Download or read book Biodiversity of West African Forests written by Lourens Poorter and published by CABI. This book was released on 2004 with total page 527 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rain forests of West Africa have been designated as one of the world's hotspots of biodiversity. This book focuses on the biodiversity and ecology of these forests. It analyses the factors that give rise to biodiversity and the structure of tropical plant communities. It includes an atlas with ecological profiles of 280 rare plant species and 56 large timber species, each with a one page entry including a colour photograph and distribution map.

Download or read book Flowering Plants Eudicots written by Klaus Kubitzki and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-27 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents systematic treatments for the families and genera of the Malpighiales, which more recently have been recognised as a new major group of the eudicots. Apart from several herbaceous lineages (already treated in Vol. IX of this series), the order consists mainly of rainforest trees, particularly those of the understorey. Accompanied by other early eudicot lineages, this reflects the well-documented origin of the group as invaders into the conifer-, cycad- and seed fern-dominated forests of the Cretaceous which, at that time, were transformed into the tropical rainforest biome. In this volume, 24 families with 429 genera comprising over 12,000 species are treated. Many of these belong to the vast family of the Euphorbiaceae (here conceived in a broader sense), followed by the Violaceae, whereas some of the remaining families are very small and even relictual. The revised classification includes a complete inventory of the genera belonging to the families treated in this volume, along with their diagnostic features and keys for their identification. References to the latest taxonomic literature and links to many different disciplines important to modern plant systematics make the volume a valuable source of information on the manifold aspects of plant diversity.

Download or read book Forest Climbing Plants of West Africa written by Frans Bongers and published by CABI. This book was released on 2005 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Climbing plants, including lianas, represent a fascinating component of the ecology of tropical forests. This book focuses on the climbing plants of West African forests. Based on original research, it presents information on the flora (including a checklist), diversity (with overviews at several levels of integration), ecology (distribution, characteristics in relation to environment, their role in forest ecosystems) and ethnobotany. Forestry aspects, such as their impact on tree growth and development, and the effects of forestry interventions on climbers are also covered.

Download or read book Biomes of the Southern Hemisphere written by Ladislav Mucina and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-07-04 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first comprehensive and critical evaluation of the biome (large-scale, functional biotic communities) patterns in the Southern Hemisphere. Revising the Heinrich Walter's zonobiome system for the Southern Hemisphere appeared as necessary because of the bioclimatic imbalance between the Hemispheres. This revision resulted in formulation of a new zonobiome system, considering the geographic peculiarities of both Hemispheres, hence creating a new, powerful tool of global nature-resource survey and conservation. The system has a potential to attract the interest of the global climate modeling community as the concept of biome (and associated hierarchical system) has a strong functional focus. All zonal biomes of the Southern Hemisphere are featured, and the major challenges we face in understanding their origins, structure, and functioning are discussed. The book contains a wealth of original data resulting from collation of bioclimatic data and vegetation mapping.
