Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Aesthetic Treatment of Bridge Structures: With an Abstract of the Discussion Upon the Paper In the treatment of such a subject, it is manifestly impossible to attempt to lay down definite laws for guidance in the design of engineering structures; and it is the object of this Paper to notice a few of the more salient features of design in modern bridge con struction, which, considered with a due regard to correct propor tion and pleasing appearance, go far to enhance the aesthetic effect of the completed work. Book Artistic Bridge Design

Download or read book Artistic Bridge Design written by Henry Grattan Tyrrell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-17 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Artistic Bridge Design: A Systematic Treatise on the Design of Modern Bridges According to Aesthetic Principles A lack of artistic treatment is the greatest fault of American bridges. These structures are worthy of greater thought and study because they are usually such conspicuous objects in the landscape. The lack of art is no doubt partly due to the dearth of literature on the subject and the difficulty in securing good illustrations, and it is hoped that this book will assist in producing better results. The most important work in connection with any great building enterprise is the preparation of the design, for on this the success or failure of the project depends. If the design is faulty, the money, time and thought spent on its construction are largely wasted, and all the labor of engineers, contractors and artisans is lost. If the design is lacking in beauty, the strue ture may remain for centuries as a mockery to its originators, unless fortunately it should collapse through structural weak ness and give place to another one, more worthy. Book Bridges

Download or read book Bridges written by Fritz Leonhardt and published by MIT Press (MA). This book was released on 1984 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This beautifully illustrated book describes the development of bridges from the primitive wooden beam and masonry arch to today's large steel and prestressed concrete structures spanning rivers and valleys and highways. The author, who has taught at the University of Stuttgart for many years, is one of Europe's leading structural engineers. This is his account of what he has learned from a lifetime devoted to the design of bridges. His selection of photographs, including over 300 in full color, is exceptional, with examples chosen to illustrate key design ideas. Care has been taken to show each bridge from the best possible angle with attention to depth, detail, and color. Chapters take up design and aesthetics in bridge construction, discussing the influence of alignment and of building materials, and cover particular kinds of structures such as old stone bridges, bridges at grade-separated junctions, elevated streets, large beam bridges, large arch and frame bridges, and cable-stayed and suspension bridges. Bridgesis included in The MIT Press Series in Structural Mechanics, edited by H. Max Irvine.

Book Aesthetic Concrete Barrier Design

Download or read book Aesthetic Concrete Barrier Design written by Delbert Lance Bullard and published by Transportation Research Board. This book was released on 2006 with total page 87 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report contains guidelines for aesthetic treatment of concrete safety shape barriers. The report will be of particular interest to design and safety practitioners with responsibility for roadside safety improvements. The increasing application of context-sensitive design solutions for highway projects has created a national need for aesthetic improvement of typical highway features. Requests for concrete barrier treatments and bridge rails that contribute to the overall aesthetic experience are increasing. Concrete barriers (e.g., New Jersey, F-shapes, single-slope, and vertical-face designs) are often the barriers of choice in urban and suburban environments. Many transportation agencies and communities have expressed a desire for aesthetic treatments for these standard shapes. To date, there has been limited evaluation to determine which aesthetic treatments are safe and practical. Designers need guidance regarding the safety implications of aesthetic treatments for concrete barriers.
