Book Power Administration and Finance in Mughal India

Download or read book Power Administration and Finance in Mughal India written by John F. Richards and published by Routledge. This book was released on 1993 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the mid-16th to the early 18th centuries the Mughal empire was the dominant power in the Indian subcontinent. Contrary to what is sometimes suggested, John Richards argues that this centralised state was dynamic and skillfully run. The studies here consider its links with the wider early modern world, and focus on three related aspects of its history. The first concerns the nature of imperial authority, in terms both of the dynastic ideology created by Akbar and his successors, and the extent to which this authority could be enforced in the countryside. The second aspect is that of fiscal and monetary policy and administration: how did the Mughals collect, track and expend their vast revenues, and what effects did this have? Finally, the author asks why the system could not cope with the changes it had helped engender, and what were the weaknesses and pressures that led to the breakup of the empire in the first decades of the 18th century.

Book Land Revenue Administration Under The Mughals 1700 1750 Second Edition

Download or read book Land Revenue Administration Under The Mughals 1700 1750 Second Edition written by Noman Ahmad Siddiqi and published by . This book was released on 1989-01-01 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Description: The Mughal Empire of the great Mughals always evoked stock images of splendour, and scores of authors wrote volumes on it. But only a dedicated few like Dr. Noman Ahmad Siddiqi took enormous pains to analyse and interpret the infrastructure of the Mughal Empire-the contemporary land administration and agrarian institutions. In this book, Dr. Siddiqi probes into the conflicting, but not mutually exclusive, rights and interests involved in the landholdings under the Mughals. With Clarity and understanding, he analyses the administrative practices of the Mughals. Referring to a mass of patiently collated data, Dr. Siddiqi shows how the Mughal administration sought to lessen or resolve the contradictions inherent in the land-revenue system. The stability of the Mughal government, the oriental extravaganza of power and the magnificence of the successive emperors, all, Dr. Siddiqi holds, rested on the success of agrarian administration-the base of the many-splendoured Mughals. This well-documented study delineates the decline of the Mughal opulence that came in the wake of a breakdown in the land administration. The overwhelming increase in the number of jagirdars, who claimed shares in the surplus produce, accelerated the pace of disintegration. Dr. Siddiqi's treatment of the working of the institutions of the zamindari, revenue-assignments and revenue-free-grants is characterised by the unyielding objectivity of a trained historian. His exposition of the social and economic role of the zamindars and madad-maash holders is a valuable contribution to our understanding of the land-relationship in the Mughal Empire.

Book Shah Jahan

Download or read book Shah Jahan written by Fergus Nicoll and published by Penguin Books India. This book was released on 2009 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Khurram Shah Jahan, a title meaning King of the World , ruled the Mughal Empire from 1628 to 1659. His reign marked the cultural zenith of the Mughal dynasty: a period of multiculturalism, poetry, fine art and stupendous architecture. His legacy in stone embraces not only the Taj Mahal the tomb of his beloved second wife, Anjumand Mumtaz Mahal but fortresses, mosques, gardens, carvanserais and schools. But Shah Jahan was also a ruthless political operator, who only achieved power by ordering the murder of two brothers and at least six other relatives, one of them the legitimately crowned Emperor Dawar Baksh. This is the story of an enlightened despot, a king who dispensed largesse to favoured courtiers but ignored plague in the countryside. Fergus Nicholl has reconstructed this intriguing tale from contemporary biographies, edicts and correspondence. He has also traveled widely through India and Pakistan to follow in Shah Jahan's footsteps and put together an original portrait that challenges many established legends to bring the man and the emperor to life.
