His only source of frustration is his record of military successes on land are not matched at sea because of steadfast opposition from the British Royal Navy. Dissatisfied with the lack of results achieved by the core leadership in his Navy, Napoleon launches his own bold, secret plan to crush the stubborn British once and for all. French Admiral Pierre-Charles Villeneuve soon receives a set of mysterious orders to leave the port of Toulon with his fleet to join with a Spanish squadron and make his way to the Caribbean. He is frustrated the orders give no clear indication of what he is expected to do and he must await future orders from Napoleon. Opposing Villeneuve is British Admiral Lord Horatio Nelson and the Royal Navy’s Mediterranean fleet, who follow in hot pursuit. The Caribbean soon becomes the centre of a desperate hunt to bring the French to battle with Nelson and his fleet. To help Nelson’s pursuit Captain Evan Ross and Commander James Wilton must sort through a tangled web of rumours spread by master French spy Hubert Montdenoix. Book excerpt: How history's only five-star admirals triumphed in World War II and made the United States the world's dominant sea power. Only four men in American history have been promoted to the five-star rank of Admiral of the Fleet: William Leahy, Ernest King, Chester Nimitz, and William Halsey. These four men were the best and the brightest the navy produced, and together they led the U.S. navy to victory in World War II, establishing the United States as the world's greatest fleet. In The Admirals, award-winning historian Walter R. Borneman tells their story in full detail for the first time. Drawing upon journals, ship logs, and other primary sources, he brings an incredible historical moment to life, showing us how the four admirals revolutionized naval warfare forever with submarines and aircraft carriers, and how these men -- who were both friends and rivals -- worked together to ensure that the Axis fleets lay destroyed on the ocean floor at the end of World War II.

Book excerpt: Since being illegally press-ganged into joining King George's Navy, John Pearce has overcome numerous adversaries, which have secured him a position of command on board HMS Faron. Having successfully overcome the French at the Siege of Toulon, Pearce and his comrades, the Pelicans, now face the on-going, bloody battle to defend the port. Meanwhile, Lieutenant Pearce's continuing conflict with Captain Ralph Barclay, the man responsible for press-ganging Pearce and his companions into the Navy, intensifies as Barclay faces a court martial for his actions. But with Barclay's superiors, Admiral Lord Hood and Admiral Hotham, in dispute over how to deal with Barclay's misgivings and with his wife, Emily, struggling to cope with his barbarous nature, Barclay's future looks uncertain. Pearce's hope for retribution may occur sooner than he anticipated, but would it be to his advantage? As Pearce confronts assaults from both the French and his superiors, it becomes clear that Pearce and his comrades are part of a large and potentially fatal plan, where war becomes a calculated game to be won.

Book excerpt: “A most readable and interesting work . . . deserves a place on the shelves of anyone interested in war at sea during the Great French Wars.” —Nautical Research Journal On the four sides of the Arc de Triomphe in Paris, serried tablets display the names of 660 honored commanders of the Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars. Most are those of generals and marshals of the French Army—but 26 of them are those of admirals, commanders of the fleets of Republican and Napoleonic France. In Napoleon’s Admirals, Richard Humble presents not only their individual stories, but an entirely new appraisal of the Anglo-French naval war of 1793-1814: the longest sea war in modern history. Many myths are exploded in this book—from the long-held idea that aristocratic officers of the French Navy emigrated en masse when the Revolution came, leaving the Navy leaderless and doomed to repeated defeats at sea, to the popular British belief that the naval war ended with Nelson’s victory at Trafalgar. Of the 26 “Admirals of the Arc,” 23 had learned their trade in the French royal and merchant navies of the ancien régime. Republican France could call on a wide range of seasoned combat veterans from the American Revolutionary War (1778-83), whose stories are a revelation in themselves. In his account of the men who imposed such a strain in on the world’s greatest Navy for 21 years, Richard Humble has provided a remarkable addition to the well-worn pages of conventional naval history. “Not only authoritative; it makes a very enjoyable and instructive read.” —The Napoleon Series “Fills a major gap in this largely neglected period in French naval history.” —International Journal of Maritime History

Book excerpt: The Admirals: Canada’s Senior Naval Leadership in the Twentieth Century fills an important void in the history of Canada’s navy. Those who carry the burden of high command have a critical niche in not only guiding the day-to-day concerns of running an armed service but in ensuring that it is ready to face the challenges of the future. Canada’s leading naval historians present analytical articles on the officers who led the navy from its foundation in 1910 to the unification in 1968. Six former Maritime Commanders provide personal reflections on command. The result is a valuable biographical compendium for anyone interested in the history of the Canadian Navy, the Canadian Forces, or military and naval leadership in general.
