Book excerpt: Tanker markets are one of the many markets to experience extreme volatility, historically realizing drastic swings in earnings of up to 260% week over week. This volatility has placed pressure on tanker market participants to forecast future returns, create guidance for their investment decisions, and develop an analytical advantage. In this thesis, we develop analytics models to predict average earnings in the VLCC and Suezmax tanker market segments. Through the use of principal components regression, we forecast market returns with endogenous and exogenous market factors. A challenge lies in the fact that key variables--supply, demand, and utilization--are not necessarily available at the time of prediction. Accordingly, we develop an original two-step framework that first predicts vessel supply using classification models, and then embeds the imputed variables into the downstream principal components regression model. Methodologically, this procedure provides a novel approach to integrate classification outputs into a downstream predictive model. Based on our findings, we apply the forecast to two investment decisions; how to hedge the tanker market using time charter contracts and how to determine the optimal economic approach to lightering considering uncertainty in demand and in market returns. In both instances, we demonstrate how the use of an accurate tanker market forecast can be leveraged to make better managerial decisions, historically amounting up to 35 million dollars per year in the lightering decision and 10 million dollars per contract in the time charter investment.

Book excerpt: The relationship between trading volume, prices and return volatility is thoroughly investigated in different second-hand dry bulk and tanker market segments. The objective is to gain fruitful insight on the sale and purchase market dynamics, and the sensitivity of vessel price movements following the arrival of new information signals in the shipping markets. Contemporaneous relationships are identified between returns and volume, particularly in the markets of handysize and panamax bulks as well as of handysize and aframax tankers. Price changes are found to have an impact on trading volume indicating that expectations to higher capital gains induce increases in trading activity. Volume appears to have a negative impact on the volatility of price changes mainly in the dry bulk market; this may be due to thin trading, limited transaction transparency and absence of vessel price quotes. The empirical findings can contribute to a better understanding of shipping markets' microstructure and price volatility dynamics by market participants. This, in turn, can be useful for investors who construct their portfolios of real assets with a view to attain superior capital gains, controlling for the underlying investment risk.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using a novel dataset, we develop a structural model of the Very Large Crude Carrier (VLCC) market between the Arabian Gulf and the Far East. We study how fluctuations in oil tanker rates, oil exports, shipowner profits, and bunker fuel prices are determined by shocks to the supply and demand for oil tankers, to the utilization of tankers, and to bunker fuel costs. Our analysis shows that time charter rates respond only slightly to fuel cost shocks. In response to higher fuel costs, voyage profits decline, as cost shocks are only partially passed on to round-trip voyage rates. Oil exports from the Arabian Gulf also decline, reflecting lower demand for VLCCs. Positive utilization shocks are associated with higher profits, a slight increase in time charter rates and slightly lower fuel prices and oil export volumes. Tanker supply and tanker demand shocks have persistent effects on time charter rates, round-trip voyage rates, the volume of oil exports, fuel prices, and profits with the expected sign.
