Book excerpt: Recounts the personal story of how two Naval academy roommates--US Marine Travis Manion and US Navy SEAL Brendan Looney--defined a generation's sacrifice after 9/11, and how their loved ones carry on in their memory Four weeks after Navy SEALs had killed Osama bin Laden, the President of the United States stood in Arlington National Cemetery. In his Memorial Day address, he extolled the courage and sacrifice of the two young men buried side by side in the graves before him: Travis Manion, a fallen US Marine, and Brendan Looney, a fallen US Navy SEAL. Although they were killed three years apart, one in Iraq and one in Afghanistan, these two best friends and former roommates were now buried together--"brothers forever." Award-winning journalist Tom Sileo and Travis's father, former Marine colonel Tom Manion, come together to tell thisd intimate story, from Travis's incredible heroism on the streets of Fallujah to Brendan's anguished Navy SEAL training in the wake of his friend's death and his own heroism in the mountains of Afghanistan. Book The Accidental Possibilities of the City

Download or read book The Accidental Possibilities of the City written by Katherine Smith and published by University of California Press. This book was released on 2021-03-02 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Claes Oldenburg’s commitment to familiar objects has shaped accounts of his career, but his associations with Pop art and postwar consumerism have overshadowed another crucial aspect of his work. In this revealing reassessment, Katherine Smith traces Oldenburg’s profound responses to shifting urban conditions, framing his enduring relationship with the city as a critical perspective and conceiving his art as urban theory. Smith argues that Oldenburg adapted lessons of context, gleaned from New York’s changing cityscape in the late 1950s, to large-scale objects and architectural plans. By examining disparate projects from New York to Los Angeles, she situates Oldenburg’s innovations in local geographies and national debates. In doing so, Smith illuminates patterns of urbanization through the important contributions of one of the leading artists in the United States.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of essays, which derive from a symposium held at the Art Institute of Chicago in 2005, tells the story of how medieval art was collected by both individuals and institutions in the American Midwest. This book will appeal to both medievalists and scholars of nineteenth- and twentieth century American history. In addition, it will also appeal to scholars who are interested in museum studies and the history of collecting. The essays in the first section, “Collecting and Displaying Medieval Art,” consider the formation of medieval art collections at influential cultural institutions in three of the most important centers of industry and culture in the Midwest: Chicago, Detroit and Cleveland. The second section, “Medieval Art as Inspiration and Education,” examines the motives of both private donors and museum professionals in forming collections and establishing period rooms and cloistered spaces at museums in Toledo, Kansas City, and St. Louis, among others. At the opposite end of the spectrum was a new trend in curatorial practice, beginning in the 1930s, that favored the dismantling of period rooms and espoused displaying historical works of art in more distinctly modern settings, a theme that pervades section three, “Medieval Art and Modernism.” An essay on medieval art in Midwestern university art museums and another one that considers the impact of works from medieval collections in special exhibitions serve as a remarkable coda to the rest of the volume. Two appendices follow this, one that provides an overview of medieval art collections in Midwestern university museums and another which provides a biographical sketch of prominent dealers of medieval art from 1900-1950.

Book excerpt: Song of the Ogeechee is based on a true story about two cousins who were like brothers born to families of affluent cotton planters in early 19th century Georgia who encountered set backs and ordeals caused by the Civil War followed by other hardships during the Reconstruction period. It continues after this period to tell how they overcame problems and responded to adverse conditions to be recognized for their efforts in a world that was busy with industrial progress and social change. The Allen cousins were born in Burke County near Midville not far from the Ogeechee River. Dr. Young John Allen spent his life in China and when he died was well known throughout China, Korea, Japan, and America for his achievements as a Methodist missionary in China from 1860 to 1907. Capt. John P. Allen spent his life in Dawson and Terrell County, Georgia, and when he died was well known throughout the South as a member of the Immortal Six Hundred and as a pioneer citizen and reputable jeweler in Dawson. The author attempts to tell this story for the first time to relate the amazing account of heritage and inherited talent in the Allen family through the symbol of a silver chalice passed on to descendants from 1857 and the magic of the Ogeechee River, the Indian name for River of Songs.
