Book The Legitimacy of the African Union Peacekeeping Mission in Sudan AMIS

Download or read book The Legitimacy of the African Union Peacekeeping Mission in Sudan AMIS written by Fabiola Mallach and published by . This book was released on 2016-08-22 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2015 im Fachbereich Politik - Internationale Politik - Region: Afrika, Rijksuniversiteit Groningen, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: This paper begins by providing background information about the African Union and the causes of the civil war in Sudan, which erupted in 2003. It will then go on to present the theoretical framework, namely Beetham's model of legitimacy. Thirdly, Beetham's model of legitimacy will be applied to the African Union Mission in Sudan (AMIS). Finally, a conclusion is drawn and the question whether the AMIS can be considered legitimate according to Beetham's model is answered. Peacekeeping is an important part of global politics. Furthermore, it can be called an essentially contested concept. Additionally, many people relate the word peacekeeping automatically with the Blue Helmets of the UN. However, the UN is not the only international organization which conducted peacekeeping missions. The African Union (AU) deployed peacekeeping missions in Sudan, Somalia and Burundi. A key norm in international law expresses that sovereign states should not intervene in national matters of other sovereign states. Nevertheless, there are omissions concerning this "non-intervention principle," which are laid down under Chapter VII of the UN Charter.

Book excerpt: A comprehensive history of the African Union Mission in Sudan (AMIS) from its inception in 2004 until replacement in 2007 by UNAMID. In response to the ongoing civil war in Darfur that began in 2003, the African Union deployed a peacekeeping force to the region in 2004. Initially just 150-strong, this force would grow to some 7,000 by the following year. Peacekeeping in Darfur: The AMIS provides a comprehensive history of AMIS I, II and III, the context to the conflict in Darfur and the various participants. It further describes the support provided by the European Union and the eventual transition of AMIS into UNAMID (African Union - United Nations Hybrid Operation in Darfur) in 2007. The author brings his personal experience of operations as part of AMIS and the role of the Hungarian Defence Forces to this book. Peacekeeping in Darfur: The AMIS is extensively illustrated by the author's own photographs taken while participating in the mission and includes specially commissioned artworks.

Book Intervention and Sovereignty in Africa

Download or read book Intervention and Sovereignty in Africa written by Irit Back and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2015-10-19 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In response to the civil war in Darfur, the African Mission in Sudan (AMIS) force was established in May 2004, and by June its first contingents were on the ground. For the first time since the founding of the African Union, a resolution about direct intervention in a conflict that involved wide-ranging abuse of human rights was accepted on a pan-continental level. Here, Irit Back looks at the changes in attitudes towards the ever-problematic tension between the concepts of humanitarian intervention and state sovereignty, using the example of the African Union's intervention in Darfur to illustrate this unique pan-continental approach to conflict resolution and peace-keeping. Additionally, Back analyses the challenges which international task forces, including AMIS and its successor the United Nations-African Union Mission in Darfur (UNAMID), have faced ever since. Including an examination of the situation in the wake of the declaration of independence of South Sudan in 2011, this book offers a unique perspective on the problem of internationally organised intervention in local conflicts.

Book Legitimacy Peace Operations and Global Regional Security

Download or read book Legitimacy Peace Operations and Global Regional Security written by Linnea Gelot and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-08-21 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the turn of the century the regional-global security partnership became a key element of peace and security policy-making. This book investigates the impact of the joint effort made by the African Union (AU) and the United Nations (UN) to keep the peace and protect civilians in Darfur. This book focuses on the collaboration that takes place in the field of conflict management between the global centre and the African regional level. It moves beyond the dominant framework on regional-global security partnerships, which mainly considers one-sided legal and political factors. Instead, new perspectives on the relationships are presented through the lens of international legitimacy. The book argues that the AU and the UN Security Council fight for legitimacy to ensure their positions of authority and to improve the chances of success of their activities. It demonstrates in regard to the case of Darfur why and how legitimacy matters for states, international organisations, and also for global actors and local populations. Legitimacy, Peace Operations and Global-Regional Security will be of interest to students and scholars of International Relations, African Security and Global Governance.

Book The African Union s Emerging Peace and Security Regime

Download or read book The African Union s Emerging Peace and Security Regime written by Kristiana Powell and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The notion of the "responsibility to protect" has made some progress in recent years, particularly in Africa. For example, the African Union's (AU) new peace and security agenda resonates with the prevention-reaction-rebuilding continuum outlined in the ICISS [International Commission on Intervention and State Sovereignty] report. This monograph draws on case studies of the AU and other international engagements in Burundi and Darfur, Sudan, to explore the opportunities and challenges operationalising the responsibility to protect in Africa.

Book Crafting an African Security Architecture

Download or read book Crafting an African Security Architecture written by Hany Besada and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-05-13 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The humanitarian crises caused by civil conflicts and wars in Africa are too great in scope for an adequate and effective continental response. The founding of the African Union and the drafting of the Responsibility to Protect doctrine, the basis for collective action against genocide, ethnic cleansing and crimes against humanity makes this a critical time to reflect on how best to address regional conflicts. This book responds to new regional conflicts over health, water, land and food security in the world's poorest, most socially fragmented continent. The work assesses African regional security arrangements and provides new policy recommendations for the future.
