Book excerpt: A multiyear program at the Air Force Geophysics Laboratory (AFGL) has produced an instrument for absolute gravity measurements accurate to eight decimal places. This transportable instrument has been used to measure gravity at a calibration line through the central part of the United States, as well as at Hanscom AFB, Mass. The final version of the equipment is described. Data processing procedures, corrections applied, and the determination of these corrections are given. The report also gives operation and maintenance procedures for the apparatus. Also included in the report is a history of the development of the absolute-gravity measuring apparatus, including development of the first prototype instrument, experiments with an apparatus incorporating a falling chamber-within-a-chamber, the ideas behind this approach, and the shortcomings that caused a return to the single-chamber approach.

This was the second flight in a series, and was intended to (1) test the use of differential GPS tracking; and (2) measure gravity at altitude. A balloon operates in a largely unpredictable environment, where little, if any ground truth data are available. The motions of the balloon must be very accurately accounted for in gravity estimation. The experimental package contained a full complement of inertial sensors, radar transponder, a GPS receiver, and gravimeter. THe first flight in October 1983 showed that tracking was the most difficult problem; the second flight included differential GPS tracking to overcome that problem. Book excerpt: Gravity measurements from a high-altitude balloon were made in late September to verify global and upward-continued gravity models. The first flight was intended to provide balloon motion and environment data with a preliminary estimate of the quality of measured gravity values. A balloon operates in a dynamic, largely unpredictable environment; thus, the gravimeter senses accelerations due to balloon motions as well as gravitational acceleration. Independent measurements of balloon motions from an intertial navigation package (three accelerometers, three rate gyros, three-axis magnetometer and two tiltmeters) combined with ground tracking (X, Y and Z position and velocity) will allow for separation of balloon-induced accelerations from gravitational acceleration to 1 mGal, using tracking data to an accuracy of about 5 cm/sec in velocity for Eotvos corrections, and position to 1 m. This first engineering flight was planned to coincide with the lowest seasonal wind velocities over Holloman AFB, where AFGL has its permanent balloon launch facility. Mild wind velocities are desired to provide the most benign environment possible during the testing phase, and to keep the balloon within tracking range. The experiment design, launch, and flight operations, and a first look at the data are presented.
