Book Some Effects of Meteorological Processes on the Air Quality in Medford Oregon

Download or read book Some Effects of Meteorological Processes on the Air Quality in Medford Oregon written by Boris R. Pavelka and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Medford, Oregon, the major source of pollution is the lumber mill waste burner. Its low combustion efficiency results in the emission of large quantities of particulate into the atmosphere. Due to the influence of the atmospheric radiation inversion and possibly the poor performance of the burners at the time of start-up, concentrations of particulate were found to be highest in the morning. Correlating these morning concentrations with average surface relative humidity, average surface wind speed, and various stability indices, most of which were determined from the U.S. Weather Bureau's 0300 PST radiosonde release, provided a measure of the degree of relationship between these meteorological factors and pollution. In addition, the analysis resulted in a determination of what stability factors could readily be used to predict pollution concentrations with reasonable accuracy (correlation coefficients ≥ 0.65). These included the sounding energy to 850 mb (energy required to lift a parcel of air from surface to 850 mb), the temperature difference index (difference in temperature between 850 mb and surface), the Modified Showalter Stability Index (Showalter Index applied to the layer of air between surface and 850 mb), and the persistence index (the sum of three weighted Modified Showalter Index values for three consecutive mornings). Graphical and regression prediction models involving the persistence index and average surface wind speed were developed. These relationships proved to be more accurate in predicting morning concentrations of particulate (multiple correlation coefficients 0.84) than those involving only one meteorological variable (highest correlation coefficient = 0.74). In order to illustrate the effects of air pollution on visibility, a preliminary relationship between concentrations of suspended particulate and visibility was developed. If visibility were selected as the criterion for judging air quality as it might well be in a tourist-oriented economy, such a relationship could serve as the basis for forecasting conditions of unacceptably low visibility as a result of high concentrations.

Book Intercontinental Transport of Air Pollution

Download or read book Intercontinental Transport of Air Pollution written by Andreas Stohl and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2004-07-12 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transboundary transport of air pollution has been a topic of scientific research for several decades and has also been addressed already by environmental policies. However, the importance of air pollution transport on the largest - intercontinental - scales, has been recognized only recently. It was soon found that the meteorological and chemical processes involved in intercontinental pollution transport are distinctly different from those occurring during regional-scale transport, and thus new scientific methodologies are required for their study. In this book, leading scientists review the current state of knowledge in this emerging field of research, providing the reader with a process understanding of global-scale transport and its influence on the atmosphere's chemical composition. Long-range transport of anthropogenic pollution is contrasted with that of pollution produced by natural processes such as dust storms or forest fires. Furthermore, the prospects for international management of intercontinental transport of anthropogenic pollution are discussed.

Book Wildland Fires and Air Pollution

Download or read book Wildland Fires and Air Pollution written by Andrzej Bytnerowicz and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2009 with total page 688 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wildland fires are one of the most devastating and terrifying forces of nature. While their effects are mostly destructive they also help with regeneration of forests and other ecosystems. Low-intensity fires clear accumulating biomass reducing risk of catastrophic crown fires and can be used as an effective management tool. This book presents current understanding of wildland fires and air quality as well as their effects on human health, forests and other ecosystems. in the first section of the book the basics of wildland fires and resulting emissions are presented from the perspective of changing global climate, air quality impairment and effects on environmental and human health and security. in the second section, effects of wildland fires on air quality, visibility and human health in various regions of the Earth are discussed. The third section of the book deals with complex issues of the ecological impacts of fires and air pollution in forests and chaparral in North America. The fourth section discusses various management issues facing land and fire managers which are related to wildfires, use of prescribed fires, and air quality. This section also presents various modeling systems used for describing fire dangers and behavior as well as smoke and air pollution predictions applied in the risk assessment analysis. The book concludes with a series of expert recommendations for wildland fire and atmospheric research.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book was written by undergraduate students at The Ohio State University (OSU) who were enrolled in the class Introduction to Environmental Science. The chapters describe some of Earth's major environmental challenges and discuss ways that humans are using cutting-edge science and engineering to provide sustainable solutions to these problems. Topics are as diverse as the students, who represent virtually every department, school and college at OSU. The environmental issue that is described in each chapter is particularly important to the author, who hopes that their story will serve as inspiration to protect Earth for all life.
