Book excerpt: It is obvious that Inger-Johanna is her father's favorite. He is an army captain, in charge at Gilje. When a fellow officer, Captain Rnnow, stops at the house, Captain Jger is delighted because the guest seems so charmed by Inger-Johanna. Mrs. Jger is a sister of the governor, and Captain Rnnow tells the Jgers that he will petition the governor's wife, with whom he is in favor, to take Inger-Johanna into their home for a year, so that she can learn the ways of society in the city. Gilje is a deserted mountain post and not at all suitable for a young lady of Inger-Johanna's obvious charms.Captain Jger wants his beloved daughter to visit her aunt, but when he learns the cost of the new clothing required, he storms at his poor wife and cannot be quieted. Perhaps his blustering is caused by sorrow at losing his favorite daughter, although he is happy that she will have such a fine opportunity.

Book excerpt: The Overland Limited, aglow with lights, stood in the Dearborn Street station in Chicago waiting for eight o'clock and the last of its fortunate passengers. Near the entrance gates, through which perspiring men and women were hurrying, stood the rear cars of the train. Within these could be seen joyous passengers locating themselves and arranging bags and parcels. In fifteen minutes the long journey of Ned Napier and his chum Alan Hope to the far southwest was to begin. At the other end of the big shed, where the cars of the long train seemed to fade almost out of sight, four persons were anxiously awaiting the approach of the hour of departure. One of these, the conductor of the train, consulted his watch, as he had done several times already, holding it close within the glow of his green-shaded lantern. "It's getting pretty close to time, Major Honeywell," he said with some concern. "You're sure he'll be here?"

Book Flying Adventurers

Download or read book Flying Adventurers written by David K. Vaughan and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2023-05-24 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aviation books were a unique and prolific subgenre of American juvenile literature from the early to mid-20th century, drawing upon the nation's intensifying interest. The first books of this type, Harry L. Sayler's series Airship Boys, appeared shortly after the Wright brothers' first successful flight in 1909. Following Charles Lindbergh's solo flight across the Atlantic, popular series like Ted Scott and Andy Lane established the "golden age" of juvenile aviation literature. This work examines the 375 juvenile aviation series titles published between 1909 and 1964. It weaves together several thematic threads, including the placement of aviation narratives within the context of major historical events, the technical accuracy in depictions of flying machines and the ways in which characters reflected the culture of their eras. Three appendices provide publication data for each series, a list of referenced aircraft and an annotated bibliography; there is a full index.
