Over the past 50 years, animal models have been developed to study these dynamic interactions between stressful stimuli and genetically susceptible individuals during prenatal and postnatal development and into adulthood. Stress and Mental Disorders: Insights from Animal Models begins with a discussion of the history of psychiatric diagnosis and the recent goal of moving toward precision psychiatry, followed by a review of clinical research on connections between stressful stimuli and the development of psychiatric disorders. Chapters are also included on neuroendocrine, immune, and brain systems involved in responses to stress. Additional chapters focus on the development of animal models in psychiatry and the susceptibility of the developing organism to stressful stimuli. Standardized nomenclature has developed significantly during the 1O-year period since the first volume and is being utilized on an international basis. This has resulted in significant improvement in communication of pathologic data to regulatory agencies and in scientific publications worldwide. This monograph series and others sponsored by ILSI have produced a significant effect on improved communications and the international acceptance of standardized nomenclature. In this second edition, new formats have been used where more appropriate for the subjects to be covered. In many cases, the format used in the first edition still is useful. Specimens from adult prisoners have also indicated an unusually high incidence of triple-X females. Studies of a population of confined juvenile offenders, on the other hand, have indicated an unusually high incidence of one-X females. No unusual indications were observed in a population of "normal" volunteer females. The data and their implications are discussed in context with previous observations.
