Book Painting Poetry and the Invention of Tenderness in the Early Roman Empire

Download or read book Painting Poetry and the Invention of Tenderness in the Early Roman Empire written by Hérica Valladares and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2020-12-17 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tenderness is not a notion commonly associated with the Romans, whose mythical origin was attributed to brutal rape. Yet, as Hérica Valladares argues in this ground-breaking study, in the second half of the first century BCE Roman poets, artists, and their audience became increasingly interested in describing, depicting, and visualizing the more sentimental aspects of amatory experience. During this period, we see two important and simultaneous developments: Latin love elegy crystallizes as a poetic genre, while a new style in Roman wall painting emerges. Valladares' book is the first to correlate these two phenomena properly, showing that they are deeply intertwined. Rather than postulating a direct correspondence between images and texts, she offers a series of mutually reinforcing readings of painting and poetry that ultimately locate the invention of a new romantic ideal within early imperial debates about domesticity and the role of citizens in Roman society.

Book An Encyclopedia of the History of Classical Archaeology 2 Volumes

Download or read book An Encyclopedia of the History of Classical Archaeology 2 Volumes written by Nancy T. De Grummond and published by Greenwood. This book was released on 1996-11-25 with total page 690 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With 1,125 entries and 170 contributors, this is the first encyclopedia on the history of classical archaeology. It focuses on Greek and Roman material, but also covers the prehistoric and semi-historical cultures of the Bronze Age Aegean and the Etruscans and manifestations of Greek and Roman culture in other parts of Europe and the Mediterranean Sea. Unlike recent studies that focus on the science of excavating, this book also considers archaeological study in the Middle Age, the Renaissance, and the modern era. It includes entries on individuals whose activities influenced the knowledge of sites and monuments in their own time; articles on famous monuments and sites as seen, changed, and interpreted through time; and entries on major works of art excavated during the Renaissance and the 17th century as well as works that were known in the Middle Ages. All of the entries include some historical content. Most combine historical information with descriptive material that identifies and explains the topic, opinions of archaeologists past and present, and references to achievements in archaeological scholarship. As the definitive source on a comparatively new discipline--the history of archaeology--this volume will be useful to students and scholars in archaeology, classics, history, topography, art history, and architectural history.

Book Goethe s Visual World

Download or read book Goethe s Visual World written by Pamela Currie and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Goethe's ideas on colour and imagery crossed many borderlines: those of artistic processes and philosophical aesthetics, art history and colour theory, together with the science of perception. This investigation into his writings ranges across art from Antiquity, the Renaissance and the eighteenth century, as well as exploring the centrality of these issues to Goethe's literary work. Questions find answers, but also raise new questions. This systematic sequence of essays, originally written between 1999 and 2011, appeals to readers in all these separate areas, while drawing together their essential coherence.
