a world worthy of the next seven generations and begin an era of peace, abundance, and spiritual evolution. To birth this new world, we must release our hold on old destructive patterns and instead embrace the divine feminine qualities of intuition, powerful creativity, and rhythmic renewal. As Christine Page reveals, the Great Mother hears our heart’s yearning to escape our old ways of suffering and struggle to find peace, fulfillment, and joy. She is reaching out to us across the dimensions, offering spiritual initiation and the chance to know ourselves fully right now. Dr. Page explains how important it is to acknowledge and integrate our shadow selves--the unloved parts of us--so we can radiate our light from the fullness of who we are without shame or judgment. Drawing on alchemy and mythology, the author details the journey of the soul through the twelve signs of the zodiac until our inner light shines. She also explores how to connect with and use sacred spiritual tools to open our hearts and merge with the Great Mother’s love and creative powers. Exploring the mythology of the Triple Goddess, the author explains how the three faces of the Great Mother help us on our spiritual journey of transformation: As virgin she inspires us to manifest our dreams. As mother, she teaches us to celebrate and nurture all living things, especially ourselves. As crone, she shows us that creativity changes like the seasons, encouraging us not to be possessed by our creations but to embrace mystery and impermanence. Finally, the Great Mother emboldens us to build our magician’s wand, the rod of light along the spine which enables us to be masters of our creativity, bringing forth transformation for ourselves and generations of children still to come as we embark into a new era of expanded consciousness and love.
