Download or read book The Adventures of Philip on His Way Through the World Vol 1 of 2 written by W. M. Thackeray and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-20 with total page 546 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Adventures of Philip on His Way Through the World, Vol. 1 of 2: Shewing Who Robbed Him, Who Helped Him, and Who Passed Him By; To Which Is Now Prefixed a Shabby Genteel Story There is an autobiographical interest in philip, indi cated by Thackeray's statement to Mr. George Smith that the hero in certain numbers will, entre now, take pretty much the career of W. M. T. In the first years of his min and absurdly imprudent marriage; but the statement must be taken in a very general sense. Cer tain of the Paris passages are frankly reminiscent; and if such a one as the capital scene in the British Embassy does not repeat actual experience, it probably comes very close to that of the W. M. T. Of those days. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Philip Firmin, son of Dr. Brand Firmin and of Lord Ringwood's wealthy niece, has been left a fortune at the death of his mother. He discovers that his father is being blackmailed by Tufton Hunt, a clergyman who once performed a sham marriage ceremony between Brandon and Caroline Gann (as related in A Shabby Genteel Story). Hunt now claims that the marriage was in fact valid, and urges Caroline to assert her rights and disinherit Philip by proving him illegitimate. Caroline, who is now working as a nurse and in this capacity has brought Philip through a serious illness, refuses to do this. Dr Firmin loses Philip's money and his own through unwise speculation and flees to America, and Philip's fiancée Agnes Twysden renounces him in favour of a wealthier rival. Philip now meets General Baynes, one of the trustees of his lost fortune, and falls in love with the General's daughter Charlotte. He marries her, in the teeth of her mother's opposition, and struggles to support her by becoming a journalist. His troubles are ended when the lost will of his great-uncle, Lord Ringwood, is discovered, and he is found to be the heir to the old man's riches.

This book was released on 2013-01-11 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This project provides an in-depth study of narratives about Bluebeard and his wives, or narratives with identifiable Bluebeard motifs, and the intertextual and extratextual personal, political, literary, and sociocultural factors that have made the tale a particularly fertile ground for an author’s adaptation of the story. Whereas Charles Dickens, for example, expresses a sympathetic identification with Bluebeard, and a discernable strain of misogyny emerges in his recreation of the tale and recurrent allusions to it, his contemporary, William Makepeace Thackeray, uses the tale as a springboard for his critique of avarice, hypocrisy, pretension, and the subjugation of women in Victorian society.
