Book excerpt: This paper explores the evolution of environmental practices in the Olympic Movement and how they have become institutionalized within the field by using qualitative methodology consisting of content analysis of International Olympic Committee and Organizing Committees for the Olympic Games documents as well as other archival sources. The environmental phases of the Olympic Movement may be broken into the following non-exclusive themes: environment, sustainability, and zero impact. Environmental management in the Olympic Games bows to normative, coercive, and mimetic pressures from multiple groups and has caused isomorphism to occur which institutionalized environmental plans for bids in the Olympic Games. These environmental themes contribute to the event and sport event management literatures by helping future event organizers understand phases of environmental management and where there is room for growth in addressing environmental concerns at the Games.

Book excerpt: Concern for protection of the natural environment is a growing issue within sport and mega-events. The Olympic Movement adopted green practices starting in the mid 1980s in order to reduce the environmental impact of the event. Little is known about the institutional history of the environmental movement within the Movement and which stakeholders are involved in supporting these environmental initiatives. This thesis uses content analysis in an attempt to understand the evolution of environmental practices within the Movement, identify the major stakeholders involved in organizing environmental practices, and define the roles of these major stakeholders. Findings suggest the Olympic Movement has utilized environmental, sustainability, and zero impact themes in their policies and practices. Major environmental stakeholders are organizers, regulators, non-governmental organizations, and sponsors. These environmental themes and stakeholder identities contribute to the sport management literature and will help future Olympic Games organizers approach understand environmental challenges they might face.

This paper analyzes the case of using temperature sensors for intelligent event management such as venue detection in the sustainable development plan of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics; the idea and practice of thrifty hosting of 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics and 2022 Hangzhou Asian Games holds that in most cases, the ECC of the host city of the Olympic Games is under great pressure, so it is necessary to pay attention to the ECC of the host city. It is suggested that the sustainable development of the Olympic Games needs to evaluate the ECC of the host city in the whole cycle, establish the principle of ecological priority to avoid the overload mode of ecological burden, strive to achieve carbon neutrality in the competition, and practice the idea of scientific frugality in running the competition.
