This book was released on 2018-01-31 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Adventures of Hajji Baba, of Ispahan, Vol. 1 of 2 Although the principal function of a work of fiction is to entertain, to describe H ajji Baba merely as an entertaining story would be to give a most inadequate idea of its value. The amusement which it affords to the ordinary novel-reader, who seeks from its perusal nothing beyond amusement, is, moreover, amply attested by the favourable reception accorded to the book on its first appearance in 1824, and by the several editions (in 1828, 1835, 1856, 1863, etc.) which have since been called for. It has long been ranked amongst standard English novels, nor is it likely to be displaced so long as the English nation is able to appreciate good literature. Every cultivated Englishman who has not read Hajji Baba (if, indeed, the Englishman who has read it not can, in the full meaning of the term, be described as cultivated) should at once proceed to remedy this defect in his education. If he be a normally constituted person, with a reasonably well-developed sense of humour, he will hardly lay the book aside until he has finished. Download or read book Ottoman and Persian Odysseys written by Henry McKenzie Johnston and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "'The Adventures of Hajji Baba of Ispahan,' the story of a likable Iranian rogue caught up in a series of extraordinary and farcical adventures, remains perhaps the most famous of English picaresque novels and, curiously, a favorite among Iranians. First published in 1823, it was an instant best-seller, and is still in print. Little, however, is known of the life of its author, James Morier. Here, for the first time, the reader can follow the fascinating story of James and his two brothers, Jack and David. Their Swiss-born father was a merchant in Smyrna; but during the Napoleonic Wars the brothers, all British citizens although there was only a tiny drop of British blood in their veins, forsook the world of trade to become involved in the exciting world of countering French activities and influence in the Ottoman Empire and Persia. This book is based on a mass of almost unknown family papers and, through the many letters the Moriers wrote to each other from far-flung corners of the globe, throws fresh light on the lives of people caught up in the early years of colonial expansion."--Bloomsbury Publishing.
Download or read book Writing Travel in Central Asian History written by Nile Green and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2014-01-02 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For centuries, travelers have made Central Asia known to the wider world through their writings. In this volume, scholars employ these little-known texts in a wide range of Asian and European languages to trace how Central Asia was gradually absorbed into global affairs. The representations of the region brought home to China and Japan, India and Persia, Russia and Great Britain, provide valuable evidence that helps map earlier periods of globalization and cultural interaction.
Download or read book Literary Translation in Modern Iran written by Esmaeil Haddadian-Moghaddam and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2014-12-15 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Literary Translation in Modern Iran: A sociological study is the first comprehensive study of literary translation in modern Iran, covering the period from the late 19th century up to the present day. By drawing on Pierre BourdieuN's sociology of culture, this work investigates the people behind the selection, translation, and production of novels from English into Persian. The choice of novels such as Morier's The Adventures of Hajji Baba of Ispahan, Austen's Pride and Prejudice, and Vargas Llosa's The War of the End of the World provides insights into who decides upon titles for translation, motivations of translators and publishers, and the context in which such decisions are made. The author suggests that literary translation in Iran is not a straightforward activity. As part of the field of cultural production, literary translation has remained a lively game not only to examine and observe, but also often a challenging one to play. By adopting hide-and-seek strategies and with attention to the dynamic of the field of publishing, Iranian translators and publishers have continued to play the game against all odds. The book is not only a contribution to the growing scholarship informed by sociological approaches to translation, but an essential reading for scholars and students of Translation Studies, Iranian Studies, and Middle Eastern Studies.
