Book excerpt: Prepared in cooperation with the South East Consortium for International Development, this is a substantial paper. It concentrates mainly on capitalist stock-farming and peasant agriculture appears only incidentally. Brief mention is also made of the fishing industry. The analysis, framed in terms of orthodox market economics, proceeds from a general geographical and political introduction to a survey of the present situation in agriculture. The data presented, although competently arranged, are limited by reliance on the small and often out-of-date range of published English-language literature. The report concludes with a brief assessment of constraints and priorities in post-independence agricultural development, concentrating on technical, institutional and environmental factors rather than political issues such as land tenure and income distribution. It advocates greater stock-farming output and the commercialization of crop production in the northern bantustans. (Eriksen/Moorsom 1989).

This approach entails the identification and prioritization of relevant and interrelated elements to help countries develop strategies and practical development plans that create synergies in line with their agricultural transformation plans. Given the unique characteristics of each country and the diverse needs of Africa due to the ecological heterogeneity and the wide range of farm sizes, the framework avoids being prescriptive.

Understanding how society changes entails understanding the geography of social change. In this new reader, the editors argue for a new way of looking at the relationship between society and its spatial organization, between society and nature, and between the interdependence and unique character of places. First, through a selection of material ranging from the changing geography of class cultures, gender relations, city structures, state power to the processes of international law, the readings demonstrate that neither space nor society can be understood independently of the other. Social change involves spatial change and spatial change affects social organization. The two sides of the relation mediate a geography of change. Second, a number of the articles explore the relation between society and nature, and demonstrate that that, too involves a continuous and changing interrelationship.
