Book Apollo in the Age of Aquarius

Download or read book Apollo in the Age of Aquarius written by Neil M. Maher and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2017-03-27 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the Eugene M. Emme Astronautical Literature Award A Bloomberg View Must-Read Book of the Year A Choice Outstanding Academic Title of the Year “A substance-rich, original on every page exploration of how the space program interacted with the environmental movement, and also with the peace and ‘Whole Earth’ movements of the 1960s.” —Tyler Cowen, Marginal Revolution The summer of 1969 saw astronauts land on the moon for the first time and hippie hordes descend on Woodstock. This lively and original account of the space race makes the case that the conjunction of these two era-defining events was not entirely coincidental. With its lavishly funded mandate to put a man on the moon, the Apollo mission promised to reinvigorate a country that had lost its way. But a new breed of activists denounced it as a colossal waste of resources needed to solve pressing problems at home. Neil Maher reveals that there were actually unexpected synergies between the space program and the budding environmental, feminist and civil rights movements as photos from space galvanized environmentalists, women challenged the astronauts’ boys club and NASA’s engineers helped tackle inner city housing problems. Against a backdrop of Saturn V moonshots and Neil Armstrong’s giant leap for mankind, Apollo in the Age of Aquarius brings the cultural politics of the space race back down to planet Earth. “As a child in the 1960s, I was aware of both NASA’s achievements and social unrest, but unaware of the clashes between those two historical currents. Maher [captures] the maelstrom of the 1960s and 1970s as it collided with NASA’s program for human spaceflight.” —George Zamka, Colonel USMC (Ret.) and former NASA astronaut “NASA and Woodstock may now seem polarized, but this illuminating, original chronicle...traces multiple crosscurrents between them.” —Nature

Book Manhood in the Age of Aquarius

Download or read book Manhood in the Age of Aquarius written by Tim Hodgdon and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Manhood in the Age of Aquarius investigates how a deep commitment to the belief in the naturalness of masculinity shaped the efforts of American hippies to create economic, social, political, institutional, religious, and environmental alternatives to their received culture during the 1960s and 1970s. Their efforts to create such alternatives informed the creation of a range of new forms of masculinity. Timothy Hodgdon compares two sharply contrasting hip communities: The Farm and the Diggers (later known as the Free Families). The Farmies argued that industrial progress had encouraged a dangerous hypermasculinity in men and a corresponding devaluation of women's fertility and capacity for maternal nurture. Only through veneration of women's beautiful yin could humankind return to the path of enlightenment charted by Buddha, Jesus, and other sages, and men were to cultivate a knightly masculinity of egoless service to women within lifelong, monogamous marriages. The anarchist Diggers reached the opposite conclusion: that progress had effeminized the organization man while brutalizing the respectable working-class men who served his interests as wage worker, policeman, and soldier. The Diggers sought to uproot the alienating status hierarchy mandated by private property. Their theater of the streets valorized the manliness of the outlaw& mdash;the Native American warrior, the Black Panther, the bohemian artist, and the Chinese tong member& mdash;who forcefully defended his freedom from the depredations of unjust authority while practicing the communistic sharing of wealth that, they believed, was a mark of honor among those slandered as thieves. Thus, Hodgdonargues, the Farmies and the Diggers occupied widely separated positions on a continuum of countercultural manhood. Their divergent criticisms demonstrate that the shift from producerist to consumerist conceptions of manliness was still by no means complete at mid century. Furthermore, hippies' unabashed commitment to masculinity as a natural trait, rather than a political and social construct, shows how even these incisive& mdash;and at times, impish& mdash;critics of American culture stood utterly unprepared for the emergence of radical feminism in 1967 and 1968.

Book The Aquarian Gospel of Jesus the Christ

Download or read book The Aquarian Gospel of Jesus the Christ written by Levi Dowling and published by Courier Corporation. This book was released on 2012-03-06 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This visionary text professes to tell the complete story of Jesus' life, including the "lost" years, during which he traveled and studied in Tibet, Egypt, India, Persia, and Greece. First published in 1908, this mystical work is the cornerstone of a Christian denomination, the Aquarian Christine Church Universal, and it offers intriguing, controversial assertions about Christ's message. Jesus was conceived by a human father, author Levi Dowling states, and by effort and prayer rendered himself a fit vessel for "the Christ" — the model for human existence and ultimate salvation. Dowling, who devoted forty years of preparation to the task of transcribing this volume's contents from original Akashic records, further asserts the reality of reincarnation and its culmination in the perfection of the human soul. Tracing Jesus' life from his birth in Bethlehem to his ascension from the Mount of Olives, Dowling offers complete details concerning the savior's years among monks, wise men, and seers throughout the Orient. Readers with an interest in occult lore and the history of religion will find this remarkable volume a source of endless fascination.

Book excerpt: How did a decade that dawned with the Age of Aquarius end in Altamont and the Manson Family bloodbath? The 1960s were a time of revolution - political, social psychedelic, sexual. But there was another revolution that many historians forget the rise of a powerful current that permeated pop culture and has been a central influence on it ever since. It was a magical revolution - a revival of the occult. Previously rejected and ridiculed beliefs took centre stage, reaching the Beatles and the Rolling Stones, saturating the the hippies and flower power, hitting the big screen with Rosemary's Baby and the bookshelves with Lord of the Rings. The Tarot. I Ching, astrology, Kabbala, yogis, witchcraft, UFOs, Aleister Crowley. Yin Yang and the Tibetan Book of the Dead now became the common currency they are today. But the vibes went bad, the auras darkened. Did that darker undercurrent win out? Gary Lachman here charts this explosion, its rise and fall, and its enduring legacy --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Book excerpt: The Dawning is a radically different and innovative approach to the astrological ages including the Age of Aquarius -providing a fascinating insight into past ages, our current turbulent times, and what might be in store for our world over the next few thousand years! Terry MacKinnell takes us on a journey into the astrological ages and with periscopic detail presents an entertaining and thought-provoking read that challenges astrological assumptions. MacKinnell proposes that an oversight made by the ancients inadvertently impacted conventional astrological calculations and he explores the popular belief that the Age of Aquarius has already arrived when according to conventional astrology it is not due for many centuries to come. He argues that the real Aquarian Age has indeed already arrived and did so in the 15th Century, the same century historians claim as the beginning of modernity. Continuing the journey he dives into our present and our future. This fascinating book will appeal to astrologers, archeo-astronomers, historians and everyone looking for a new perspective on the past, the present and the future.

Book The Dawning of the Golden Age of Aquarius Redefining the Concepts of God Man and the Universe

Download or read book The Dawning of the Golden Age of Aquarius Redefining the Concepts of God Man and the Universe written by Albert Amao Ph. D. and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2012 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We are at the threshold of a transitional period from the Age of Pisces to the Age of Aquarius. What should we expect from this coming New Era? What are its signs? What is the fate of human spirituality? What will the new concepts of God and of religion be? This book attempts to answer these questions based on well researched sources complemented and endorsed by cosmology, archeology, psychology, religion, Near East studies, and mythology, among other scientific disciplines. The book also intends to clarify the confusion created by some Protestant religious leaders and sensationalistic writers who have misinterpreted the signs of the transitional period as the end of the world. The truth is that we are witnessing a shift of ages, that is, the slow evolution from the Piscean Era to the commencing of a new worldwide social order, a new chapter in human history called the Aquarian dispensation. The huge conspiracy propounded by false prophets and some New Age writers, whether overtly or covertly, feeds the fear and anxiety of ordinary people with unfounded apocalyptic propaganda. This book attempts to give the reader an accurate perspective regarding the planetary transformations that are taking place; it offers hope and inspiration as we approach the Golden Age.
