Book The Air sea Battle Concept

Download or read book The Air sea Battle Concept written by Michael D. Mote and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 27 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Air-Sea Battle is an emerging operational concept borne of the growing complexity of Anti-Access and Area Denial challenges throughout the world, recognizing that denied access is not a new paradigm. Air-Sea Battle seeks to ensure strategic reach and cross-domain operational maneuverability for the joint force, in support of ends articulated by the National Command Authority. Air-Sea Battle's emergence coincides with the ostensible U.S. rebalancing to the Asia-Pacific region, potentially skewing the concept's relevance for employment in other regions of the world. While Air-Sea Battle represents one way to support national grand strategy, the effects of wedding this concept to strategic direction for our military are far-reaching, in terms of materiel and manpower, over the next two decades. This monograph explores Air-Sea Battle, focusing on its potential implications for the national grand strategy debate and the defense narrative, and recommends ways to inform and influence defense stakeholders and constituents. Air-Sea Battle's success or failure as an operational concept is tied to its feasibility, acceptability and suitability to ensure necessary access, for the advancement of U.S., allied and partner nation interests.

Book Military Airlift Forces Contributions to the Air sea Battle Concept for Combating Anti access area Denial Strategies

Download or read book Military Airlift Forces Contributions to the Air sea Battle Concept for Combating Anti access area Denial Strategies written by Robert L. Lowe (III) and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Air-Sea Battle Concept appears to be the prevailing response to adversarial strategies of anti-access, area-denial (A2/AD). That is, the denial of entry and the denial of maneuver within a particular theater of operation. The June 2012 issue of Armed Forces Journal stated that when adversaries can counter U.S. advantages with their own asymmetric capabilities, our best response lies in better integration and more flexible capabilities. The U.S. needs to explore ways to capitalize on, and improve, existing platforms in order to create effective responses to the pending threats posed by A2/AD. At the time of this writing, no published source on contemporary A2/AD counter-strategy has been found that includes capabilities of military airlift forces (MAF) beyond basic logistical support. If the goal of the Air-Sea Battle Concept is to make a major war less likely, and is not meant to be provocative, then military plans should include less threatening platforms into the overall concept. The MAF has proven it can provide positive results on the A2/AD problem and history lends a grateful hand to those U.S. Presidents, defense chairmen, and Air Force leaders who had the foresight to see its potential. A strong consideration of MAF contributions to this Air-Sea Battle Concept is overdue."--Abstract.

Book The Line Upon a Wind The Great War at Sea 1793 1815

Download or read book The Line Upon a Wind The Great War at Sea 1793 1815 written by Noel Mostert and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2008-07-17 with total page 800 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The thrilling story of Britain's death-struggle with Revolutionary France, wherein Napoleon is checkmated by Nelson's brilliant naval exploits. In February 1793 France declared war on Britain, and for the next twenty-two years the Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars raged. This was to be the longest, cruelest war ever fought at sea, comparable in scale only to the Second World War. New naval tactics were brought to bear, along with such unheard-of weapons as rockets, torpedoes, and submarines. The war on land saw the rise of the greatest soldier the world had ever known—Napoleon Bonaparte—whose vast ambition was thwarted by a genius he never met in person or in battle: Admiral Horatio Nelson. Noel Mostert's narrative ranges from the Mediterranean to the West Indies, Egypt to Scandinavia, showing how land versus sea was the key to the outcome of these wars. He provides details of ship construction, tactics, and life on board. Above all he shows us the extraordinary characters that were the raw material of Patrick O'Brian's and C. S. Forester's magnificent novels.

Book Air sea Battle

Download or read book Air sea Battle written by and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This reference is designed to provide an overview of the ASB Concept and what the Services are doing to operationalize or implement its tenets within their force development processes. At its core, the Air-Sea Battle (ASB) Concept is about reducing risk and maintaining U.S. freedom of action and reflects the Services' most recent efforts to improve U.S. capabilities. Similar to previous efforts, the Concept seeks to better integrate the Services in new and creative ways. It is a natural and deliberate evolution of U.S. power projection and a key support component of U.S. national security strategy for the 21st century. The ASB Concept describes integrated operations across all five domains (air, land, sea, space, and cyberspace) to create advantage. While ASB is not a strategy, it is an important component of DoD's strategic mission to project power and sustain operations in the global commons during peacetime or crisis.

Download or read book Command Of The Air written by General Giulio Douhet and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2014-08-15 with total page 620 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the pantheon of air power spokesmen, Giulio Douhet holds center stage. His writings, more often cited than perhaps actually read, appear as excerpts and aphorisms in the writings of numerous other air power spokesmen, advocates-and critics. Though a highly controversial figure, the very controversy that surrounds him offers to us a testimonial of the value and depth of his work, and the need for airmen today to become familiar with his thought. The progressive development of air power to the point where, today, it is more correct to refer to aerospace power has not outdated the notions of Douhet in the slightest In fact, in many ways, the kinds of technological capabilities that we enjoy as a global air power provider attest to the breadth of his vision. Douhet, together with Hugh “Boom” Trenchard of Great Britain and William “Billy” Mitchell of the United States, is justly recognized as one of the three great spokesmen of the early air power era. This reprint is offered in the spirit of continuing the dialogue that Douhet himself so perceptively began with the first edition of this book, published in 1921. Readers may well find much that they disagree with in this book, but also much that is of enduring value. The vital necessity of Douhet’s central vision-that command of the air is all important in modern warfare-has been proven throughout the history of wars in this century, from the fighting over the Somme to the air war over Kuwait and Iraq.

Book Asian Maritime Strategies

    Book Details:
  • Author : Bernard D Cole

Download or read book Asian Maritime Strategies written by Bernard D Cole and published by Naval Institute Press. This book was released on 2013-10-15 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is concerned with both the national security concerns of Asian maritime nations and the security of the Asian maritime commons. These are defined as the Pacific and Indian Oceans and associated seas, bays, and gulfs, with their included sea lines of communication (SLOCs). The most useful geographical designation for maritime Asia is the “Indo-Pacific.” Bernard Cole provides both a survey of the maritime strategies of the primary nations of the Indo-Pacific region and an evaluation of the domestic and international politics that drive those strategies. The United States, Canada, Russia, Japan, North Korea, South Korea, China, the Philippines, Brunei, Indonesia, Vietnam, Singapore, Malaysia, Myanmar, India, Pakistan, Iran, the smaller Indian Ocean and Persian Gulf states are all surveyed and analyzed. The United States, Japan, China, and India not surprisingly draw the most attention, given their large modern navies and distant strategic reach. The author concludes that the United States remains the dominant maritime power in this huge region, stretching from Canada to the Persian Gulf, despite its lack of a traditionally strong merchant marine. U.S. maritime power remains paramount, due primarily to its dominant navy. The Chinese naval modernization program deservedly receives a good deal of public attention, but Cole argues that on a day-to-day basis the Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force, as its navy is named, is the most powerful maritime force in Far Eastern waters, while the modernizing Indian Navy potentially dominates the Indian Ocean. In fact, a focus of this work is the exemplary description of all the region’s navies, with the author noting the naval arms race that is underway, particularly in the area of submarine acquisition. Cole is careful to couch this phenomenon in the regional concerns about Chinese naval expansion and the desire to ensure a continued, massive U.S. naval presence. The current naval developments in the region evince elements of a naval arms race, but lack the coherent maritime strategies to make naval developments dangerous to regional peace and security. Most telling will be whether United States power and focus remain on the region, while adjusting to continued Chinese maritime power in a way acceptable to both nations. No other current or recent work provides such a complete description of the Indo-Pacific region’s navies and maritime strategies, while analyzing the current and future impact of those forces.

Book Monsoon

Download or read book Monsoon written by Robert D. Kaplan and published by Random House Trade Paperbacks. This book was released on 2011-09-13 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On the world maps common in America, the Western Hemisphere lies front and center, while the Indian Ocean region all but disappears. This convention reveals the geopolitical focus of the now-departed twentieth century, but in the twenty-first century that focus will fundamentally change. In this pivotal examination of the countries known as “Monsoon Asia”—which include India, Pakistan, China, Indonesia, Burma, Oman, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and Tanzania—bestselling author Robert D. Kaplan shows how crucial this dynamic area has become to American power. It is here that the fight for democracy, energy independence, and religious freedom will be lost or won, and it is here that American foreign policy must concentrate if the United States is to remain relevant in an ever-changing world. From the Horn of Africa to the Indonesian archipelago and beyond, Kaplan exposes the effects of population growth, climate change, and extremist politics on this unstable region, demonstrating why Americans can no longer afford to ignore this important area of the world.

Book 7 Deadly Scenarios

Download or read book 7 Deadly Scenarios written by Andrew Krepinevich and published by Bantam. This book was released on 2009-01-27 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A global pandemic finds millions swarming across the U.S. border. Major American cities are leveled by black-market nukes. China’s growing civil unrest ignites a global showdown. Pakistan’s collapse leads to a hunt for its nuclear weapons. What if the worst that could happen actually happens? How will we respond? Are we prepared? These are the questions that Andrew F. Krepinevich asks—and answers—in this timely and often chilling book. As a military expert and consultant, Krepinevich must think the unthinkable based on the latest intelligence and geopolitical trends—and devise a response in the event our worst nightmares become reality. As riveting as a thriller, 7 Deadly Scenarios reveals the forces—both overt and covert—that are in play; the real ambitions of world powers, terrorist groups, and rogue states; and the actions and counteractions both our enemies and our allies can be expected to take—and what we must do to prepare before it’s too late.

Book Fleet Tactics and Coastal Combat

Download or read book Fleet Tactics and Coastal Combat written by Wayne Hughes and published by Naval Institute Press. This book was released on 2014-08-01 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This major revision updates Wayne Hughes's 1986 landmark study that is credited with providing decision makers a sound foundation for battle planning and tactical thinking. The book integrates the historical evolution of tactics, analysis, and fleet operations, and today it can serve as a primer for anyone who wants to learn how navies fight and win. This second edition includes much new material on combat in the missile age and reflects the reconfiguration of many tactics for littoral operations after the fall of the Soviet Union. Hughes recreates famous battles to show how tactics have changed through the ages and the ways in which they have remained unchanged. He covers tactical interaction between land and sea, the sensory revolution of WWII, secret weapons and maritime surprise, the role in battle of leadership and morale, and the importance of surface warships in today's U.S. fleet. He suggests that naval tactics, unlike ground combat, are dominated by the offense and concludes that the great tactical maxim must be attack effectively first. A new chapter traces the evolution of missile tactics at sea and includes details of attacks on ships. Many changes emphasize joint operations and coastal combat. The already extensive appraisal of command and control and information warfare is further expanded to cover modern naval operations and the character of modern salvo warfare. In the tradition of Mahan and Clauswitz, this classic text incorporates literature, politics, and a knowledge of human nature. Indispensable reading for all those interested in naval tactics, it is also a valuable reference for wargamers

Book Examining the inflection Point

Download or read book Examining the inflection Point written by Kieran T. Denehan and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 31 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "As it has done after previous periods of long conflicts, the military budget will contract, leaving military planners to do the same -- or more -- with less. This particular drawdown will be more challenging for the United States Air Force (USAF) than previous ones for two reasons. The first is that there were no major modernization efforts or fleet growth prior to this drawdown as in previous ones. In fact, most of the USAF's existing fleets have been constantly involved in combat, combat support, or humanitarian operations throughout the globe on the eve of the impending budget cuts. Second, these existing fleets will face new threats and challenges in the coming decades. Specifically, the USAF will have to determine how its fleets should be used to counter anti-access/area denial (A2/AD) strategies, how to integrate them into the emerging AirSea Battle Concept, and efficiently develop new technologies and programs to deal with future near-peer adversaries using A2/AD warfare. Much has, and much more can be, written about any one of these three subjects in extreme detail and in a range of security classifications. This paper's purpose is to provide a general and unclassified overview of these three significant developments to spur further interest in US defense policy in the Western Pacific and the USAF's role (and potential limitations) in it in the coming decades."--Abstract.

Book The Evolution of US Army Tactical Doctrine 1946 76

Download or read book The Evolution of US Army Tactical Doctrine 1946 76 written by Robert A. Doughty and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper focuses on the formulation of doctrine since World War II. In no comparable period in history have the dimensions of the battlefield been so altered by rapid technological changes. The need for the tactical doctrines of the Army to remain correspondingly abreast of these changes is thus more pressing than ever before. Future conflicts are not likely to develop in the leisurely fashions of the past where tactical doctrines could be refined on the battlefield itself. It is, therefore, imperative that we apprehend future problems with as much accuracy as possible. One means of doing so is to pay particular attention to the business of how the Army's doctrine has developed historically, with a view to improving methods of future development.
