Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Advertising Book, 1916 The chief purpose of "The First Advertising Book" - 1916 - is to put into form for convenient reference some of the available records of recent progress in advertising methods. This is done with two separate objects in view. One object is to give to such persons as may be interested in advertising (but who are not familiar with its inner workings in its modern forms) a clear idea of what is being done from within to make more effective this part of the present-day selling mechanism. The other, and the more important object, is to help those who are actively engaged in selling operations to acquire a working familiarity with some of the events forming current advertising history. To such persons, the records of these events may have suggestive value in connection with efforts to reduce waste in the processes of distributing merchandise. In the conclusion of "Advertising as a Business Force," a similar compilation made for the Associated Clubs in 1912-13, 1 called attention to three lines in which it seemed to me advertising was making distinct progress: 1. Immediate contact with selling. 2. Accurate knowledge as a basis for action, and 3. Exacting standards of honor. This new compilation of some articles which have appeared during the past two years serves to show clearly that the progress being made in each of these lines -as well as in others - is of a substantial character. The present volume may be said to have been built around the following sentence at the close of "Advertising as a Business Force": "It does not require the gift of prophecy, then, to foresee the very imminent coming of the time when the very highest possible standards of honor in advertising appeal will not merely be 'good business' but will be absolutely essential to any advertising appeal which can be expected to have any real effect." Book excerpt: At age fifteen, Ned Halloran lost both of his parents--and almost his own life--when the Titanic sank. Determined to keep what little he has, he returns to his homeland of Ireland and enrolls at Saint Edna's school in Dublin. Saint Edna's headmaster is the renowned scholar and poet, Patrick Pearse--who is soon to gain greater fame as a rebel and patriot. Ned becomes deeply involved with the growing revolution . . . and the sacrifices it will demand. Through Ned's eyes, Morgan Llywelyn's 1916 examines the Irish fight for freedom--inspired by poets and schoolteachers, fueled by a desperate desire for independence, and played out in the historic streets of Dublin against the background of World War I. It is a story of the brave men and heroic women who, for a few unforgettable days, managed to hold out against the might of the British Empire. Book excerpt: The Easter Rising of 1916 not only destroyed much of the centre of Dublin - it changed the course of Irish history. But how did it achieve this? What role did people from ordinary backgrounds play in the making of the Irish revolution and what motivated them to take part in it? What did the rebels think they could achieve? And what kind of a republic were they fighting for? These basic questions continue to divide historians of modern Ireland. The Rising is the story of Easter 1916 from the perspective of those who made it, focusing on the experiences of rank and file revolutionaries - a story now told for the first time. To do this, Fearghal McGarry makes use of a unique source that has only recently seen the light of day - a collection of over 1,700 eye-witness statements detailing the activities of members of Sinn Féin, the Irish Republican Brotherhood, Cumann na mBan, and the Irish Volunteers at the time of the Rising. This collection represents one of the richest and most comprehensive oral history archives devoted to any modern revolution, providing new insights on almost every aspect of this seminal period. Using this unique source, McGarry shows how people from ordinary backgrounds became politicized and involved in the struggle for Irish independence in the early years of the twentieth century. He illuminates their motives and aspirations and highlights the importance of the Great War as a catalyst for the uprising. He concludes by exploring the Rising's revolutionary aftermath, which saw the creation of an Irish parliament, Dáil Éireann, and the Irish Republican Army's armed campaign to win independence.

Book excerpt: So much of the literature on the First World War centers on the trench warfare of the Western Front, and these were essential battlegrounds. But the war was in fact truly a global conflict, and by focusing on a sequence of events in 1916 across many continents, historian Keith Jeffery's magisterial work casts new light on the Great War. Starting in January with the end of the catastrophic Gallipoli campaign, Jeffery recounts the massive struggle for Verdun over February and March; the Easter Rising in Ireland in April; dramatic events in Russia in June on the eastern front; the familiar story of the war in East Africa, where some 200,000 Africans may have died; and the November U.S. presidential race in which Woodrow Wilson was re-elected on a platform of keeping the United States out of the war--a position he reversed within five months. Incorporating the stories of civilians in all countries, both participants in and victims of the war, 1916: A Global History is a major addition to the literature and the Great War by a historian at the height of his powers.
