Download or read book You Sir Are an Idiot written by Richard Larsen and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2005-04 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "You, Sir, Are an Idiot" compiles journalist Richard Edward Larsen's short columns on America's recent big events. Larsen's columns arise from the belief that reasonable debate must be restored to understand and to resolve the issues polarizing too much of public debate in the United States. No topic escapes Larsen's observations: On Iraq war justification: "No, this is not a failure of the intelligence agencies, it is a failure of this administration to use the intelligence intelligently." On war images: "We should never avert our eyes from the violence we visit upon ourselves in the name of hatred or politics or religion." On self-improvement: "I'm not sure when the tradition of new year's resolutions began, but I wouldn't be surprised if it started when a female Neanderthal looked at her mate one New Year's Eve and said, 'You need to quit slouching.'" On the future: "Peace is not merely a process, it is a commitment to the future of mankind." Larsen's columns urge us to question what we are told, to look beyond the superficial and to exercise always our basic right to look someone in the eye and say, "You, sir, are an idiot."

Book excerpt: A Los Angeles Times Bestseller "William Fulton is the Raymond Chandler of Los Angeles real estate."—Kevin Starr, California State Librarian and author of Material Dreams: Los Angeles through the 1920s A Los Angeles Times Bestseller"William Fulton is the Raymond Chandler of Los Angeles real estate."—Kevin Starr, California State Librarian and author of Material Dreams: Los Angeles through the 1920s In twelve engaging essays, William Fulton chronicles the history of urban planning in the Los Angeles metropolitan area, tracing the legacy of short-sighted political and financial gains that has resulted in a vast urban region on the brink of disaster. Looking at such diverse topics as shady real estate speculations, the construction of the Los Angeles subway, the battle over the future of South Central L.A. after the 1992 riots, and the emergence of Las Vegas as "the new Los Angeles," Fulton offers a fresh perspective on the city's epic sprawl. The only way to reverse the historical trends that have made Los Angeles increasingly unliveable, Fulton concludes, is to confront the prevailing "cocoon citizenship," the mind-set that prevents the city's inhabitants and leaders from recognizing Los Angeles's patchwork of communities as a single metropolis.

Download or read book Towards Sustainable Cities written by Peter J. Marcotullio and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-08 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While there has been much recent research into achieving sustainability in urban areas, most of this is specific to a particular region. This volume broadens these discussions by extending the analysis from North American and European cities to include East Asian cities. Many cities in Asia have deep historical roots, have sustained dense populations through time and have grown prosperous in recent decades. They also face significant environmental degradation and other planning challenges. In bringing together and comparing strategies and experiences from three distinct global regions, this book offers unique insights and new perspectives on the challenges of moving towards greater urban sustainability. While questioning which strategies can promote sustainable cities in a global context, the book also illustrates that while formulae generated out of American and European experience cannot be universally applied, some of the analytical approaches and experience of the other developed countries can offer insights for those working in different contexts. It argues that managing urban change for greater urban sustainability in diverse regions requires detailed understanding of local issues and regional strategies as well as strong support from local communities.
Download or read book Building Home written by Eric John Abrahamson and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2013-02-28 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Building Home is an innovative biography that weaves together three engrossing stories. It is one part corporate and industrial history, using the evolution of mortgage finance as a way to understand larger dynamics in the nation‘s political economy. It is another part urban history, since the extraordinary success of the savings and loan business in Los Angeles reflects much of the cultural and economic history of Southern California. Finally, it is a personal story, a biography of one of the nation‘s most successful entrepreneurs of the managed economy —Howard Fieldstad Ahmanson. Eric John Abrahamson deftly connects these three strands as he chronicles Ahmanson’s rise against the background of the postwar housing boom and the growth of L.A. during the same period. As a sun-tanned yachtsman and a cigar-smoking financier, the Omaha-born Ahmanson was both unique and representative of many of the business leaders of his era. He did not control a vast infrastructure like a railroad or an electrical utility. Nor did he build his wealth by pulling the financial levers that made possible these great corporate endeavors. Instead, he made a fortune by enabling the middle-class American dream. With his great wealth, he contributed substantially to the expansion of the cultural institutions in L.A. As we struggle to understand the current mortgage-led financial crisis, Ahmanson’s life offers powerful insights into an era when the widespread hope of homeownership was just beginning to take shape.
