This book was released on 2018-02-07 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The African Repository, and Colonial Journal, Vol. 21: January, 1845 We have the pleasure of laying before our readers, extracts from several letters received from the colony since our last number went to press. The information they contain, though not of a very recent date, will be found. Very acceptable, being much later than any thing before received. It will be matter of gratification to the friends of the emigrants sent out during the past year, to know that but very few of them have died, (as few or fewer than would probably have died, had they remained in this country, ) and they with other diseases than the African acclimating fever, and that the remainder are all doing well. This book was released on 2018-01-23 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The African Repository, and Colonial Journal, Vol. 12: August, 1836 C read the following extract Before I came from America, I behaved that the cause of Colonization was the cause of God, and since I have been here, I am but the more confirmed in that opinion. I believe that the same Spirit that moved upon the face of the waters, has moved upon the hearts Of the Colonization Society; and that they under God will be the instruments Of gathering the sons and daughters of Africa into one place - the land of their forefathers. I am very much pleased with this country. Would not leave it and go back to America to reside again for the whole United States. It is indeed a delightsome place; I never saw so beautiful a situation - the sea on one side and noble rivers On the other. It is very healthy too. Here is a vast field for benevolent enterprise. Oh for a heart, wisdom, and grace to go for ward and labor for the cause of Christ and his glory. Col. Lv. L. Stone said, he rose with more than ordinary pleasure to second the resolution which had been Offered by Mr. Pinney. He intended no speech, however. He would merely state that Mr. Teage was the editor Of the Liberia Herald: and there was something fitting that in the absence of one editor another editor should stand in his place. (laughter and applause.) While he assured the audience that the art of printing had not yet attained to very great perfection in Africa, he could at the same time point out as many as three hun dred papers, at least, now published in the United States, which evinced less intellect in the brains of the editors than the Liberia He rald. He trusted the friends Of Colonization would think that there was sufficient intellect under a colored skin to believe and to show, that Mr. Teage's paper merited the support of his friends in the U. States. (applause) About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The African Repository, and Colonial Journal, Vol. 21: Apil, 1845 Crossing the Pamunkey, a ride of several miles carried me to New Castle, a place mentioned by Chas tellux, in his travels. It has but one house and that in ruins; but near to it is the farm of Carter Braxton, Esq., at which we called for a few hours. Lts proprietor was from home; but just on leaving his house, we met him returning from Middlesex, and he handed me a gold piece which some friend to colonization had sent me from that county. My intention on leaving the hospitable abode of Carter Braxton, was to get within striking distance of Pole Green Church that night, as the next day was the Sabbath. \ve put up with an amiable family who were going to that church the next morning. The weather suddenly became warm and mild. Pole Green Church was formerly occupied by the Rev. Samuel Davies, whose reputation has given celebrity to the spot, and in making my appeal to the descend ants of his congregation, it occurred to me that my objectwas one of which he would have approved and enforced by his eloquence, had he been living. The collection amounted to twenty five or thirty dollars. And after ser vice I accompanied the Rev. Henry Smith to his parsonage. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The African Repository, and Colonial Journal, 1829, Vol. 4 Coomassie, the Capital of Ashantee, lies about one hundred and fifty miles m the interior, north of Cape Coast Castle. The expedition found the paths through the Fantee territory in many places excessively bad, but the slowness and difficulty of their progress was in some measure compensated by the povel and striking aspect of the country, and the occasional surpassing beauty of the region through which they passed. The second, day they entered a valley profusely covered with pines, aloes, and lilies; and richly varied with palm, banana, plantain, and guava trees; the view was refreshed by gentle risings, crowned with cotton trees of a stupendous size. 1 I never saw, says Mr. Bowdich, soil so rich, or vegetation so luxuriant. The following is the account given of one of the Fantee Crooms, (vil lages) situated about twenty miles from the coast.
