Book excerpt: Abhinavagupta was a Kashmiri practitioner of the Sanskrit tradition, well-known to those very few researchers who follow theories on Indian aesthetics. His contribution to the tradition of aesthetic theories is extensive; he established a university to educate 10,000 students in aesthetics, tantra vigyan and traditional Sanskrit theories, and he authored 47 books, out of which 23 are still in existence. Students, researchers and faculties from Sanskrit departments, as well as Sanskrit practitioners, should be exposed to the illuminating practices available in Indian traditions and the theories originating in Kashmir. In this book, a detailed analysis is carried out on Abhinavagupta’s two splendid commentaries, Locana on Dhvanyāloka and Abhinavabhāratī on Nātyaśāstra. Abhinavagupta presented the views of Lollata, Saankuka and Bhattanayaka, with each view followed by relevant criticism. He also set forth his own views in great detail and these are widely discussed in this text. The book will be of interest to scholars from the fields of Indian aesthetics, Natyashastra, principles of meaning, literary criticism, Indology, Sanskrit texts and linguistics.

We will focus here above all on Hindu aesthetics as developed by Abhinavagupta, one of the highest representatives of Kashmir Shivaism. The ultimate nature of aesthetic experience is at stake here, and Abhinavagupta develops that crucial idea consisting in the comparison of aesthetic experience with mystical experience, of aesthetic enjoyment with the ânanda that characterizes the knower of Brahman. In this way the true "work of art" becomes a path that leads to spiritual fulfillment through authentic yogic contemplation of both the creative artist and the active receiver capable of transcending their egoic limitations, their mental movements. Art is conceived as shut up in books, concert-halls, and museums; as, perhaps, a legitimate preoccupation on a trip to Europe; but under ordinary circumstances a relaxation, and if more than that, a distraction or even a dissipation. For a few individuals, writers, musicians, or painters, it is more than a by-play or avocation; but for the mass Of men concern with it is an interlude, and its production is of course out of the question. In this it resembles religion. To go to a museum and to go to church alike involve a break with our usual habits. Both are expeditions into worlds other than that in, which our every-day Occupations go on. And both worlds are suspect from the point of view of the habitual dweller in the real world. The man who attempts to treat the precepts of religion as applicable to his business or personal relations is as little to be considered fully sane as the man whose life centers about art: both are at least likely to be queer.
