Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Adventures of Hajji Baba of Ispahan The unchanging East reproduces to-day the manners and customs of long-past ages almost as faithfully and completely (to use a simile found in the beginning of this book) as the engraved copper-plate, worn by long use, continues to repeat its first impression. Parts of the picture have from much use become indistinct, some details have been obliterated, but the whole subject is there. Doubtless since Morier stime the wearing out of the plate has proceeded more rapidly, and the impression is more blurred and broken, but still this perpetuating of the storied past is the source of the peculiar interest which the study of oriental life has for the restless and progressive peoples of the West. To visit the East is still to step back into the vanished centuries, to see with our own eyes the actual mode of life of those bygone ages, and the very scene of those remote events and romantic incidents which have the charm of pious association and familiarity that flow from an early introduction to Holy Writ and Eastern fable. Thus such a book as the Ad ventures of Hajji Baba makes an appeal to memory and imagination that literature dealing with foreign countries other than Asiatic, or with newer peoples, cannot put forward. For while it is true that for the student of humanity no people or country is unworthy of observation, still for most of us Palestine and Persia possess an interest which Central Africa and South Sea Islands lack. When the author of Hajji Baba first began to write, public interest in Persia was more acute than it had ever been before, or probably has been since. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Adventures of Hajji Baba, of Ispahan, in England To the Gentle Reader, Should you perchance have perused a certain history, called The Adventures of Hajji Baba of Ispahan, and had the patience to reach the last page, you will there have seen a sort of declaration, that if the translator were to meet with encouragement, he would inform you how his hero (if such he may be called) accompanied a great ambassador from Persia to England, and of their subsequent adventures. In all humility I beg to inform you that I am that translator; but in making the said declaration, I found that I had placed myself in a dilemma; for what is encouragement? let me ask. Is it the applause of friends? No; they are partial. The notice of the daily press? Puffing is no encouragement. The criticism of reviewers? They lose sight of the work, and write their own essays. Not even the several editions through which a book may pass can be appealed to as a decided test; for now-a-days, in England, reading societies are as numerous as reading men in other countries, and they alone exhaust a first edition, whether the book is read or not; whilst the second generally remains to lumber the booksellers' shelves; therefore, unless the copies sold be counted, not by hundreds, but by thousands, an author can scarcely be said to have acquired decided success. Such being the case, to use Hajji's language, I folded the arms of idleness over the breast of resignation; and since my book had scarcely exhausted a second edition, I was determined to bid adieu to ambition, and to seat myself amongst the obscure class of second or third-rate scribblers. This book was released on 2018-01-31 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Adventures of Hajji Baba, of Ispahan, Vol. 1 of 2 Although the principal function of a work of fiction is to entertain, to describe H ajji Baba merely as an entertaining story would be to give a most inadequate idea of its value. The amusement which it affords to the ordinary novel-reader, who seeks from its perusal nothing beyond amusement, is, moreover, amply attested by the favourable reception accorded to the book on its first appearance in 1824, and by the several editions (in 1828, 1835, 1856, 1863, etc.) which have since been called for. It has long been ranked amongst standard English novels, nor is it likely to be displaced so long as the English nation is able to appreciate good literature. Every cultivated Englishman who has not read Hajji Baba (if, indeed, the Englishman who has read it not can, in the full meaning of the term, be described as cultivated) should at once proceed to remedy this defect in his education. If he be a normally constituted person, with a reasonably well-developed sense of humour, he will hardly lay the book aside until he has finished. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Adventures of Hajji Baba of Ispahan, Vol. 2 of 3 Are hushed up among the Curds, I have never dared to question any body concern ing them, and cannot, therefore, ascertain whether the reports about my birth be true or not. It is very certain that I never looked up to any one as my mother; but was brought up at hazard among our wo men, and that my earliest friend was a foal, that lived as an inmate with us. It was born in the very tent which my father's wives occupied; and its dam, of the purest Arabian blood, was treated more like one of the family than a quadruped: in fact, it received much more attention than any of the Wives; it enjoyed the warmest place in the tent, was beautifully clothed, and in all our journeys was the first object of our cares. When the mare died, an universal lamentation ensued throughout the en campment. The foal lived to be my father's. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a result of an effort made by us towards making a contribution to the preservation and repair of original classic literature. In an attempt to preserve, improve and recreate the original content, we have worked towards: 1. Type-setting & Reformatting: The complete work has been re-designed via professional layout, formatting and type-setting tools to re-create the same edition with rich typography, graphics, high quality images, and table elements, giving our readers the feel of holding a 'fresh and newly' reprinted and/or revised edition, as opposed to other scanned & printed (Optical Character Recognition - OCR) reproductions. 2. Correction of imperfections: As the work was re-created from the scratch, therefore, it was vetted to rectify certain conventional norms with regard to typographical mistakes, hyphenations, punctuations, blurred images, missing content/pages, and/or other related subject matters, upon our consideration. Every attempt was made to rectify the imperfections related to omitted constructs in the original edition via other references. However, a few of such imperfections which could not be rectified due to intentional\unintentional omission of content in the original edition, were inherited and preserved from the original work to maintain the authenticity and construct, relevant to the work. We believe that this work holds historical, cultural and/or intellectual importance in the literary works community, therefore despite the oddities, we accounted the work for print as a part of our continuing effort towards preservation of literary work and our contribution towards the development of the society as a whole, driven by our beliefs. We are grateful to our readers for putting their faith in us and accepting our imperfections with regard to preservation of the historical content. HAPPY READING!
