This book was released on 2018-10-10 with total page 562 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE PIRATE-SCIENTIST WILLIAM DAMPIER (1651-1715) lived at a remarkable time in human history: at the dawn of modern science and at the intersection of three golden ages: the golden ages of sail, exploration, and piracy. Curious to see the world and keen to add to the world's sum total of useful knowledge, he ventured out upon the high seas. He kept a careful account of his adventures in the world's Torrid Zone, describing as he went the soil, rivers, harbors, tides, currents, winds, plants, fruits and animals of the lands he visited, together with the inhabitants, their customs, religion, government and trade. Dampier was a poor pirate, but precisely because he was a pirate he was able to travel the world and discover true and lasting treasure: hard and useful foundational knowledge in the realms of science, natural history, economics and political economy, hydrography, botany, zoology, ethnography, anthropology, navigation, geography, map-making, literature, and language. His story begins in A New Voyage Round the World. Search Amazon for "tomes maritime dampier" and discover: THE DAMPIER COLLECTION Vol. 1. A New Voyage Round the World by William Dampier Vol. 2. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Complete Works of William Dampier: Containing Particular Descriptions of Life in the Torrid Zone at the Dawn of Modern Science and at the Intersection of the Golden Age of Sail, the Golden Age of Exploration, and the Golden Age of Piracy THE PIRATE-SCIENTIST WILLIAM DAMPIER (1651-1715) lived at a remarkable time in human history: at the dawn of modern science and at the intersection of three golden ages: the golden ages of sail, exploration, and piracy. Curious to see the world and keen to add to the world's sum total of useful knowledge, he ventured out upon the high seas. He kept a careful account of his adventures in the world's Torrid Zone, describing as he went the soil, rivers, harbours, tides, currents, winds, plants, fruits and animals of the lands he visited, together with the inhabitants, their customs, religion, government and trade. WILLIAM DAMPIER sailed the great southern Pacific ocean four times, was the third Englishman to circumnavigate the globe, was the first person to circumnavigate the globe three times, was the first person to visit six continents, captained England's first scientific expedition, and touched Australian shores nearly 100 years before Captain James Cook. His writing immediately made him famous throughout Europe and impacted England's great poets and writers: Lord Byron, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Daniel Defoe, and Jonathan Swift. His scientific efforts influenced the work of Charles Darwin, Alexander von Humboldt, Edmund Halley, and Matthew Flinders. His writing inspired the English to challenge the Spanish and Dutch dominance in the South Seas. He wrote of free trade a century before Adam Smith. He introduced important new words to the English language, words like: banana, barbeque, castaway, sea-breeze, and subspecies. He was once left for dead by a crew of vicious mutineers, but survived against all odds. Book Wafer s New Voyage and Description of the Isthmus of Darien

This book was released on 2013-10 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Doctor Wafer's Amazing Story LIONEL WAFER was a pirate-surgeon, prowling the West Indies and South Seas with the likes of William Dampier, Basil Ringrose, William Ambrosia Cowley, Captain Bartholomew Sharp and Captain Edward Cook. He chose the life of a buccaneer in 1679 when he abandoned his medical practice in Port Royal to join a pirate crew intent on sacking Panama City. This fateful decision would lead to a decade of dangerous undertakings. IN 1681, while crossing from the Pacific to Atlantic side of the Isthmus of Darien, Dr. Wafer had his knee burned to the bone in a tragic gunpowder-drying incident. Left by his companions, he rested and recovered in the company of the so-called wild Cuna Indians. He spent four months among them, learning their language and customs, and culminating in his famous description of the Cuna and their country. Written from memory, this volume contains Wafer's own account of his voyage and adventures and provides a unique first-hand glimpse into the pirating and sailing life of the seventeenth-century and into the lives of the Cuna (Moskito) Indians, who lived upon the Isthmus of Darien. This is a must read work for anyone interested in: Pirates, the Indians of Central America, Panama, Description and travel, and natural history. THE DAMPIER COLLECTION Vol. 1. Book Funnell s a Voyage Round the World Tomes Maritime

This book was released on 2018-10-21 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: William Funnell wrote a fantastic account of William Dampier's privateering excursion into the South Seas in the ship St George, in the years 1703 And 1704. Funnell was a mutinous sea-dog who, along with his fellow band of fools, ensured the failure of Dampier's privateering expedition and marooned Dampier and loyal crew members in the South Sea. The mutineers alerted the Spaniards to Dampier's marooning by releasing the Spanish prisoners. Fully expecting Dampier to die in the South Seas, Funnell returned and prepared a manuscript in which he aggrandizes himself and denigrates Dampier. This slanderous book prompted Dampier to publish his now infamous "vindication" in which Dampier heatedly points out Funnell's propensity for humbug. Dampier's Vindication is provided as a prologue in order to provide context from a more reliable narrator. Search Amazon for "tomes maritime dampier" and discover: THE DAMPIER COLLECTION Vol. 1. This book was released on 2018-10-15 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 300+ years ago, motivated by a "sacred hunger for gold," an ordinary sailor accompanied Captain Sharp and several hundred other cut-throats on a piratical maritime pilgrimage in the South Seas of the Spanish Main. This humble sailor kept a journal of his voyage, which contains the plain sailing details a sailor might record in his journal, but it also contains a record of the violent assaults and murderous rampage he and his fellow sea-dogs brought upon the Spanish America's West coast. Accounts of this piratical expedition were written by William Dampier, Basil Ringrose, Dick Williams and Captain Sharp - of all these accounts, this plain sailor's journal might be considered the most basic and unvarnished of them all. Book excerpt: WOODES ROGERS commanded a privateering expedition with Royal permission to engage the French and Spanish and take what booty he could. The expedition took two ships - the Dutch and the Dutchess - clear around the world and met with great success. The journey was navigated by William Dampier, who was and given the honorable title of "Pilot of the South-Seas." The voyage had many remarkable events, including the unlikely rescue of the marooned Alexander Selkirk, who's life would form the model for the famous novel Robinson Crusoe. On December 22, 1709, the expedition took the Nostra Seniora de la Incarnacion Disenganio, the first of the year's Manila Galleons bound for Acapulco. Rogers was a master mariner, a wildly successful privateer and scrupulously kept a journal of his remarkable circumnavigation of the globe, which was published upon his return to England as Cruising Voyage Round the World. Book excerpt: William Dampier and Lionel Wafer despised Captain Bartholomew Sharp as a coward and entirely unfit for command. Basil (Baz) Ringrose thought Sharp a bold commander of excellent conduct. He was twice voted out of his Captaincy and only regained it when his replacements were killed. He thwarted a crew's plan to murder him by having them drink the ship's store of wine before executing their plans to murder him on Christmas day, 1680, denying them the alcohol they needed to get their courage up. He pillaged and plundered Spanish towns and ships up and down the Western coast of the Americas. Problem was, England and Spain were at peace. The Spaniards pressed King Charles II to prosecute Sharp for piracy. Instead, Sharp presented King Charles II with a rare book of Spanish maps, outlining unknown lands for the English. Instead of dangling at the end of a rope Sharp received a royal pardon. No matter how bold Sharp was, he never made his fortune raiding the Spanish. He was destined to die in a Dutch debtors prison on St. Thomas Island in the Caribbean. Sharp took over two dozen prize ships in his life, but failed to secure any significant booty. He was bold, daring and unlucky. It may not have been a charmed life, but Sharp did indeed live a life well-worth the reading - for entertainment and historical insight into the golden age of piracy. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The British Admiralty made William Dampier Captain of England's first official voyage of discovery. In a barely sea-worthy ship, Dampier sailed to the shores of New Holland. It was the second time he'd touch the shores of Australia. In the going out and returning, Dampier made numerous discoveries amongst the remotest of the East India Islands, the distant shores of New-Holland, and New-Guinea. Includes: maps and illustrations particular the voyage.Dampier shared these discoveries with an eager audience in these two volumes. The first of these two New Holland volumes was published in 1703 and the second six years later-after Dampier had returned from his third circumnavigation round the world. The voyage to New Holland saw Dampier complete his second circumnavigation of the world, a remark-able feat considering the ship he'd been assigned threatened to rot away under the crew's feet and, indeed, did sink while at anchor. He played a major role in the most successful privateering expedition of the early 18th Century. Sailing with Captains Woodes Rogers and William Dampier aboard the Duke and Dutchess, he took part in capturing one of the rich Manila prizes and fought in several engagements with the Spanish on land and on the South Sea. Cooke kept a detailed journal of their adventures and augmented it with historical accounts of the Incan Empire, the exploration of the Amazon River, and the Spaniard's conquest of New Spain, Peru, and Chili. His journal was published with maps of the Amazon, South Seas and coast of America plundered from Spanish prizes. From the plundered Spanish Waggoners, he provides the hitherto most detailed description of the seas and coasts of the Spanish Americas: from California to Cape Horn. Includes hundreds of images and maps.
