Book The Adventure of the Blanched Soldier Annotated

Download or read book The Adventure of the Blanched Soldier Annotated written by Arthur Conan Doyle and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2016-01-20 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ideas of my friend Watson, though limited, are exceedingly pertinacious. For a long time he has worried me to write an experience of my own. Perhaps I have rather invited this persecution, since I have often had occasion to point out to him how superficial are his own accounts and to accuse him of pandering to popular taste instead of confining himself rigidly to facts and figures. "Try it yourself, Holmes!" he has retorted, and I am compelled to admit that, having taken my pen in my hand, I do begin to realize that the matter must be presented in such a way as may interest the reader.

He has contacted Emsworth’s father, Colonel Ensworth, but the later tells him his son has gone off at sea. Not satisfied by this response Dodd went off to visit the colonel and his wife, who he found to be less than welcoming. Questioning the butler only made Dodd even less at ease and he hopes that Holmes will be able to track Emsworth down. "The Adventure of the Blanched Soldier" (1926) is part of "The Case-Book of Sherlock Holmes". Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (1859-1930) was born in Scotland and studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh. After his studies, he worked as a ship’s surgeon on various boats. During the Second Boer War, he was an army doctor in South Africa. When he came back to the United Kingdom, he opened his own practice and started writing crime books. He is best known for his thrilling stories about the adventures of Sherlock Holmes. He published four novels and more than 50 short-stories starring the detective and Dr Watson, and they play an important role in the history of crime fiction. Other than the Sherlock Holmes series, Doyle wrote around thirty more books, in genres such as science-fiction, fantasy, historical novels, but also poetry, plays, and non-fiction.

Book excerpt: The Case Book of Sherlock Holmes contains twelve stories written about the legendary consulting detective by his creator Arthur Conan Doyle. Like all the other Sherlock Holmes adventures, these stories were originally published in the Strand Magazine, in this case between October 1921 and April 1927. What sets the stories collected in the Case Book of Sherlock Holmes from all other anthologies is that that they represent the winding down of a literary sensation. These are the last original mysteries of Holmes to be published in the Strand and this is the last collection of original stories penned by Doyle.Although new editions sometimes reorder the stories, the order in which they appeared when The Case Book of Sherlock Holmes was originally published (in chronological ordering according to their serial publication date) is as follows: "The Adventure of the Mazarin Stone" (1921)"The Problem of Thor Bridge" (1922)"The Adventure of the Creeping Man" (1923)"The Adventure of the Sussex Vampire" (1924)"The Adventure of the Three Garridebs" (1924)"The Adventure of the Illustrious Client" (1924)"The Adventure of the Three Gables" (1926)"The Adventure of the Blanched Soldier" (1926)"The Adventure of the Lion's Mane" (1926)"The Adventure of the Retired Colourman" (1926)"The Adventure of the Veiled Lodger" (1927)"The Adventure of Shoscombe Old Place" (1927)Some of the selections that that appear in The Case Book of Sherlock Holmes are the only remaining original Holmes stories written by Doyle that are not in the public domain. Book Sherlock Holmes through the Microscope

Download or read book Sherlock Holmes through the Microscope written by Carl Heifetz and published by Andrews UK Limited. This book was released on 2018-07-31 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The life and career of Mr. Sherlock Holmes haves inspired the interest of many of the brightest intellects in the world. They have expended great efforts to penetrate beyond the glimpses afforded us in the 60 published adventures - to detect the real underlying character of "the best and the wisest man" Dr. Watson has ever known ("The Final Problem" by A. C. Doyle). To the hundreds of past and present day Sherlockians, Holmesians, Doyeleans, we owe a great deal of gratitude for helping to shred the veil which has been created to obfuscate the real character of our remarkable hero: from the sainted Christopher Morley and Vincent Starrett; to the renowned commentators Ronald A. Knox, William S. Baring-Gould, Edgar W. Smith, Sydney C. Roberts, Michael Harrison, Michael Hardwick, and many others too numerous to mention. Commentators have included bookmen, journalists and essayists, physicians, psychiatrists and pathologists, chemists, monsignors and vicars, barristers and solicitors, and automobile executives. All have brought their intelligence, unique perspectives, and, most of all, a very desperate need for knowledge to this quest, their labor of love. With great humility but stout heart, I feel highly motivated, even obligated, to attempt to add my voice to this ongoing effort. As a microbiologist, I hope to bring a different perspective to these studies. I am used to dealing with very minute objects that produce consequences much greater than their size would indicate. Is not this obsession with minutiae the perfect training and background for one who feels the need to participate in Sherlockian studies? I do hope that this makes me somewhat qualified to join in this important area of scholarly research.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nominated, 2024 Edgar Allan Poe Award in the category of best critical/biographical, Mystery Writers of America Shortlisted, 2024 Agatha Awards - Best Mystery Nonfiction, Malice Domestic Posthumous Winner - 2023 IFCA Book Prize, International Crime Fiction Association Narrative innovation is typically seen as the domain of the avant-garde. However, techniques such as nonlinear timelines, multiple points of view, and unreliable narration have long been part of American popular culture. How did forms and styles once regarded as “difficult” become familiar to audiences? In Perplexing Plots, David Bordwell reveals how crime fiction, plays, and films made unconventional narrative mainstream. He shows that since the nineteenth century, detective stories and suspense thrillers have allowed ambitious storytellers to experiment with narrative. Tales of crime and mystery became a training ground where audiences learned to appreciate artifice. These genres demand a sophisticated awareness of storytelling conventions: they play games with narrative form and toy with audience expectations. Bordwell examines how writers and directors have pushed, pulled, and collaborated with their audiences to change popular storytelling. He explores the plot engineering of figures such as Raymond Chandler, Agatha Christie, Dashiell Hammett, Patricia Highsmith, Alfred Hitchcock, Dorothy Sayers, and Quentin Tarantino, and traces how mainstream storytellers and modernist experimenters influenced one another’s work. A sweeping, kaleidoscopic account written in a lively, conversational style, Perplexing Plots offers an ambitious new understanding of how movies, literature, theater, and popular culture have evolved over the past century.

  • Pages : 495 pages

Download or read book The Literary Spy written by Charles E. Lathrop and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2008-10-01 with total page 495 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: div The Literary Spy provides a unique view of the intelligence world through the words of its own major figures (and those fascinated with them) from ancient times to the present. CIA speechwriter and analyst Charles E. Lathrop has compiled and annotated more than 3,000 quotations from such disparate sources as the Bible, spy novels and movies, Shakespeare’s plays, declassified CIA documents, memoirs, TV talk shows, and speeches from U.S. and foreign leaders and officials. Arranged in thematic categories with opening commentary for each section, the quotations speak for themselves. Together they serve both to illuminate a world famous for its secrets and deceptions and to show the extent to which intelligence has manifested itself in literature and in life. Engaging, informative, and often irreverent, The Literary Spy is an exceedingly satisfying book—one that meets the needs of the serious researcher just as ably as those of the armchair spy in pursuit of an evening’s entertainment. /DIV

Book The Detective s Companion in Crime Fiction

Download or read book The Detective s Companion in Crime Fiction written by Lucy Andrew and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-07-24 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book aims to establish the position of the sidekick character in the crime and detective fiction literary genres. It re-evaluates the traditional view that the sidekick character in these genres is often overlooked as having a small, generic or singular role—either to act as the foil to the detective in order to accentuate their own abilities at solving crimes, or else to simply tell the story to the reader. Instead, essays in the collection explore the representations and functions of the detective’s sidekick across a range of forms and subgenres of crime fiction. By incorporating forms such as children’s detective fiction, comics and graphic novels and film and television alongside the more traditional fare of novels and short stories, this book aims to break down the boundaries that sometimes exist between these forms, using the sidekick as a defining thread to link them together into a wider conceptual argument that covers a broad range of crime narratives.
