Book Topological Galois Theory

Download or read book Topological Galois Theory written by Askold Khovanskii and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-10-10 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a detailed and largely self-contained description of various classical and new results on solvability and unsolvability of equations in explicit form. In particular, it offers a complete exposition of the relatively new area of topological Galois theory, initiated by the author. Applications of Galois theory to solvability of algebraic equations by radicals, basics of Picard–Vessiot theory, and Liouville's results on the class of functions representable by quadratures are also discussed. A unique feature of this book is that recent results are presented in the same elementary manner as classical Galois theory, which will make the book useful and interesting to readers with varied backgrounds in mathematics, from undergraduate students to researchers. In this English-language edition, extra material has been added (Appendices A–D), the last two of which were written jointly with Yura Burda.

Book Handbook of Exact Solutions to Mathematical Equations

Download or read book Handbook of Exact Solutions to Mathematical Equations written by Andrei D. Polyanin and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2024-08-26 with total page 660 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This reference book describes the exact solutions of the following types of mathematical equations: ● Algebraic and Transcendental Equations ● Ordinary Differential Equations ● Systems of Ordinary Differential Equations ● First-Order Partial Differential Equations ● Linear Equations and Problems of Mathematical Physics ● Nonlinear Equations of Mathematical Physics ● Systems of Partial Differential Equations ● Integral Equations ● Difference and Functional Equations ● Ordinary Functional Differential Equations ● Partial Functional Differential Equations The book delves into equations that find practical applications in a wide array of natural and engineering sciences, including the theory of heat and mass transfer, wave theory, hydrodynamics, gas dynamics, combustion theory, elasticity theory, general mechanics, theoretical physics, nonlinear optics, biology, chemical engineering sciences, ecology, and more. Most of these equations are of a reasonably general form and dependent on free parameters or arbitrary functions. The Handbook of Exact Solutions to Mathematical Equations generally has no analogs in world literature and contains a vast amount of new material. The exact solutions given in the book, being rigorous mathematical standards, can be used as test problems to assess the accuracy and verify the adequacy of various numerical and approximate analytical methods for solving mathematical equations, as well as to check and compare the effectiveness of exact analytical methods.

Book Abel s Proof

Download or read book Abel s Proof written by Peter Pesic and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2004-02-27 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The intellectual and human story of a mathematical proof that transformed our ideas about mathematics. In 1824 a young Norwegian named Niels Henrik Abel proved conclusively that algebraic equations of the fifth order are not solvable in radicals. In this book Peter Pesic shows what an important event this was in the history of thought. He also presents it as a remarkable human story. Abel was twenty-one when he self-published his proof, and he died five years later, poor and depressed, just before the proof started to receive wide acclaim. Abel's attempts to reach out to the mathematical elite of the day had been spurned, and he was unable to find a position that would allow him to work in peace and marry his fiancé. But Pesic's story begins long before Abel and continues to the present day, for Abel's proof changed how we think about mathematics and its relation to the "real" world. Starting with the Greeks, who invented the idea of mathematical proof, Pesic shows how mathematics found its sources in the real world (the shapes of things, the accounting needs of merchants) and then reached beyond those sources toward something more universal. The Pythagoreans' attempts to deal with irrational numbers foreshadowed the slow emergence of abstract mathematics. Pesic focuses on the contested development of algebra—which even Newton resisted—and the gradual acceptance of the usefulness and perhaps even beauty of abstractions that seem to invoke realities with dimensions outside human experience. Pesic tells this story as a history of ideas, with mathematical details incorporated in boxes. The book also includes a new annotated translation of Abel's original proof.

Book Galois Theory Of Algebraic Equations

Download or read book Galois Theory Of Algebraic Equations written by Jean-pierre Tignol and published by World Scientific Publishing Company. This book was released on 2001-04-02 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New Edition available hereGalois' Theory of Algebraic Equations gives a detailed account of the development of the theory of algebraic equations, from its origins in ancient times to its completion by Galois in the nineteenth century. The main emphasis is placed on equations of at least the third degree, i.e. on the developments during the period from the sixteenth to the nineteenth century. The appropriate parts of works by Cardano, Lagrange, Vandermonde, Gauss, Abel and Galois are reviewed and placed in their historical perspective, with the aim of conveying to the reader a sense of the way in which the theory of algebraic equations has evolved and has led to such basic mathematical notions as “group” and “field”. A brief discussion on the fundamental theorems of modern Galois theory is included. Complete proofs of the quoted results are provided, but the material has been organized in such a way that the most technical details can be skipped by readers who are interested primarily in a broad survey of the theory. This book will appeal to both undergraduate and graduate students in mathematics and the history of science, and also to teachers and mathematicians who wish to obtain a historical perspective of the field. The text has been designed to be self-contained, but some familiarity with basic mathematical structures and with some elementary notions of linear algebra is desirable for a good understanding of the technical discussions in the later chapters.
