Book Ernest the Elephant Goes to the Seaside

Download or read book Ernest the Elephant Goes to the Seaside written by Joyce Beasley and published by . This book was released on 2013-10-28 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the second of a series of booklets I have written about Ernest the Elephant. It is aimed at children from the ages of 5 to 7 years, Key Stage 1. Each booklet contains a story about Ernest (who is supposed never to forget, but who always does!) accompanied by simple comprehension questions. The aim is to provide an interesting story for children to read on their own, or with adult support, and also to introduce the concept of answering questions with a full sentence. Many of my older students are unable to do comprehension. This is because their reading skills and their deduction skills are not very good. It is my opinion that the younger the child, the easier it is to master these skills. I have, therefore, produced a series of stories and activities based around the character of Ernest. I do not in any way wish to 'hot-house' children, but I do think it is important to learn basic skills as soon as possible, because failure to do so leads to lots of problems as the child progresses through school.Everything I have written is based on my own teaching and tutoring experiences. I know that children find certain areas of literacy extremely difficult, and the same problems crop up time and time again. Hopefully, by using these booklets, some of these problems can be avoided.

Book excerpt: South! tells one of the most thrilling tales of exploration and survival against the odds which has ever been written. It details the experiences of the Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition which set off in 1914 to make an attempt to cross the Antarctic continent. Under the direction of Sir Ernest Shackleton, the expedition comprised two components: one party sailing on the Endurance into the Weddell Sea, which was to attempt the actual crossing; and another party on board the Aurora, under the direction of Aeneas Mackintosh, sailing into the Ross Sea on the other side of the continent and tasked with establishing depots of stores as far south as possible for the use of the party attempting the crossing. Shackleton gives a highly readable account of the fate of both parties of the Expedition. Both fell victim to the severe environmental conditions of the region, and it was never possible to attempt the crossing. The Endurance was trapped in pack-ice in the Weddell Sea and the ship was eventually crushed by the pressure of the ice, leaving Shackleton’s men stranded on ice floes, far from solid land. Shackleton’s account of their extraordinary struggles to survive is as gripping as any novel. This book is part of the Standard Ebooks project, which produces free public domain ebooks.

Download or read book Garden of Eden written by Ernest Hemingway and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2014-05-22 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A sensational bestseller when it appeared in 1986, The Garden of Eden is the last uncompleted novel of Ernest Hemingway, which he worked on intermittently from 1946 until his death in 1961. Set on the Côte d'Azur in the 1920s, it is the story of a young American writer, David Bourne, his glamorous wife, Catherine, and the dangerous, erotic game they play when they fall in love with the same woman. “A lean, sensuous narrative...taut, chic, and strangely contemporary,” The Garden of Eden represents vintage Hemingway, the master “doing what nobody did better” (R.Z. Sheppard, Time).
