Book Movies and the Moral Adventure of Life

Download or read book Movies and the Moral Adventure of Life written by Alan A. Stone and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2007-08-17 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Essays on small art films and big-budget blockbusters, including Antonia's Line, American Beauty, Schindler's List, and The Passion of the Christ, that view films as life lessons, enlarging our sense of human possibilities. For Alan Stone, a one-time Freudian analyst and former president of the American Psychiatric Society, movies are the great modern, democratic medium for exploring our individual and collective lives. They provide occasions for reflecting on what he calls “the moral adventure of life”: the choices people make—beyond the limits of their character and circumstances—in response to life's challenges. The quality of these choices is, for him, the measure of a life well lived. In this collection of his film essays, Stone reads films as life texts. He is engaged more by their ideas than their visual presentation, more by their power to move us than by their commercial success. Stone writes about both art films and big-budget Hollywood blockbusters. And he commands an extraordinary range of historical, literary, cultural, and scientific reference that reflects his impressive personal history: professor of law and medicine, football player at Harvard in the late 1940s, director of medical training at McLean Hospital, and advisor to Attorney General Janet Reno on behavioral science. In the end, Stone's enthusiasms run particularly to films that embrace the sheer complexity of life, and in doing so enlarge our sense of human possibilities: in Antonia's Line, he sees an emotionally vivid picture of a world beyond patriarchy; in Thirteen Conversations about One Thing, the power of sheer contingency in human life; and in American Beauty, how beauty in ordinary experience draws us outside ourselves, and how beauty and justice are distinct goods, with no intrinsic connection. Other films discussed in these essays (written between 1993 and 2006 for Boston Review) include Un Coeur en Hiver, Schindler's List, Pulp Fiction, Thirteen Days, the 1997 version of Lolita, The Battle of Algiers, The Passion of the Christ, Persuasion, and Water.

Book excerpt: Awaken the Bear is a small book with a big message: The modern world has lulled us into a collective hibernation. To wake up, we need to stop the noise, activate our senses, and re-wild our daily patterns. We all know deep down that we are built for more than sameness and screens. But how do we get there? How do we live a life that is meaningful and adventurous? In Awaken the Bear, Meier introduces readers to another path--one that is primal, untamed, and wild. Blending groundbreaking research with compelling personal stories, he challenges us to rethink the way we view ourselves and the natural world around us. Laying out a blueprint for well-being informed equally by cutting-edge research and timeless wisdom, Meier urges us to tap into our wild inheritance, suggesting that as our modern lives shift increasingly indoors, recognizing the benefits of nature has become more urgent than ever. The goal for all of us should be to approach life with excitement and zest, to feel alive and activated, and to live a life that is rewarding and authentic. But none of this happens on its own. There are levers that we need to pull, and we need to ask the right questions: Why and where are we meant to roam? What animates us? What challenges us? What sustains us? Awaken the Bear is an invitation to consider these questions and to open the door to a wilder and more meaningful life.

They are people age 40 and older who have pioneered the art of finishing well in these modern times, and who can teach us to do the same, starting today. Buford sought out 60 of these trailblazers--including Peter Drucker, Roger Staubach, Jim Collins, Ken Blanchard, and Dallas Willard--and has recorded their lively conversations in these pages so that they can serve as "mentors in print" for all of us. "Twenty years from now," Buford writes, "the rules for this second adulthood as a productive season of life may be better known. But for now, we're out across the frontier breaking new ground." Book The Adventure of I

Download or read book The Adventure of I written by Tania Kotsos and published by . This book was released on 2013-05-23 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Adventure of I is one of the most complete, logical and practical books written about the power of the human mind, Universal Consciousness, the Laws and Principles of the Universe, and your ability to direct your mind and create the life you desire with the power of your will. This book will take you on a journey to the centre of your reality where you will discover the mighty I within, and in so doing, you will come to understand just what is meant by the greatest maxim of all time, 'Know Thyself'. It is unlike other books on the subject in that it is founded on what is called Top-Down-Living, which is to live life from the higher vantage point of your Real Self. Only by raising your degree of consciousness above the Physical Plane of your physical experience and the Mental Plane of your thoughts, desires and emotions, can you have directive power over them. Trying to change your physical experience at the degree of consciousness of the physical you is akin to manipulating an already printed photograph and expecting the changes to be reflected when you print it out again from the original negative. The Adventure of I teaches you how to change the 'original' so as to create lasting change in your life. You will gain an unparalleled understanding of the underlying mental nature of the Universe and how your mind creates your reality through It. You will discover the masculine and feminine principles of your mind and how they work together for the same purpose that is creation. You will learn precisely why your mind must, by definition, be one and the same with the One Universal Mind of The Absolute in Its entirety, for which nothing is impossible. You will learn about the seven Universal Laws and other Principles that govern everything and everyone in the Universe, and how to use the Higher Laws to master the Lower Laws and transcend the influence of polarity and rhythm in your life. You will learn practical techniques for consciously creating your experience of reality, one desire at a time, under the direction of your will and the knowing of your intuition. You will discover long-lost secrets about the nature of the Universe and your mind's central place within Its Omnipotence, and much more. Ultimately, The Adventure of I will empower you to utter the most profound statement, 'I AM I', with full authority, and in so doing, you will become the master of your destiny.

Book No Impact Man

Download or read book No Impact Man written by Colin Beavan and published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux. This book was released on 2009-09-01 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A guilty liberal finally snaps, swears off plastic, goes organic, becomes a bicycle nut, turns off his power, and generally becomes a tree-hugging lunatic who tries to save the polar bears and the rest of the planet from environmental catastrophe while dragging his baby daughter and Prada-wearing, Four Seasons–loving wife along for the ride. And that's just the beginning. Bill McKibben meets Bill Bryson in this seriously engaging look at one man's decision to put his money where his mouth is and go off the grid for one year—while still living in New York City—to see if it's possible to make no net impact on the environment. In other words, no trash, no toxins in the water, no elevators, no subway, no products in packaging, no air-conditioning, no television . . . What would it be like to try to live a no-impact lifestyle? Is it possible? Could it catch on? Is living this way more satisfying or less satisfying? Harder or easier? Is it worthwhile or senseless? Are we all doomed or can our culture reduce the barriers to sustainable living so it becomes as easy as falling off a log? These are the questions at the heart of this whole mad endeavor, via which Colin Beavan hopes to explain to the rest of us how we can realistically live a more "eco-effective" and by turns more content life in an age of inconvenient truths.

Book Running Toward Mystery

Download or read book Running Toward Mystery written by Tenzin Priyadarshi and published by Random House. This book was released on 2020-04-07 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A revered Buddhist monk tells the bracing and beautiful story of a singular life compelled to contemplation, sharing lessons about the power of mentorship and an open mind “A necessary and captivating narrative of spiritual courage and truth seeking far beyond the veil of our contemporary delusions.”—Sting Born in India to a prominent Hindu Brahmin family, the Venerable Tenzin Priyadarshi was only six years old when he began having visions of a mysterious mountain peak, and of men with shaved heads wearing robes the color of sunset. “It was as vivid as if I were watching a scene from life,” he writes. And so at the age of ten, he ran away from boarding school to find this place—taking a train to the end of the line and then riding a bus to wherever it went. Strangely enough, he ended up at a Buddhist monastery that was the place in his dreams. His frantic parents and relatives set out to find him and, after two weeks, located him and brought him home. But he continued to have visions and feel a strong pull to a spiritual life in a tradition that he had never heard of as a child. Today, he is a revered monk and teacher as well as President and CEO of The Dalai Lama Center for Ethics and Transformative Values at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he works to build bridges among communities and religions. Running Toward Mystery is the Venerable Tenzin Priyadarshi’s profound account of his lifelong journey as a seeker. At its heart is a story of striving for enlightenment, the vital importance of mentors in that search, and of the many remarkable teachers he met along the way, among them the Dalai Lama, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, and Mother Teresa. “Teachers come and go on their own schedule,” Priyadarshi writes. “I clearly wasn’t in charge of the timetable and it wasn’t my place to specify how a teacher should teach.” And arrive they did, at the right time, in the right way, to impart the lessons that shaped a life of seeking, devotion, and deep human connection across all barriers. Running Toward Mystery is the bracing and beautiful story of a singular life compelled to contemplation, and a riveting narrative of just how exciting that journey can be.
