Download or read book The Adventures of the Matterhorn written by Raymond Monsen and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2012-12-27 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John and Billy Kyburg were thirteen-year-old twin boys. Next came Sally, a twelve-year-old girl; then Sadie, an eight-year-old girl; and finally a five-year-old boy named Benny. That spring, their grandfather had died and left all the children a small charter fishing boat. They lived in a small seaport village named Pirates Cove. It was given that name because, when you came into the harbor, there was a little cove surrounded by tall trees where pirates used to hide their ships from the law in the olden days.

Book The Matterhorn

Download or read book The Matterhorn written by Steffen Kjær and published by Alpine Avenue Books. This book was released on 2011-12-04 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following the author's struggles on the mountain of Matterhorn, this book offers an account of the mountain's history, including the legendary first ascent in 1865, as well as a factual description of the symptoms and mechanisms of altitude sickness. No other mountain in the world is as fascinating as the Matterhorn. Since the dramatic first ascent in 1865, the drama and the myths have created a unique interest in this mountain, which has probably caused the deaths of more mountaineers than any other. Each year, thousands of climbers attempt to reach the summit, but only one in five succeeds. And every season, the mountain claims the lives of ten to twenty climbers.

They wanted to have a birthday party for the twins. Mrs. Kyburg asked, What do you have in mind? Sally spoke, It was actually Sadies idea to take the twins on the Matterhorn to New York City to see the Fourth of July fireworks. The snack bar is closed Mondays, and the whole family could go. Mr. and Mrs. Kyburg nodded their heads. They both agreed it was a wonderful idea. Mrs. Kyburg said they should also invite Chris and Bobby Williams. They were twins who moved to Pirates Cove from Boston, Massachusetts, four years ago. They were both in Johnny and Billys class and were constant companions of the Kyburg twins since they moved here. Their father was transferred from a Boston hospital to be the head surgeon at a state university hospital a few miles from Pirates Cove. Both sets of twins played in a summer baseball league and were looking forward to play for the Pirates Cove High School JV team in the spring. Mr. Kyburg was too busy in the snack bar to take people out for hire, but he said he talked to their uncle Raymond on their mother’s side who had a captain’s license. Book excerpt: Intense, powerful, and compelling, Matterhorn is an epic war novel in the tradition of Norman Mailer’s The Naked and the Dead and James Jones’s The Thin Red Line. It is the timeless story of a young Marine lieutenant, Waino Mellas, and his comrades in Bravo Company, who are dropped into the mountain jungle of Vietnam as boys and forced to fight their way into manhood. Standing in their way are not merely the North Vietnamese but also monsoon rain and mud, leeches and tigers, disease and malnutrition. Almost as daunting, it turns out, are the obstacles they discover between each other: racial tension, competing ambitions, and duplicitous superior officers. But when the company finds itself surrounded and outnumbered by a massive enemy regiment, the Marines are thrust into the raw and all-consuming terror of combat. The experience will change them forever. Written by a highly decorated Marine veteran over the course of thirty years, Matterhorn is a spellbinding and unforgettable novel that brings to life an entire world—both its horrors and its thrills—and seems destined to become a classic of combat literature.

Book Fall of Heaven

Download or read book Fall of Heaven written by Reinhold Messner and published by Mountaineers Books. This book was released on 2017-08-15 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A classic event in mountaineering history, dramatically retold by a classic mountaineer • Ascending the Matterhorn was the 19th century equivalent of standing on Mars • A great historical story of tension and drama • Author is uniquely qualified to delve into Whymper’s complicated personality As Fall of Heaven begins, we join professional mountain guide Jean-Antoine Carrel as he tries and fails, again and again, to summit the Matterhorn—one of the most famous and iconic peaks in the Alps. Is it the “Devil’s mountain,” as the locals call it? Should he heed the village priest who warned that its summit was not meant to be climbed? Carrel is undeterred, he just needs capable climbers to join him. Enter Edward Whymper, who in 1861 at the age of 21 decided—unbeknownst to Carrel—that he would be the first to climb the Matterhorn. So the storyline is set, except that where Carrel is captivating, Whymper is utterly unsympathetic as an adventurer. He is mean and disdainful of guides, describing them as little more than porters who eat and drink too much. Despite this attitude, Whymper’s quest leads him inexorably into partnership with Carrel. The story follows their many attempts to find a route to the top of the Matterhorn, but then fate pulls them apart just as Whymper finds the line. His successful summit on July 14, 1865, in which Carrel did not take part, shocked the Victorian world with both awe and revulsion as four members of Whymper’s party died in frightening falls. Famed climber and author Reinhold Messner acknowledges that Whymper was the first man to summit the Matterhorn, the last of the great Alpine peaks to be climbed and representing the beginning of an age of alpinism based on difficulty rather than conquest. But rather than leaving a hero’s legacy, Whymper is revealed as the Captain Ahab of alpinism, a team leader who accepted no responsibility for the deaths of his teammates. Fall of Heaven is an exciting tale and an examination of the different types of men who were caught up in the adventuring spirit of the Victorian age, and the ironic fates that can follow success or failure.
