Book excerpt: The Awakening is the first of the Chico Bear Adventures novels. Dr. Ben Hamilton is a Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES), and a health education professor at California State University, Chico (Chico State). He has two Welsh Corgis named Kirby and Gracie. Ben stumbles upon two large almond fruits hanging on a tree in his backyard. The two almonds do not contain nuts, rather, Chico Bears, mythical creatures that once roamed the land in Northern California. Ben, with the help of Old Wise Muzza, brings the two Chico Bears to life. We learn the two Chico Bears are named Matthew and Andrew, who have taken on human form, and appear to be in sixth grade (age 11) and fourth grade (age 9). The boys possess supernatural powers, well beyond the abilities of mere mortals. Although Chico Bears appear human, their adoptive family members see them for who they really are whereas other humans see them as two human boys. In the 1800s, General John Bidwell sent away all Chico Bears to hide them from the dark forces and the Evil One. All of those Chico Bears are now long gone and are spirits, waiting for Matthew and Andrew to bring them home to Chico. The spirits must be returned to Chico, and then merged with their brethren in the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range. The boys meet their first Chico Bear spirit in Bidwell Mansion named Sierra. This meeting at Bidwell Mansion sets the professor and the boys on an adventure to find all Chico Bear spirits, and to bring them home to Chico.

Download or read book The Last Polar Bear written by Steven Kazlowski and published by Braided River. This book was released on 2008 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scientists agree that by the end of this century the polar bear will be the first mammal threatened with extinction due to climate change. "The Last Polar Bear" is the first book to fully document that story. The continued survival of these magnificent white bears in their warming, and melting, Arctic world is uncertain, yet their fate is also a wake-up call compelling us to act now to stem global warming. Through Steven Kazlowski's unparalleled imagery, the most critical environmental issue of our time is brought to life."The Last Polar Bear" places the reality of climate change in our hands. We see the plight of the polar bear, an animal already feeling the detrimental effects of our reliance on fossil fuels, as its icy habitat melts.Over the course of the last six years, wildlife photographer Steven Kazlowski has photographed the polar bear in its wild habitat, from Hershel Island in Canada to Point Hope in Alaska. "The Last Polar Bear" pairs his intimate images with anecdotes about his Arctic adventures, as well as authoritative essays about the polar bear in the context of climate change.Alaska based writers Richard Nelson, Charles Wohlforth, Nick Jans, and leading USGS polar bear biologist Steven C. Amstrup draw on decades of experience in the Arctic to cover the biological, cultural, and anthropological aspects of climate change. Dan Glick, long-time correspondent for "Newsweek", addresses the history of climate change while Frances Beinecke, president of the Natural Resources Defence Council, and Theodore Roosevelt IV offer perspectives on activism and politics.

Book The Adventures of the Mountain Men

Download or read book The Adventures of the Mountain Men written by Stephen Brennan and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2017-07-25 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Incredible stories from those who thrived in the Wild West. The “mountain men” were the hunters and trappers who fiercely strode the Rocky Mountains in the early to mid-1800s. They braved the elements in search of the skins of beavers and other wild animals, to sell or barter for goods. The lifestyle of the mountain men could be harsh, existing as they did among animals, and spending most of their days and nights living and camping out in the great unexplored wilds of the Rockies. Life outdoors presented many threats, not least among them Native Americans, who were hostile to the mountain men encroaching on the area for their own purposes. For a certain kind of pioneer, this risk and more were outweighed by the benefits of living free, without the restrictions and boundaries of “civilized” settlements. Included in this collection are tales from great writers, including: Washington Irving Stanley Vestal Osborne Russell Francis Parkman Jr. And many more! In The Adventures of the Mountain Men, New York Times bestselling author Stephen Brennan has compiled many of the best stories about the mountain men—the most daring exploits, the death-defying chances taken to hunt big game, the clashes with the arrows of Native Americans, and also the moments when the men were struck by the incomparable beauty of the unsullied, majestic Rocky Mountains.
