Book excerpt: A spellbinding history of the hidden world below the Holy City—a saga of biblical treasures, intrepid explorers, and political upheaval “A sweeping tale of archaeological exploits and their cultural and political consequences told with a historian’s penchant for detail and a journalist’s flair for narration.” —Washington Post In 1863, a French senator arrived in Jerusalem hoping to unearth relics dating to biblical times. Digging deep underground, he discovered an ancient grave that, he claimed, belonged to an Old Testament queen. News of his find ricocheted around the world, evoking awe and envy alike, and inspiring others to explore Jerusalem’s storied past. In the century and a half since the Frenchman broke ground, Jerusalem has drawn a global cast of fortune seekers and missionaries, archaeologists and zealots, all of them eager to extract the biblical past from beneath the city’s streets and shrines. Their efforts have had profound effects, not only on our understanding of Jerusalem’s history, but on its hotly disputed present. The quest to retrieve ancient Jewish heritage has sparked bloody riots and thwarted international peace agreements. It has served as a cudgel, a way to stake a claim to the most contested city on the planet. Today, the earth below Jerusalem remains a battleground in the struggle to control the city above. Under Jerusalem takes readers into the tombs, tunnels, and trenches of the Holy City. It brings to life the indelible characters who have investigated this subterranean landscape. With clarity and verve, acclaimed journalist Andrew Lawler reveals how their pursuit has not only defined the conflict over modern Jerusalem, but could provide a map for two peoples and three faiths to peacefully coexist.

Book excerpt: Soon after the Emperor of German's journey to Constantinople and the Holy Land, nearly twenty years ago, the whole French nation was convulsed over an issue of Le Rire which purported to reveal the private travel notes of the Kaiser on what he termed his divine mission. ... In view of the demand of the itinerary only a single performance will be given in each locality. ... As France and Germany were at this time theoretically at peace, a mild attempt made by the French Government to suppress the issue; but every one secured a copy and the laugh was general at the kaiser's expense. ... In these times of stress, a little relaxation may not be amiss, and in that spirit, this translation of Le Rire is published.

Book Cities in a Time of Terror Space Territory and Local Resilience

Download or read book Cities in a Time of Terror Space Territory and Local Resilience written by H.V. Savitch and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-12-18 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about urban terror - its meaning, its ramifications, and its impact on city life. Written by a well-known expert in the field, "Cities in a Time of Terror" draws on data from more than a thousand cities across the globe and traces the evolution of urban terrorism between 1968 and 2006. It explains what kinds of cities have become prime targets, why terrorism has become increasingly lethal, and how its inspiration has changed from secular to religious. The author describes urban terrorism as an attempt to use the city's own strength against itself, forcing it to implode, and delineates three basic logics of terrorist choices for targeting cities. The book also includes a discussion of local resilience - the city's capacity to bounce back from attack - and suggests how that can be sustained. Examples from New York, London, Jerusalem, Istanbul, Moscow, Paris, and Madrid illustrate the book's central themes.

Book The Greatest Risk of All

Download or read book The Greatest Risk of All written by Stanley Cohen and published by Author House. This book was released on 2012-09-21 with total page 113 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: You will be exposed to an aging Jewish man, raised in New York who now finds himself living in Russellville, Arkansas and coping with gut wrenching decisions he feels compelled to make concerning his faith. He is not alone in this spiritual quest as he is now in the company of a Christian Arkansas coalminers daughter who is also open-minded to learn about Messianic Judaism and Yeshua (Jesus); the Messiah . The decision of converting from mainstream Judaism to Messianic Judaism was causing Scott a great amount of anguish. He felt that if he was wrong, it would be blasphemy. In the past he was quiet a risktaker, but, in this case he wouldnt be risking money, he would be risking his soul. Scott saw a vision of Jesus wearing a white robe with jet black hair falling over his shoulders. The light that surrounded Jesus was indescribably bright and its intensity was not earth like. When he tried to remember it, he could recall everything except the intensity of the brightness of the light. He could not duplicate the light.not even in his own imagination.
