Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Agriculture and Trade of the West Indies The West Indies is an important market for commodities, ranking tenth for exports and ninth for total trade in all Latin America in 1959. The overall economy of The west Indies is determined by the petroleum and as phalt industries of Trinidad, the bauxite industry of Jamaica and the rapidly expanding tourist industry. Nearly all the islands are mountainous, with less than half the total area considered suited for agriculture. The climate is tropical, but is modified by altitude and the trade winds. Book Depression in the West Indies

Download or read book Depression in the West Indies written by C. S. Salmon and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-05 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Depression in the West Indies: Free Trade the Only Remedy In met the preparation of almost any produce for the grat markets is daily becoming a process depending more and more on skill and machinery, and is a very difl'erent afi'air in deed from the growing of corn and digging of potatoes. The ideal notion we mostly have of how the black man lives is also equally far from the stern reality. Nature is great everywhere, and her greatness and potential riches are perhaps more abundantly observable under tropical suns than in temperate climates There is clearly more foliage if fewer flowers. Fruits and some natural productions, that man may eat but mnnot subsist on, may be occasionally more abundant and richer to the sigahtfbut it is Open to doubt whether they are, on the whole, more substantial than what may be picked up in our English woods. At any rate, the clearing away of ancient forests from the proximity of his abode, and the ownership of most of the good land by individuals, as well as the necessities of civilisation, have made it as impracticable for the negro of our West Indies to count on nature to help him in the way of food as for the modern Englishman to look to acorns and nuts as a supplementary diet. I have found it necessary to say this because of the false impression abroad, due to statements made by people who know better, but who seemingly cannot avoid saying again how easy it is to live in the tropics, simply because it hasbeen always said. Book Agricultural Production and Trade of Puerto Rico Classic Reprint

Download or read book Agricultural Production and Trade of Puerto Rico Classic Reprint written by John D. McAlpine and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-08-16 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Agricultural Production and Trade of Puerto Rico Puerto Rico is an island in the West Indies located between the Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea. It links the islands of the Greater Antilles, of which it is the smallest, to the west with the bridging islands of the Lesser Antilles stretching to the southeast to the continent of South America. Puerto Rico is slightly larger than Delaware and Rhode Island combined, with an area of square kilometers square miles). The main island, Vieques, and Culebra are inhabited, but the other smaller islands off the east coast of Puerto Rico are generally devoid of per manent inhabitants. These smaller islands account for less than 2 percent of Puerto Rico's total land area. Puerto Rico has few natural resources other than its location, agricultural and forestry potential, and tourist appeal. Both in the past and in recent years, the island's destiny has been shaped by its location near or at the crossroads of impor tant discovery and transportation routes. Agriculture has long played a key economic role, grudgingly giving way to industry. The island's wide expanses of beaches in a tropical setting have led to an increasingly important tourist industry. Book Prospects for Agriculture in the Caribbean Classic Reprint

Download or read book Prospects for Agriculture in the Caribbean Classic Reprint written by Robert Vaughn Enochian and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-09-19 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Prospects for Agriculture in the Caribbean Agricultural policies in the Caribbean are concerned with reducing food imports by increasing local production of food and with increasing production of export crops. It should be recognized at the outset that increasing local food production may not be the best way of increasing real income in the region. The possible alternative methods of providing a region with its food supply must ultimately include trade with other regions. If all factors are considered, it may turn out that various degrees of dependency on other regions for food imports in exchange for either agricultural or other goods and services may be to the best advantage of a given region. Furthermore, increasing agricultural production for export either through increased yields or expanded acreage may not necessarily be the best use of resources, even when there is idle land available with agricultural potential. Resources required to increase yields or bring new land into production may be able to earn a greater return in other uses. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Book of the West Indies Grenada, St. Lucia, and St. Thomas all possess hand books, short, concise, and handy in size, but Dominica and St. Vincent have not yet produced any of the kind. Of literature dealing with the West Indies generally there is enough and to spare. And the easy grace and fearless recklessness with which writers discourse upon West Indian matters has for many years been a living source of wonder to the West Indians themselves. Froude, Bulkley, Sewell, Walker, are but four out of many people who have written on the subject. The West Indian opinion of Froude is perhaps better left unprinted. But the indignation which he aroused in 1889 and 1890 is amusingly put by J. J. Thomas in a work entitled Froudacity, or West Indian Fables by James Anthony F roude, explained by J. J.
