Book Holy Wars and Holy Alliance

Download or read book Holy Wars and Holy Alliance written by Manlio Graziano and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2017-04-11 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Religions are reemerging in the social, political, and economic spheres previously occupied and dominated by secular institutions and ideologies. In the wake of crises exposing the limits of secular modernity, religions have again become significant players in domestic and international politics. At the same time, the Catholic Church has sought a "holy alliance" among the world's faiths to recentralize devout influence, an important, albeit little-noticed, evolution in international relations. Holy Wars and Holy Alliance explores the nation-state's current crisis in order to better understand the religious resurgence's implications for geopolitics. Manlio Graziano looks at how the Catholic Church promotes dialogue and action linking world religions, and examines how it has used its material, financial, and institutional strength to gain power and increase its profile in present-day international politics. Challenging the idea that modernity is tied to progress and secularization, Graziano documents the "return" or the "revenge" of God in all facets of life. He shows that tolerance, pluralism, democracy, and science have not triumphed as once predicted. To fully grasp the destabilizing dynamics at work today, he argues, we must appreciate the nature of religious struggles and political holy wars now unfolding across the international stage.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Histories of the USSR during World War II generally portray the Kremlin's restoration of the Russian Orthodox Church as an attempt by an ideologically bankrupt regime to appeal to Russian nationalism in order to counter the mortal threat of Nazism. Here, Steven Merritt Miner argues that this version of events, while not wholly untrue, is incomplete. Using newly opened Soviet-era archives as well as neglected British and American sources, he examines the complex and profound role of religion, especially Russian Orthodoxy, in the policies of Stalin's government during World War II. Miner demonstrates that Stalin decided to restore the Church to prominence not primarily as a means to stoke the fires of Russian nationalism but as a tool for restoring Soviet power to areas that the Red Army recovered from German occupation. The Kremlin also harnessed the Church for propaganda campaigns aimed at convincing the Western Allies that the USSR, far from being a source of religious repression, was a bastion of religious freedom. In his conclusion, Miner explores how Stalin's religious policy helped shape the postwar history of the USSR.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Comparative Religion: Its Adjuncts and Allies These successive publications, though representing in themselves valuable and substantial results, were how ever only so many steps leading towards a goal which had been kept in view from the very outtet. At the same time, the experience gained in the preparation of these books steadily deepened a conviction that had very early asserted itself, viz. That Comparative Religion would never come to its own until its right to be pursued as a separate and self-governing discipline came to be generally conceded. Hitherto, this line of research has been regarded and expounded as a mere'adjunct of Theology, Philowphy, History, or some other depart ment of study; in future, it must be accorded a recognition commensurate with the rank to which it is demonstrably entitled. A plea to this general effect was advanced, and briefly supported, in a paper read by the author at the Third International Congress for the History of Religions, -held in Oxford seven years ago.' Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Comparative Religion: Its Adjuncts and Allies A literary project, outlined tentatively in 1905, is now to be carried into effect. The obstacles which for a time effectively barred its progress have at last happily been surmounted. Fifteen years have passed since the author resolved to make an honest attempt to provide a competent exposition of Comparative Religion. The study of this subject - its rise, its sources, its various transitions, its unutilized capabilities, its hazards, and its probable issues - had already engaged his attention for a somewhat lengthy period. During all that time he prosecuted divers inquiries with diligence and eagerness, for he had yielded to the lure of a quest which had thrown its fascination over him; but, unfortunately, he had to content himself with devoting to these studies only the scanty leisure which he was able to command. The increasingly-insistent needs of the situation, however, seemed to summon him to concentrate his energies upon investigations which promised to yield important results within the not very distant future. Besides, a great deal of the preliminary minutiae of research in this field had already been mastered. Accordingly, after due consideration, the fateful step was taken. Existing professional ties were severed. An earlier roving commission as a 'student at large' being resumed, the responsibilities of a long and exacting task were deliberately accepted. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pharmacists who refuse to fill prescriptions for contraceptives. Surgeons who pray in the OR. Pro-life clinics and end-of-life interventions, intelligent-design activists and stem-cell-research opponents. Is this the state of modern medicine in America? In Blind Faith, Dr. Richard P. Sloan examines the fragile balance and dangerous alliance between religion and medicine—two practices that have grown disconcertingly close during the twenty-first century. While Sloan does not dispute the fact that religion can bring a sense of comfort in times of difficulty, he nevertheless believes, and in fact proves, that there is no compelling evidence that faith provides an actual cure for any ailment. By exposing the flawed research, Sloan gives readers the tools to understand when good medical science is subverted and, at the same time, provides a thought-provoking examination into the origins and varieties of faith, and human nature itself.
