Book excerpt: The Mole had been working very hard all the morning, spring-cleaning his little home.First with brooms, then with dusters; then on ladders and steps and chairs, with a brushand a pail of whitewash; till he had dust in his throat and eyes, and splashes ofwhitewash all over his black fur, and an aching back and weary arms. Spring wasmoving in the air above and in the earth below and around him, penetrating even hisdark and lowly little house with its spirit of divine discontent and longing. It was smallwonder, then, that he suddenly flung down his brush on the floor, said 'Bother!' and 'Oblow!' and also 'Hang spring-cleaning!' and bolted out of the house without even waitingto put on his coat. Something up above was calling him imperiously, and he made forthe steep little tunnel which answered in his case to the gravelled carriage-drive ownedby animals whose residences are nearer to the sun and air. So he scraped andscratched and scrabbled and scrooged and then he scrooged again and scrabbled andscratched and scraped, working busily with his little paws and muttering to himself, 'Upwe go! Up we go!' till at last, pop! his snout came out into the sunlight, and he foundhimself rolling in the warm grass of a great meadow.

Book excerpt: If you go down to the woods today you will discover an enchanting fantasy for kids that echoes one of the most beloved animal stories of all time, 'The Wind in the Willows'. Meet Rat, Mole, Badger, and Toad of Toad Hall in a brand new animal adventure telling of helping others and the trials of family and friends. It is a quiet day on the riverbank when Rat and Mole decide to go for a picnic. The wind in the willows is soft and lulls Rat to sleep, but Mole decides to go for a walk and comes across Badger, who is on his way to see Toad of Toad Hall. It turns out that Toad's insufferable cousin, Florence, has invited herself to stay. Toad suggests family and friends come together so that Mole, Rat and Badger can see just how awful she is. The day arrives and Florence turns out to be just as mean as she was painted. Horrified at Toad's predicament, the friends set about trying to come up with a plan to free him from the menace that is Florence. But this is a problem that has to be handled with utmost care, and for their animal adventure to succeed, the four may have to turn to that group of animals least concerned with helping others: the weasels. A charming fantasy for kids, 'The Adventures of Mr Toad' follows in the footsteps of other cherished animal stories, and is alight with humour, adventure and friendship.

Book The Making of the Wind in the Willows

Download or read book The Making of the Wind in the Willows written by Peter Hunt and published by Bodleian Library. This book was released on 2018 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Wind in the Willows has its origins in the bedtime stories that Kenneth Grahame told to his son Alastair and then continued in letters (now held in the Bodleian Library) while he was on holiday. But the book developed into something much more sophisticated than this, as Peter Hunt shows. He identifies the colleagues and friends on whom Grahame is thought to have based the characters of Mole, Rat, Badger and Toad, and explores the literary genres of boating, caravanning and motoring books on which the author drew. He also recounts the extraordinary correspondence surrounding the book's first publication and the influence of two determined women - Elspeth Grahame and publisher's agent Constance Smedley - who helped turn the book into the classic for children we know and love today, when it was almost entirely intended for adults.Generously illustrated with original drawings, fan letters (including one from President Roosevelt) and archival material, this book explores the mysteries surrounding one of the most successful works of children's literature ever published.

Book A Jane Austen Education

Download or read book A Jane Austen Education written by William Deresiewicz and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2011-04-28 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An eloquent memoir of a young man's life transformed by literature. In A Jane Austen Education, Austen scholar William Deresiewicz turns to the author's novels to reveal the remarkable life lessons hidden within. With humor and candor, Deresiewicz employs his own experiences to demonstrate the enduring power of Austen's teachings. Progressing from his days as an immature student to a happily married man, Deresiewicz's A Jane Austen Education is the story of one man's discovery of the world outside himself. A self-styled intellectual rebel dedicated to writers such as James Joyce and Joseph Conrad, Deresiewicz never thought Austen's novels would have anything to offer him. But when he was assigned to read Emma as a graduate student at Columbia, something extraordinary happened. Austen's devotion to the everyday, and her belief in the value of ordinary lives, ignited something in Deresiewicz. He began viewing the world through Austen's eyes and treating those around him as generously as Austen treated her characters. Along the way, Deresiewicz was amazed to discover that the people in his life developed the depth and richness of literary characters-that his own life had suddenly acquired all the fascination of a novel. His real education had finally begun. Weaving his own story-and Austen's-around the ones her novels tell, Deresiewicz shows how her books are both about education and themselves an education. Her heroines learn about friendship and feeling, staying young and being good, and, of course, love. As they grow up, they learn lessons that are imparted to Austen's reader, who learns and grows by their sides. A Jane Austen Education is a testament to the transformative power of literature, a celebration of Austen's mastery, and a joy to read. Whether for a newcomer to Austen or a lifelong devotee, Deresiewicz brings fresh insights to the novelist and her beloved works. Ultimately, Austen's world becomes indelibly entwined with our own, showing the relevance of her message and the triumph of her vision.
