Book Old Diary Leaves

Download or read book Old Diary Leaves written by Henry Steel Olcott and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-03-08 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Old Diary Leaves: The Only Authentic History of the Theosophical Society Organization may be in a position to refute the slander: which, even at this date, echo in some quarters round the name of Mme. Blavatsky. The building and formal installation of the Adyar Library, with ceremonies of an unprecedented character conducted by Indian pandits, Buddhist monks, Parsi mobeds, and a Muslim maulvi, are described, and numberless details of the growth of the theosophical movement, and of our Society in particular, are given. The story takes us to Europe as well as through Eastern lands, the intelligent reader being afl'orded the chance of watching the gradual outworking of the plan of the unseen Founders, whom their visible agents know to be at work through this channel in spreading throughout the world a knowledge of the principles which were taught by the Ancient Sages, and the general under standing and adoption of which would cure most of the evils which now afflict mankind. For men suffer because of ignorance of themselves and their environment, and the false ideals of happiness which they struggle for are begotten by their ignorance - by nothing else. The war of individual men, of classes, and of nations can never will never - cease until the ideal of the Perfect Man, the omnipotence of His perfected Will, and the irresistible force of the law of Karma are grasped by the public mind, and the present popular ignorance is dispelled. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Old Diary Leaves: The True Story of the Theosophical Society Yearly average since the foundation, in 187 5, by per cent. Statistically viewed, the relentless and unfair attack which the Society for Psychical Research and the Scottish Missionaries delivered against it in 1884, and which it was hoped would destroy it, merely resulted in very largely augmenting its prosperity and usefulness. The latest assault - that through the Westminster Gareth - must inevitably have the same ending. The simple reason is that, however thoroughly the private faults and shortcomings of its individual leaders may be exposed, the excellence of the Society's ideas is not im pugned in the least. To kill the Theosophical Society, it is first necessary to prove its declared objects hostile to the public welfare, the teachings of its spokesmen pernicious and demoralising. It being impossible to do either the one or the other, the world takes the Society as a great fact, a distinct individuality, which is neither to be condemned nor applauded because of the merit or demerit of its representative personalities. This truth begins to force itself upon outsiders. One of the ablest among contemporary journalists, Mr. W. T. Stead said in Borderland, in the course of a digest of these Old Diary Leaves as they originally appeared in the lor afflict, that nobody now cares whether the Coulomb and S. P. R. Charges of trickery against Madame Bla vatsky were true or false her worst enemies: being unable to deny her the credit of having affected modern philosophical thought to an extraordinary degree by popularising certain noble Eastern ideas. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anagarika Dharmapala is one of the most galvanizing figures in Sri Lanka’s recent turbulent history. He is widely regarded as the nationalist hero who saved the Sinhala people from cultural collapse and whose “protestant” reformation of Buddhism drove monks toward increased political involvement and ethnic confrontation. Yet as tied to Sri Lankan nationalism as Dharmapala is in popular memory, he spent the vast majority of his life abroad, engaging other concerns. In Rescued from the Nation, Steven Kemper reevaluates this important figure in the light of an unprecedented number of his writings, ones that paint a picture not of a nationalist zealot but of a spiritual seeker earnest in his pursuit of salvation. Drawing on huge stores of source materials—nearly one hundred diaries and notebooks—Kemper reconfigures Dharmapala as a world-renouncer first and a political activist second. Following Dharmapala on his travels between East Asia, South Asia, Europe, and the United States, he traces his lifelong project of creating a unified Buddhist world, recovering the place of the Buddha’s Enlightenment, and imitating the Buddha’s life course. The result is a needed corrective to Dharmapala’s embattled legacy, one that resituates Sri Lanka’s political awakening within the religious one that was Dharmapala’s life project.

Chatterji has rendered a valuable service in compiling, from the first five volumes of the Theosophist, this portly book of 557 pp. 8Vo, with a Glossary of Oriental terms, for the convenience of Western readers. The work has been done with judgment, and the selections cover a wide portion of the field of research with which our Society concerns itself."-Review, Theosophist, November, 1885 "This invaluable work contains many of the most important articles that have appeared during the last five years in the Theosophist. It is a perfect mine of wealth to the student of Occultism, and puts before him an immense body of esoteric teaching which is not contained in any other available volume."-Book Notice, Theosophist, November, 1885 Five Years of Theosophy has become a classic of theosophical literature since its initial publication in 1885. It contains articles from some of the deepest students of the early Theosophical Society, including H. P. Blavatsky, Mohini Chatterji, Damodar K. Mavalankar, T. Subba Row and others; and it covers several key subjects in ways and at depths that one will have difficulty finding elsewhere. It is thus an invaluable addition to the collection of any serious student of theosophy.
