Book The Affirmations of Reason

Download or read book The Affirmations of Reason written by Sigurd Baark and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-01-08 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the speculative core of Karl Barth’s theology, reconsidering the relationship between theory and practice in Barth’s thinking. A consequence of this reconsideration is the recognition that Barth’s own account of his theological development is largely correct. Sigurd Baark draws heavily on the philosophical tradition of German Idealism, arguing that an important part of what makes Barth a speculative theologian is the way his thinking is informed by the nexus of self-consciousness, reason and, freedom, which was most fully developed by Kant, Fichte, and Hegel. The book provides a new interpretation of Barth’s theology, and shows how a speculative understanding of theology is useful in today’s intellectual climate.

Book excerpt: While most recent studies of Nietzsche's works have lost sight of the fundamental question of the meaning of a life characterized by inescapable suffering, Bernard Reginster's book The Affirmation of Life brings it sharply into focus. Book Errant Affirmations

    Book Details:
  • Author : David J. Kangas
  • Publisher : Bloomsbury Publishing
  • Release : 2017-11-30
  • ISBN : 1350020044
  • Pages : 209 pages

Download or read book Errant Affirmations written by David J. Kangas and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2017-11-30 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kierkegaard's religious discourses - his writings which have explicitly dealt with religion - have historically been given scant attention by philosophers. They have generally been considered to be of less philosophical interest than his 'proper' philosophy. Errant Affirmations radically questions this claim and considers Kierkegaard's religious writings as absolutely central to his philosophical vision. Through close and clear readings of Kierkegaard's work, David Kangas argues that contemporary philosophical themes - gift, temporality, language, death, nothingness, economy and selfhood- are not only evident in the 'religious' works but explored with real depth and fascination. Above all, the book argues that Kierkegaard's positive account of the human condition, his “ontology,” fully emerges only in these discourses. It shows how these discourses are organized around an “errant” kind of affirmation-namely, an affirmation of existence that is without conditions. Such affirmation involves the intensification of life around “today” and coincides with a joy that has no particular cause. It is an affirmation capable of affirming life even amidst its finitude and suffering. Errant Affirmations is a fresh interpretation of Kierkegaard's understudied works that not only opens up a new reading of Kierkegaard but elucidates his 'religious' texts and places them organically within his philosophy as a whole.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written by a Presbyterian preacher in the 1800's this book is revered by some and considered heresy by others. The arguments given in Finney's various lectures will cause many to consider their own positions and seek to justify what they believe. Finney deals with many different subjects going from moral law, government, love, depravity and other diverse but important subjects. Regardless of what your own position on these subjects are, this work is a good masterpiece of religious thought but the ideas and reasons for Finney's arguments may leave theologians wondering if such thinking is something we should be keeping around.

Book By Faith Alone

    Book Details:
  • Author : Lev Shestov
  • Publisher : Bloomsbury Publishing
  • Release : 2023-09-07
  • ISBN : 1350362336
  • Pages : 401 pages

Download or read book By Faith Alone written by Lev Shestov and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2023-09-07 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lev Shestov's By Faith Alone confronts Eastern and Western European conceptions of faith through Russian literature, ancient and medieval philosophy, and Christian theology. Written from 1910-1914, this first English-language translation brings together important early writings on the medieval church and Martin Luther. Shestov reconciles the Greek notion of rational truth with Biblical revelation by drawing on a wide range of ancient, medieval, philosophical and theological sources from Plato to Hegel, Tertullian to Saint Augustine , and Saint Bernard of Clairvaux to William of Ockam. He argues that rational truth has skewed Christian belief by determining knowledge and truth in ways that prize the mind over the world. This approach marks a turning point in the evolution of Shestov's existential thought. It establishes a basic division that became central to Shestov's later work, between Athens as reason and Jerusalem as faith. By Faith Alone provides a crucial piece of the puzzle in the genesis of Shestov's later and better-known writings on medieval philosophy.

Book Rethinking the Medieval Legacy for Contemporary Theology

Download or read book Rethinking the Medieval Legacy for Contemporary Theology written by Anselm K. Min and published by University of Notre Dame Pess. This book was released on 2014-10-27 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Rethinking the Medieval Legacy for Contemporary Theology, six distinguished theologians bridge medieval and contemporary theologies by developing the theological significance of medieval insights in response to contemporary issues. Their nuanced readings of medieval texts, extended to major theological issues of our time, provide examples of the retrieval of the medieval tradition, an essential part of any contemporary theological reconstruction. Barbara Newman extends the theology of perichoresis or mutual indwelling to illuminate the relationship between donor and recipient in the case of organ transplants; Marilyn McCord Adams applies insights about divine friendship to the perennial issue of horrendous evil; and Kevin Madigan brings principles of medieval exegesis to bear on the contemporary historical critical approach to biblical interpretation. Ingolf U. Dalferth applies insights from the doctrine of divine omnipotence and creation ex nihilo to deconstruct Heidegger’s limitation of the possibilities of authentic existence to historical facticity. Pim Valkenberg explores the possibilities of a theological encounter between Christianity and Islam in the works of Aquinas and Nicholas of Cusa; and Anselm K. Min applies the analogical insights of Aquinas on the nature and limits of human knowledge of God to a critique of contemporary theologies that claim to know either too little or too much about God.

Book Hegel The Phenomenology of Spirit

Download or read book Hegel The Phenomenology of Spirit written by Michael Inwood and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-02-15 with total page 640 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: G. W. F. Hegel's first masterpiece, the Phenomenology of Spirit, is one of the great works of philosophy. It remains, however, one of the most challenging and mysterious books ever written. Michael Inwood presents this central work to the modern reader in an intelligible and accurate new translation. This translation attempts to convey, as accurately as possible, the subtle nuances of the original German text. Inwood also provides a detailed commentary that explains what Hegel is saying at each stage of his argument and also discusses the philosophical issues it raises. This volume will therefore prove invaluable to those who want to get to grips with Hegel's thought processes and to follow his complex argument.
